Back when you had to spot check everyday. No internet equaled no crowds. Surfed Blacks,Seaside Reef, Oceanside Pier by myself before. Mid -Late 80's

I surfed Blacks plenty in the mid 80's,…. there was basically always a crowd at least on the weekends.

Remembering Chris O'ROURKE, he would of been WORLD CHAMPION! Aloha from westside Oahu Hawaii MK! USD late 70... 80s!

As a kid I used to surf with Chris before his family moved him a couple miles north to Windansea. I moved to Kauai and came back after a while and was surfing a secret spot all by myself one afternoon and out he paddled. We surfed perfect shoulder high rights for a few hours and that was the last I saw of him. He passed away not too long after that. RIP, Chris.

@@joeblow1942 How's it been going @joeblow? Now does this secret little right hand or of yours south of a certain College and long staircase that we know of? I gave bird some of the photos that my mom had of Chris surfing down there with her after they graduated high school. They're at the shed on Marina if you go look🤙🏼
@joeblow19428 ай бұрын
@@BobbyJetty1502 Well, let me just say that there’s no staircase at that now not so secret “secret spot” and that access by land would usually involve getting a $10 trespassing ticket on your way back. But after a 4 hour sesh of fun perfect waves, and often by myself, I was happy to pay the $10. I will definitely check out those photos next time I’m at the Shed. Thanks!

@@MK-su6eg Chris was just a little guy when we surfed PB Cove and about 3 years younger than me. His big brother used to make these crazy narrow 15” wide boards for him then. I heard thru the grapevine that he had become quite the local terror at Windansea later. He wasn’t wearing the helmet the last time we surfed together at the secret spot. Do you know how long he wore it before he passed away?

I try to tell these guys today, there just weren't that many people in the water back then. I served in Coronado, and lived in LaJolla end of the 80's, and thru the 90's. I used to surf pumping Hospitals by myself,....a lot.
@Akooks7 ай бұрын
That’s everywhere now. I grew up surfing in the 90s in North County. There’d be way less people, you could find a spot while it was firing, all by ourselves. Now there’s more surfers than ever, all the sand is gone so most of the good surf spots don’t even break anymore.
@j55557857 ай бұрын
La Jolla?? Yeah, Thats cuz you guys were stabbing all the kooks - keeping the population low at the good spots. They dont let you do that anymore. The internet surf forecast was the first death blow - COVID really effed things up. Now everyone surfs, and honestly, most of them dont know why. Theres sooooooo much more soul in this video than the gopro vlog nerds today could dream of.

@@Akooks I'm from Point Loma, and I've surfed Black's, La Jolla, Swamis, plus of course PL/OB/MB (there's plenty of no crowd at the beachbreaks at random, not counting Black's Crescent),..….. it was always crowded unless super early or late, or maybe mid-day early afternoonm, or some really out of the way surf spot,…. and it's the same as it was then crowd wise. I've been surfing since 1982.
@Akooks4 ай бұрын
@@bonsummers2657 Best time to surf Swamis is during winter when there’s those massive wind swells, there’ll be no one out, raining and victory at sea type of conditions, but you can still get some amazing waves. Everything was just better before Surfline and e-bikes lol.

Dude, I love your posts of all the footage in SD (south or north county - I'm south county). I'm actually a 90s kid but born and raised SD so I love seeing this authentic footage of local killers at these breaks. I was really naïve in thinking locals / pros back then don't compare to today's talent but I'm always struck by seeing how radical and good-styled most of these surfers I see on the footage are, especially as local as SD. Now I feel like an idiot for thinking no one understood or dared trying "airs" anywhere before the mid-90s, except for Christian Fletcher. In this vid we see one in like the first minute haha. Please keep them coming. Good vibes/nostalgia watching these and great style and surfing.

@@BobbyJetty1502 Yup, I remember no leash was allowed. Of course surfing with no leash was a heck of a lot easier for the half men. I hated wearing leashes back then anyway.
