** Video Description **
In this Scratch operators tutorial, we explore each block in the operators category. Each block is either a boolean or reporter block. We investigate how to remember the less than and greater than symbols in maths. We also explore some operations that we can do with strings. The mod operator is discussed as well as the rounding blocks.
** What is Surfing Scratcher? **
Surfing Scratcher wants to show learners, students, educators and teachers how to learn mathematics through coding games online with Scratch 3 programming projects. Whether you are a Scratch beginner, or you're an educator wondering how to use Scratch in your classroom or looking for lessons & resources for your classroom, Surfing Scratcher is here to help you on your journey.

Hi Mike, thanks for your comment. I love your suggestion and it has sparked my curiosity. Are you suggesting a video for general classroom escape themes/activities, or a video that shows learners how to make an escape clue/game on Scratch? I could see a whole unit whereby you spark learners with an escape room, then they could create their own in groups, build aspects of it in Scratch and then the rest of the class could participate, too!

@@SurfingScratcher I think both are great ideas! Scratch seems like such a perfect platform for gamifying learning objectives by turning them into spaces students can explore and tinker with until they "unlock" something. I know there are so many clue/puzzle/mystery possibilities hiding in those blocks!

@@mneum1 So cool. I'm gonna make this a priority for the new year. Maybe a foundational video first on creating a lock in Scratch. Maybe even using some cloud variables as I'm yet to explore those, as I suspect that would be a good way to 'hide' solutions. Then it could branch out into more escape room generalisations. I'm shifting into relief teaching next year, so should be a useful playground to test out some of these ideas! If you have any links to projects you've tried send them across. 🤙

How do you add the mod operator inside programs?
@SurfingScratcher
@SurfingScratcher 4 жыл бұрын
I use the mod operator when I want to find odd and even numbers. Say when I'm creating a checkered grid and I want each box alternated. I can use a mod for that. If I divide a number by 2, it will have no remainder when the number is even and a remainder of 1 when it's odd. That's just one application. When applying it in other contexts, just ask yourself if a remainder is useful.

Round works on decimal values. To round to 45 or some other integer, you'll need to use an if block with a condition. If less than 45, set to 45

@SurfingScratcher

@@imperialprime7991 Hi and thanks or your message. How is your understanding of division? Say you have 18 eggs and you want to pack those eggs into cartons that have 6 spaces. How many cartons would you fill? You would fill 3 cartons because: 18 ÷ 6 = 3 Here, we are skip counting in 6s. Each time we reach a multiple of 6, we need a new carton. Say, we had 19 eggs this time. We’d still fill 3 cartons but we have 1 left over: 19 ÷ 6 = 3 remainder 1 We could start filling the spaces of the 4th carton of eggs now. MOD tells us how many we have left over. It’s the remainder. We could write the first example like this to show that it fits perfectly. 18 % 6 = 0 Then, to show that we have an extra one left over, we’d write it like this: 19 % 6 = 1 The Scratch operator would look like this (19 mod 6) and that would evaluate to 1. I would encourage you to use the mod operator in Scratch to create some more examples and predict what the result is. Here some to get you started: 12 ÷ 6 = 2 so 12 % 6 = ? 15 ÷ 5 = 3 so 15 % 5 = ? 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2 so 17 % 5 = ?

@@imperialprime7991 I find the mod operator useful when I am creating grids. If I want 5 columns in my grid and I start adding row items, when I get to the 5th column, I know that mod == 0 so that's a flag for me to start a new line. Here's some pseudocode with a variable called counter: // I want 5 Columns and 4 Rows Repeat 20 times if ( [length of counter] mod 5) == 0 then start a new row do that by increasing y value or adding 1 to a row count etc. add item to counter -> (length of counter + 1) You could also use the remainder of mod as a multiplier to move the x value of an item. counter MOD 5 = 1 then 1 * 50 = 50 then 2 * 50 = 100 then 3 * 50 = 150 ...
