Awesome video. I love “the island”. One vital thing you forgot to show and talk about is the Grey geese that are everywhere as well. They add a Wonderful charm to the place

Used to hitch to the island in the 70s with mates, sleep in our board bags in the tee trees at summerlands. Hang out at Steve & Billies milk bar opposite right point. Remember the Dixon family. Got cars in the 80s and still spent weekends there. Good times. Been back recently, was sad as the place is so crowded and places all restricted. Surf culture gone mad.

'Uninterrupted'?????? What about King island and Tasmania??????
@DanHarmon123
@DanHarmon123 Жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! Yeah, so most of the time swells there come from the West or South West, which means they shoot between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. KI is more in the way, but swells are prominent enough to mean it doesn't really block it!

The three main surfing regions of Victoria (Surf Coast, Peninsula and PI) have a swell window faces south west. Most of the waves that arrive in the region are generated by low pressure systems that move to the south of Western Australia. These produce powerful, long period swells that flow straight into Bass Strait. The Surf Coast is protected by Cape Otway meaning it gets a lot less swell (unless the direction and period are just right), but the Peninsula and PI literally face this area of ocean, meaning they cop the full force. There's an 85 kilometer wide stretch of ocean between King Island and Cape Otway and these powerful South West groundswells pour through this gap, uninterrupted, and smash straight into the coast. This makes the beaches to the east of Melbourne (Gunna and Woolies specifically) some of the most consistent in Australia. Tasmania blocks most of the south swell, but there's so much south west energy emanating from the southern ocean that it doesn't really matter. Its why Victoria is such a good place to surf (if you can handle the cold and the wind). Western Victoria gets all of this energy (none is blocked) which makes it one of the best underground big wave regions of the world.
