FCS Shaper Awards 'The Legend' Bob McTavish

Earlier this year FCS launched the Shaper Awards. A platform to honour and celebrate shapers for their significant contribution to the sport of surfing. We created two categories; the Icon Award (20yrs shaping) and the Legend Award (40yrs shaping).
Our plan was to produce in-depth interviews on each shaper, and also have them shape a board for FCS team rider Mick Fanning to ride. We’d document the board building process and bring you footage of Mick riding each board. It was all going to plan until Mick blew his knee out. And while we’re confident you’ll enjoy watching the shaper interviews, we’ve put a ‘To Be Continued’ on Mick surfing the new sleds.
With FCS team rider Mick Fanning on board, we asked Bob to shape a board that best represents his shaping vision and philosophy in a single piece of foam. Follow the process as Bob shapes Mick one of his most significant classic 70s models, the McTavish Bluebird, and along the way gain insight into one of our industry’s most revered personalities.
Bob’s influence on surfboard design and performance dating back to the 1960s is undeniable. Here’s a man who spearheaded the shortboard revolution and found new ways to ride waves. The fact that over 40 years later, he’s still in the bay and surfing daily is a testament to his love of the craft.

you a legend bob great stories be awesome to sit around a camp fire and just listen... when i turned 21 my sisters and brother brought me my first Mctavish board and 12 years later i still loving it. just surfed the board for the first time in about 8months over the weekend and got reminded how awesome the board is thanks BOB

I’ve owned one of his boards. Them boards from late 70’s were the best and made to last. Today’s boards are way too soft and don’t even last a summer. My Bob Mc Tavish cost $185 and I traded it for a twin fin 2 years later. They were the days.

his dad took him to a surf repair shop and he thought : that's what I want to do ... my dad took me nowhere ... once I came back home from school , and said : dad , can I go to the beach with my friends ? ...
