"Surfin' U.S.A." is a song with lyrics by Brian Wilson set to the music of "Sweet Little Sixteen", written by Chuck Berry. Mike Love also contributed to the lyrics, but was not credited. The song was first recorded by Wilson's band the Beach Boys and released as a single on March 4, 1963, then appearing as the title track to their album Surfin' U.S.A. Also produced by Wilson, the single peaked at number two in the chart of the Music Vendor trade paper (within a year renamed Record World) and at number three on the Billboard and Cash Box charts. It was backed with "Shut Down".
Billboard ranked "Surfin' U.S.A." the number 2 song of 1963. It has since become emblematic of the California Sound. The song "Surfin' U.S.A." is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.[2]
In this video I do both the guitar solo and the organ solo - two for one!

Mark, thanks for the lesson. I came here mainly to pick up that classic beach boys intro around 2:40 (for use in another song - see below), but found a number of other interesting parts (the double stops and of course that funky organ sound). The intro riff seems to be similar to some sections of an earlier recording of 'Hurricane' by Conrad And The Hurricane Strings. Check that out, it is on KZbin, also the Surfrajettes have covered it, on which this sort of riff is very prominent. Thanks again.

Thanks a bunch!! Especially thanks for that reference - I never heard that song, Hurricane. Great riff. I agree there's a similarity, though I think Hurricane has a bit of an edge to it that Surfin' USA doesn't have. Kind of like half way between Surfin' USA and Miserlou. I loved it!!

FUN FACT: This song has almost EXACTLY the same melody and chord progression as the Chuck Berry song “Sweet Little Sixteen.” The Beach Boys basically took the Chuck Berry song and set surf lyrics to it, and later releases of the song even solely list Chuck Berry as the author! Mike Love also claimed that he wrote the lyrics, and in 1994, launched an unsuccessful lawsuit against Brian Wilson over the author credit.

I have a large problem getting that pinkie finger down , or even close. for the power chords. My hand is not built the right way, I guess! unlike chuck berry who has incredible reach !! best regards . Exercise for that problem ?
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel Жыл бұрын
Thanks JMack! As for pinky exercises, sure they're out there. Best is to start using it every day. One simple way is to stake out a particular position on the fingerboard, 4 frets wide, and assign a finger to each fret position. Then play something simple over that - a scale or a tune. If you have to stray toward the nut one fret use your pointer. If you have to stray toward the bridge use your pinky - always. For example, you could stake out 5th position (i.e., frets 5, 6, 7, 8). Pointer plays on 4 & 5, Middle on 6, ring on 7, pinky on 8 & 9. Your pinky won't stay weak for long.
