Kalbarri, Western Australia, Jakes Point is a wave that the locals hog, back in the seventies it had a good vibe, with no local surfers except for Craig Howe. He was the first surfer to live there, over the years surfers from all over Australia gradually took up residence, these imports mainly from Queensland started to act like they owned the place from about the mid 1980's. Now they have kids who surf [ there's a lot called Jake ] these guys are total wave hogs. Most of them have the place wired, combine that with a narrow take off zone that's difficult and dredging, it's hard to get a good wave. There was a time when the waves were shared, those days, sadly are gone.

Montanita is the twin surf town with Mancora in Peru. Mostly a major party scene. The waves are better in Mancora. Be careful in Guayaquil. Sketchy.

I went to Trujillo once and randomly got laid with a local girl. Then I went to Mancora and scored clean coke for $6/gram.

Fun story surfing Raglan New Zealand, .... It was a nice slightly over head mellow day, very fun waves and a friendly good vibe in the water. I was riding a longboard so didn't have any problem catching waves, no snaking or anything just enjoying the whole session when this guy paddles up to me and starts in with "Hey, stop being a wave hog!!" I was taken aback because I was just catching a few here and there, nothing too aggro. Then found out he wasn't a local, the guy was from New Jersey!!!! SMH, sheesh.

Dan, In my time surfers would do almost anything to avoid getting a real job and keep surfin', most of them illegal. Even if you have to ride chicken buses and sleep in $10/night hostels you are living the surfer's dream. I've chased that rainbow for most of my 70 y/o life and never regretted a minute of it.

Nah if there’s tons of uncrowded spots why paddle out where it’s crowded, especially if your not from there. Don’t be a sheep

hi dan first of all thank you for your videos which really make you want to go on a surf trip! I'm planning to take a surf trip to El Salvador in August, I saw that it was the rainy season at that time. When did you leave and how long did you stay? Thanks in advance for the response, Antoine

Yes unfortunately Nica is definitely over rated. The majority of the spots offer very short rides. Waves closeout very fast as Dan confirmed. With all the new surf camps it has gone extremely crowded. The majority are beginners with no knowledge of surf etiquette. It used to be a paradise because no one was there. But now it has gotten impossible to catch good waves

I was in Morocco for 2 weeks last month and had no problems. We had a car and were off the beaten track, but we gave the local groms lifts from the beach to village every day, gave them some gear, locals were telling us the best tides for each spot etc. Sometimes they asked for some wax, occasional surf instructor a bit greedy in the water but other than that was cool. Also found when it was bigger but say a bit choppy, then pretty empty. Ideal for us from Scotland where seldom super clean anyway. But I think you need to be prepared to get away from organised groups or surfcamps if you wanna avoid the crowds there. The only aggression was driving in Agadir at rush hour, that's way scarier than anything in the water 😅

Most beachies - even the best are semi fickle at best, sometimes the banks just form and it will pump for a few weeks straight, other times they just dont want to play the game. I guess thats part of what makes scoring perfect beach breaks so good - add to that you can take off on the craziest shallowest tubes without the reef factor 🤙

Dan, love your videos and commentary. Inspired to get back on the path! Your series is pretty much spot on from my experiences in Nica and Sal a few years back. I assume Nica and CA in general are still suffering from drought. The lack of fresh sand kills the beachies and its been dry there for 10 years now. Try to get a boat to the left reef break back south,,,you know the one...We caught a boat from Santana If you get it with any size you will replenish your stoke supply. There is an epic surf camp in front of the break too but its not cheap. Boom is gnarly with any size. Undertow is formidable...the left point south is interesting but seemed really sharky due to the river mouth...Looking forward to your next spot, send home for money so we can keep your vids going!

Fortunately I can remember when most of Central America was unpopulated early eighties into the nineties is when it started to be known as La Costa Gringo and has been going downhill for finding uncrowded spots and over development which was great for locals but bad for the environment and infrastructure never kept up with the times Always appreciate and enjoy your content my friend Be well and Safe travels Dan the Man 👍🤙🏻
