They (the good surf days) seem to be waning. This winter was not the caliber of years ago. Sand bar changes?
@toddhendricks17272 жыл бұрын
@@pnwsurfchannel9085 the whole ocean is changing. For example Southern California maybe a 15 years ago would get 12 or so “named” south swells a summer. NOAA names significant swells 1s, 2s, 3s and so forth and north swells 1n, 2n..Now we are lucky to get maybe 4 significant south swells a year. Same for north swells. The jet stream, ocean currents, storm development, everything is changing and the surf is getting worse. I’ve been surfing and studying weather for 40 years. Climate change is real.

I read on one of the blogs, Washington gets over 300 days a year of head high or bigger waves. The wind is the issue. If you live here.. you can catch the "lighter" wind days but hit and miss on a quick trip. It ( the waves ) doesn't matter until October .. then... yes, it starts to get good... oh... the current... learn about how to read a current chart. "Slack water" is your friend (;-} .. depending though on the wind direction, you can hit the groins or the bay.. I like the corner though.

From Vancouver Island and haven’t surfed Westport before but looking to go first weekend of June. How do the waves look around this time of year? Any good lefts?
@pnwsurfchannel90852 жыл бұрын
Waves have been dicey lately. This had been one of the worst surf seasons of memory. Usually fall and winter swells are regular and predictable with waves tapering in spring/summer (with occasional exceptions). This year, few good swells. June is generally not a "good" time but a pulse may come through. There's lefts and rights at all these places in Westport- beach breaks. If big waves are pushing into the harbor, find the Groins, left waves for sure. We generally focus on the corner (rights) bc it *used* to the be the good spot.

lol even as an experienced surfer, sometimes I can barely get passed the break zone at Westport! It's a rough paddle out. Strong current, not as easy to paddle out like in Socal. Use the jetty sure, but be on your paddle game to get outta that rip, or you could get in trouble fast! The white wash has lot of power though and will give beginners a good push!

PNW Surf Channel interesting. I moved from Olympia to San Diego in 87’ and never left as the Navy got me here. Still have friends in the PNW. Some of which moved there from SoCal and have had multiple sessions at West Port. They say it can get really fun on the right tide and swell. Your tides up there swing what 10-15’ from low to high. Down here a really high tide is 7’ and a really low is -1.5. My guess is the window at WP is narrow not because there isn’t waves but the tide impact.
