Careful, some small holes are Extremely sticky. The skill of reading holes comes with time spent on the river.

Smiley Hole good 🙂, frowny hole bad ☹. Looking down river the water if the ends of the hole are going away, making a smiley face anything in the hole will work its way out to the edges and away. If the ends curl back upstream in a frown it is retentive...anything trying to escape is pushed back into the center and will stay in it. Also be aware of man made wiers which thoruhg their uniform and regular shape can form solid walls of water straight across with no exit either side.
