This was my first time surfing Chicama, and jeez, was it a fun time. The wave is super long, the water isn't (that) cold, the crowds are minimum, and I hope this video inspires you to come here one day too! Hope you enjoy the video, and please like and subscribe!! More videos coming soon...

Hi Dan, loving your videos, just to let you know the reason why homes are half finished in Peru buddy, it’s a tax thing, until a builder is fully completed, they don’t have to pay tax.

Stop being a groveler and get to surf when there's proper surf. I have seen you surfing in chile, madeira and now chicama....and you never get a proper swell! As much as you research the place you are going to , please try sometimes to get there with a forecasted ground swell so you can show what the wave is like. Eating burritos and tacos in peru....what about cheviche and causa,or tacu tacu and some chicha morada. Nah,I am done with you One last thing: what you went out surfing that first morning you got there is called the cape, and that is NOT the wave. It is like surf info for beginners,you ve been arond the world,should try to do a better job by now 😢 Out of here,adios

I have been there 3 times, I'm from Spain and my wife is Peruvian. Two first times I scored hard, swell with 8 feet, and the wave was barreling in some sections, Mostly in front of Hotel El Hombre. I got to the pier a few times, and the ride was 1:30 or nearly 2 minutes. Then back walking 15 minutes (second time I paid some soles to a motocarro or tuc tuc, and the return was only 3 or 4 minutes). I hated to walk so much, ended up with cramps in the legs. Current very strong in the same direction you go riding the wave. It was so stronga that within 2 minutes you week 50 meters away from were you jumped to the water, so it is better to catch a wave soon or you'll be displaced. The summary of rubbish everywhere , semi dessert and unfinished houses is 100% true. Very nice and kind people and also kind of dangerous if you get to the wrong neighborhood or get on with the wrong people.

Wow! It must be so sick when it's 6-8ft! Would love to surf it like that... Yeah, getting to the pier is crazy longgg. But yes good shout on getting the lifts back around the point, I was defiantly tired and sore after 2 or 3 run-around laps, hahaha!

Thank you for this wonderful report, Dan!!! Chicama is very hard to get to. I was a teen in Lima when I first saw an 8mm film from there in '69. It was already legendary. The crew took turns driving the car back up the beach. Banditos were an issue back then... Gray skies, lefts and unfinished cinder block buildings were/are to be expected in Peru. "Hollow" is very rare in Peru❤

The tax effect is only part of the reason. Also, the real estate market in some parts of Peru is not developed, so people in what we call "autoconstrucción", which means self construction. Since income is low, families usually don't have enough money to build their house in one stage, so they save enough to build one space, then they save some more and build another space. Many of these constructions do not have a roof yet because it is the most expensive part. Obviously, no architects involved.

Nice vid! And great backgrounding info. The building style you mentioned is very common in developing countries where local cash currency doesn’t always hold its value due to inflation pressure, and where storing your money in a bank is not a convenient or secure option (due to banks going bankrupt, lack of branches, undeclared cash earnings, legislative risks, government corruption etc). So “storing” your wealth in building materials is a safer way for it to hold value. When the building materials are stuck to the ground they are harder to steal and are a bit more weather protected. So you get these shell houses and a piece-meal architecture that gives you flexible building timeframes to add bits as soon as you have enough cash. A simple solution to a complex problem.

Surfed here a few times before the popularity hit ( Peruvian born and now living in OZ). Such a fun wave on the right board like a mid length or fish Unfortunately when there is a swell now the crowds of learners on boats are too much with a lot of disrespect. It would be great if the locals and tourists could agree on a better way of doing this service and not tear the wave apart with wake. To answer the question about the unfinished buildings, I believe its to do with tax. In Peru when you finish a construction you must pay tax to the government so therefore in rural areas no one completes buildings as to say its not finished yet.
@DanHarmon123
@DanHarmon123 Жыл бұрын
Hey mate! Thanks for the info about the houses and yes, I think that was the only downside surfing here. So many waves got to waste by having boat wake through it!! Maybe a marker buoy for how far out boats need to go hahah?

Was at Chicama a couple of weeks ago. The wave is beautiful and the desert backdrop is amazing. The thing about cash is true across Peru. At Puerto Malabrigo there are no cash points. About the unfinished buildings, it happens by 2 factors: 1) the main one is money, people usually don't spend full money to finish their houses. At least they don't worry about the small details, like painting what is not necessary. If you can 'live' there, that's enough and they won't invest more money in it. You can see the difference in what is considered 'liveable' in different countries. But that gives you perspective though, I bet when you were there, you saw people happy, with a smile on their faces, put you to think that even with that living conditions, people are able to be happy, makes you forget about the classic "first world problems". 2) About the rooftops, the average family builds their houses with the expectation that they will build more levels in the future, mainly to rent, sell, or leave space for their sons or daughters. That's why you will see unfinished rooftops. This is actually a kinda cultural linked to economical factors. For years families lived in deprived conditions and young people still don't earn enough money to live independently, so they live with their parents and even construct their houses on top of their parent's houses. In Peru there are 2 worlds, you won't see this in the most developed parts of the capital city and some other cities, but in the rest of the country, this is the rule, especially in small poor towns. Cheers from a Peruvian!

Thanks for the details, very helpful for planning a trip there. By the way, I think the incomplete building has to do with incoming funds. That is the reason: low imcomes. People build their homes in stages. It is called "autoconstrucción". Roofs are the most expensive part, so they have to save more to finish the home properly.

Hey Dan @DanHarmon123! I am from Peru and already subscribed to your channel. I have surfed many times Chicama throughout my life (45 years surfing!) and once there was a solid 8 ft swell hitting Chicama and I managed to pass from "The Cape" (further away point) to "The Point" (the one you can see from town) and finished at "El Hombre" section. Legs destroyed. In normal conditions, you cannot connect with a single wave from Cape to Point. One thing I noticed in your video is that it was quite sky was every day greyish... you had bad luck. Chicama normally has sunshine every day, the water turns greenish blue, and stronger side-offshore wind shapes the wave even better holding the lip from braking, which means more time to play with maneuvers.

you were lucky, because chicama can sometimes be frustrating, you can get there and see no waves for days or even weeks (quality waves) and when there is a really big swell with a good direction for chicama there is a lot of people in the line up, you have to be lucky to get a really good wave, but at the end its a great place, very chill and you can get a wave or a ride that you will never forget

The lack of finishing is because of the building taxes. A completed building (with a roof) is subject to building tax. People can't even afford nutrient-dense food or have running water, let alone afford to pay taxes.

I was in Peru not too long ago and a local told me that they don't have to pay property tax if the building is still "in construction" so a lot of the buildings are left as if another level is going to be built above. Not sure how true this is. I didn't make it to Chicama but I loved the surf around Lima.

Just a guess but perhaps they get taxed on a building when it is completed SO they give the impression there is work left to be done so they don't ever have to pay?

About houses, that is because we do not use roof, because it is a desert so we do not need that, the reason because to not paint it is because people are irresponsable and don't want to pay extra taxes or fees

If it was easy to find, then the place would be like Malibu, take a number. Ok, #354 Get Ready, that's your wave, go on paddle for it. Sorry? Not the wave you wanted? What? You might have put in some preferences in your reservation. But, no nothing here on my screen. Sorry. Oh, you missed that wave? Well, I can reschedule you for next Thursday afternoon, or if you want morning glass, Friday at 7:15 am sharp. Don't be late.

I don't know if it's true, but when I went to Peru a taxi driver told me that people didn't finish construction because there was some tax discount if their house was under construction. (Something like that. But I don't know if it's true)
