GREAT VIDEO. It's a video that needed to be made. His insight on the constant pressure of water, and the back truck issues is something non surfers would not know.Also his high marks on the CX is a bit of confirmation bias on my part, but in my experience, myself and other surfers I know, really like the CX best. Also if you notice on what surf skate folks refer to as compression and extension, he really unweights on the extension, which was great to see. You can always tell when you see someone on a surf skate who actually surfs, there's little nuances like that and driving with his back leg through turns that someone who doesn't surf, just doesn't have those little things(not that it's a problem as long as you're having fun). Well done. Would enjoy a part II on some transition.

I second this. Literally what I wanted to say. Carver CX is the best surf trainer you can get. I’m a surfer and I already tried so many trucks. Imma talk about Yow cause it’s usually the one that people say it’s the best along with smoothstar, I have a Yow Meraki and I really like it but for surf training I would not recommend it, it’s too loose, surfing is more about surfing on rail and leaning, that movement that you do to pump the skateboard does not carry to the water. So I always practice with my Carver CX or the Slide, never with the Yow. People don’t understand what is surfing rail to rail, compressing and extending, leaning, it’s basically what you have to learn to be a good surfer.

Thanks for these comments. I just got a Carver CX as a bday present and I thought I will have to give it back and change it for a YOW because people told me that only the YOW will give you the "surf feeling" and you can only use those as a surf trainer. So maybe I just keep that CX and see how it goes.

Dope review Ace! Talkin' Lean & Rebound - I see it exactly like you. That said, I have not tested the Aquilo & Spice surfskate yet. When pimping a spring based adapter it is possible to achieve better flow than when using a bushing based surf -truck, that's what I've found out. Not talking about the V-truck though.

I really agree with Ace, I’m a surfer and Carver CX is the best truck for surf training, for sure. If you also upgrade bearings and wheels (Orangatang i.e) no other surfskate can beat it.

Loved this review. As a surfer I completely agree with Ace's comments about the board pushing back when you lean. This is analogous to open face carving on a wave. I bought a 34" Smoothstar #77 starting out. Make no mistake this board is hard to master. It's extremely divey when leaning into turns and although the wheelbase is 18.5" the thruster adapter sets you back at least 3 inches. For me as a surfer I have to compromise my natural surf stance to accomodate for the shortened wheelbase. Yes it makes the board turn fast like crazy but if you are a beginner starting out you will be filled with a false sense of confidence that you can turn a surfboard just as easily. A skateboard is 2' where a high performance shortboard is 5'4" at the very least. Remember that on a wave you will be going twice the speed which means you cannot rely on a short wheelbase alone to rip. You need a combination of compression, leaning and twisting. Surf trainers like Carver or Slide help strengthen these habits whereas surf simulators like Smoothstar and SwellTech are over responsive to upper body movements and if not kept in check can reinforce the wrong habits. I recently bought slide surfskate trucks and attached them to a 33" board. The slide trucks offset your wheelbase by about half an inch. So I have about four inches to spare. This made the world of difference to me. The slide trucks with the 19.5" wheelbase resembled that surf feeling tenfold for me. I do not have to compromise my surf stance and I can really lean into those turns, especially heelside.

As a surfer who owns 2 SwellTech's, 4 Carver's all with C7's and 2 YOW's with Meraki S5's, I personally think the YOW Meraki is the best surf trainer for me. I bought the YOW's this year and they are the only surfskates I ride now. Great questions asked by Steve and I can appreciate Ace's take on all the truck sets he rode in that environment.

Hey Billy why do you prefer the Meraki over the C7? The way I see it, Meraki has better lean and feels a little looser. On the other hand C7 is much more durable (Spring/Bearings) & lightweight. Plus the C7 offers better flow.

@@DoubleOverhead can’t speak for billy but I have both and prefer the meraki as well. Out of the box it just has more dive, lean and rebound. It feels more responsive and energetic to me. That being said a lot of this can be customized by playing around with aftermarket bushings (& pivots) like from venom and riptide. You can significantly change the feel (looseness, rebound, lean) with the right bushings. The feel of the CX for example can change a lot since it’s purely bushing based.

@@muckeyn Thanks for replying Mickey! I am using a medium Riptide street cone & flat washer for my C7. Plus a really short cup washer for the cone bushing roadside. Like this the C7 gained a lot of dive but still feels more stable than the Meraki. After riding Meraki for a few sessions, I thought the Meraki riding feel was superior - afterwards, when skating C7 for a while, I noticed that C7 offers much better flow. The secret of a perfect C7 riding feel is defintely dialing in the bushing and washer setup. I used to prefer the Meraki riding feel over the C7 - now I have changed my mind. The way I see it flow is just as important as lean & rebound. A customized C7 does it all where as the Meraki feels kind of too divey and lacks of flow in comparison to my C7.

@@DoubleOverhead custom bushings improve the meraki as well. They are both good trucks but I simply like the spring back in the meraki more. I know it’s less “surf training” like but I prefer a more energetic truck.

Something everyone should consider is that minor adjustments, things like simple wrench tuning, minor modifications like softer or harder bushings, angle risers under trucks, foot placement on the deck of the board, wheel changes (ie: size, design, durometer, etc.) and more all can make a HUGE difference with most equipment, regardless of the brand or the model. Think about test driving a new car, WITHOUT adjusting the driver's seat position, the steering wheel tilt, side mirrors, etc and then attempting to fairly rate 10 completely different car models, scoring each one on their personal comfort/enjoyment/ease to drive for you based on either the factory presets or the minor adjustments made to that vehicle by some person whom drove that car into the car lot where you are, or maybe the person whom test drove that particular car just before you had the opportunity to test drive it..... I have surfed for more than 40 years, and one thing that truly amazes me to this day, is how so many surfers fail to understand how something as simple as trying different fins in the exact same surfboard (the size, shape, materials, fin placement, etc.) can make that same surfboard feel like a completely different surfboard. While my skating experience goes back to the 70's, I have only been surfskating for a few years now... but I can honestly tell you that I have experienced much more enjoyment with surfskates by tuning and making minor adjustments with everything I have tried. I have discovered that (much like with surfing) that what feels best is customizing your ride based on your skill level, your weight & size, your riding style, the terrain you have to work with (not all waves are the same) .... Most people who start surfing in the ocean, ride equipment in the beginning that is very different than what they end up enjoying once they progress through the learning curve. Granted the learning curve with ocean surfing is a gigantic curve, with most surfers never getting even close to the Master Level.... Meanwhile surfskating can be rather easy to progress thru the curve, as it is pretty easy once you have the basics down... much like snowboarding compared to riding skis... as most progress through the levels rapidly on a snowboard... even faster if one is willing to tune and modify one's equipment and their personal style and the terrain you most often ride. I personally have found that customizing whatever boards I have tried has made for a much higher performance and personal enjoyment with every surfskate I have ridden to date... Don't be afraid to tune.... a simple 1/4 turn of one nut can make a noticeable difference in the ride.... keep tweaking and testing the same ride before deciding if it is the board or the tuning (or lack of tuning).... would you try to judge the quality of a high end musical instrument without tuning it first? As a surfer, I have tried yow and smoothstar and really like both. I tried the swell tech a few days ago and was shocked at how bad it is. I had the exact same reaction to the mechanism that he did. It forces you to surf flat which is the opposite of what you should be practicing on a surf skate.

@@serpentor21 yes. I have a Kai Lenny Dragon as well-bought from a buddy-love them both. I love the front truck on the slide but the deck has next to no concave. So riding flat ground is no issue but riding the dragon on transition or bowls is preferred for me because my feet grip a little better. The deck of the Fish Pavones slide has some cracking but it has been used a lot so I have no complaints. I recommend it among a quiver.

Loving your content Steve. I agree 100%. Carver cx is the best all-round surf skate in my opinion... (get wheelbase to suit your stance for sure).I love the Carver Booster 16 inch wheelbase (because it locks in my front foot) for around streets and driveways. 17 inch Oracle or Loaded Poke with cx for pumping for speed and cruising longer distances. I'm 6ft/ 72kg. Team with Orangatang Love Handles wheels. 78a blue (amazing acceleration, smoothness, grippy, fast slashing carving and pumping or 80a Love Handles orange wheels (superb top end speed and carving on smoother concrete. Also purple Orangatang bushings rear and standard Carver front. Chuck in some Bones Super Red bearings and you have the ultimate surfskate🔥🔥 Experimenting with angled risers especially at the front at the moment which potentially could make it even better! Anyone got feedback on this innovation? The Carver Triton cx is amazing too when suped up...it actually has a slightly looser feeling to the original cx I reckon.

I bought a Slide Gussie about a month ago after seeing one of your videos and I love it. The Slide V3 trucks seem to be appreciated by everyone who tries them. It would be interesting if you could do a similar video with a skateboarder, basically going in the opposite direction to this one. I'm thinking of getting a Carver C5 because it's sold as being more skateboard-like for ollies and such.

Fantastic Video, I’m a surfer of 49 years and I’ve been in to surfskates only about seven years I’ve tried them all done lot of comparative reviews I do find the SmoothStar is the most accurate replication of surfing a wave and that exact feeling of the fins through the wave ..Mainly because the rear trucks on a SmoothStar are dead tight they’re not meant to be touched they’re meant to be dead stuif non turning …just like a Formula 1 car with the back wheels don’t turn as your go into turn directly same as pivoting from the tail area of a board so the feeling the rider was feeling was definitely on the Carver CX was the back trucks are “turning” ie moving giving you a slide through the turn affect or giving you a drifting affect… where it’s now pivoting from the centre of the board rather from the tail …. no Surfboard has that feeling that’s what I think he’s trying to explain. Any surf training device should have a dead straight and tight rockhard rear trucks / wheels as they shouldn’t turn, other than that I think he was spot on with his analysis. Awesome video, great that you and Ace could team up to share insights on a variety of boards. Loved how Ace could share his perspective on feel and wave riding frontside vs backside, hold in the wave face and leaning on rail. I would love to see this further developed by braking down into surfing maneuvres such as bottom turn hold, front side carve, cutbacks, front side and backside snaps etc. Also use on ramps/bowls in comparison to skating on the flat would be really helpful. I appreciate that would take filming at multiple locations but would help further see how different skates perform to also inform consumers make better decisions. This still was a really great concept to get a surfers opinion of the boards. From this review it looks like CX, Yow, Slide, Spiceskate and Smoothstar performed the best for Ace.

I am surprised but confirmed. I do surf just a little and I found Carver CX with pretty soft bushings feels like my surfboard. Also can confirm that slide has a loose but good feel. What I now need to clarify which truck makes a cool surf feel on a log let us say 38 plus length. Tried waterborne but not cool. Width is also an issue for trucks so spice skate could be cool to add longboard trucks. But just for trying it is fairly overpriced to buy😂

One of the comments on r/surfskate that really caught my eye; is that the combination of the C-7(and other front trucks from other systems too) and the Waterborne rear rail to rail adapter is the closest to surf emulation that they have experienced. One of the things that interested me about the Aquilo system is the different spring grades. One fact that continues to be proven time and time again, it all boils down to personal preference. The Curfboard Performer looks and looks like it rides identical to my32.5" 20" wheelbase fish w/ the Waterborne. I can't wait to see how my 44" pintail(off camber flex)rides now that I have 129mmSTK(low profile) trucks and Khiro 10mm angled riser pads to compensate for the off camber flex in the deck. With the 177mm RKP and regular risers it was a blast. I really needed a empty parking lot to get my pump and carve on with the pintail and 90mm pavement gobblers. Why no Hamboards?

Interesting to see how he compared the trucks. Some of the systems he liked were the ones that he was lifting the nose of the board because it wasn’t responding. It was a great idea getting a surfer like Ace, but perhaps show photos of him surfing to see how credible his surfing credentials are. But it was great that Ace said that everyone surfs different. The other part is what is the surfing test? Longboard, Fish or shortboard. Regardless, this is a really bad test and not complete. If you are going to do this sort of test, you need to look at it from a surfing perspective. Simply riding on a narrow strip of concrete is not a true test. That is just pumping or cruising on a wave - all the boards should be similar. The true test is to replicate the most common turns in surfing and that would definitely be a bottom turn and top turn, both forehand and backhand. The key to surfing is these manoeuvres not just pumping. Surfing = bottom turns and top turns. Not just pumping.

@@SurfskateLove Of course I read your disclaimer but then why do the test if you could have sorted out that issues. Ace sounds like a nice guy but he didn’t really “surf it” the board. He didn’t really do a proper bottom turn which is one the first things you do when catching a wave. Most of the riding was just pumping. Perhaps you could have set up cones or a course for him to ride where he can do a bottom turn and top turn repeatedly for each board. You say that Ace knows what he is doing but how does the audience know that, what proof is there? Can we see him surf? When he was riding the Carver, he was lifting the front truck - didn’t look smooth at all but yet rated that one his favourite. Bit weird? He liked the Spice board but then lifted the front truck. Bit weird? He liked the slide but then he looked the must unstable Maybe take all the brand names away - don’t tell Ace (or a surfer) which brand they are before riding them, hide the trucks which give it away too! What is the testing criteria? Perhaps do a side by side test split screen? Perhaps test for each manurer in surfing? There are some brands/models that are suited to different riders, did he get the right model for him or was it just random? So many questions but all valid for proper test. Hats off for doing these videos but its probably not a great test which offers full transparency.

@@user-er3nv8mt8s and it is ...when he pick up CX trucks as the most surf feel ones and swelltech as too flat ride .... and i think we all know that the CX trucks are the most street cruise focused ones .... also i would suggest even i know it cannot be done ...when someone who is 5`6 or even less and going to try the 40` swelltech which is obviously too big for him...it is also misleading ... its the same when a guy over 6 tries 29` one .... maybe thats also why he picked up as the best the smallest one ... this kind of tests should be made as Loz suggested and with a right lenght of a board ... otherwise it will end like this one .. even tho he asked good questions but didnt think it through.

Hello, I really enjoyed this video. But you gave him the Swelltech to try hahahahahaha leave it unless he warmed up with the other models. This Surfskate thing is actually very complicated, since in the first place Surfing boards do not have a concave, and their edges are not like those of a surfskate board. We have to clarify this for all these people today, not being surfers with a lot of experience or starting out in this. be clear on what a surfskate is. On the other hand, professional surfers or those who have more time and already have a surfskate, not all of them carry Yow, Carver, Slide etc. I think everyone chooses the one that suits them. Or the one that helps you in what you want. I could tell you why if I surf, and I have been able to try some brands like Carver which was the first I had, the Glass Off model, then I tried Yow with his old truck before the Meraki, which are good ok but I kept looking until I found one or two marks that would give me that sensation of surfing on the asphalt, or in a bowl. I'm not a super surfer ok but I know the feeling that a board gives you in the wave. Well, after trying I liked 100% Smoothstar and seeing many videos of good surfers I think I was not wrong, now I was curious to buy a swelltech and it is another one that I will give 100% after I get used to it hahahahahaha it is much more radical that smoothstar because it makes you like the surfboard to move your feet and control your balance. But watch out, ok, this is for all those who are new to surfskate, be very careful because surfskate can also give you bad habits. You must first know what you want it for and if you are a surfer, do exercises, thinking about what you do on the wave. You must alternate practices with cones and bowl. Remember that one thing is the asphalt and another thing is a wave. That is why the surfskates have a concave to give us more security in the tread. There are many factors in reality with this surfskate theme, it is not just selling them, it is really trying the different models and seeing which one suits you best. And remember something very important. Not every surfer has a surfskate and not everyone who has a surfskate is a surfer. 👍🏽🇻🇪

I've recently been looking into getting a C7 front truck.... I think the rear truck feel Ace is talking about is due to the geometry of the C2 rear truck having the axle so far behind the pivot axis point which creates a bit of a trailing castor wheel effect that makes it turn sooner and sharper when first starting to turn. I've ridden one on the rear and to me it feels like my rear foot is turning too much and coming out from under me a bit. I much prefer the feel of an RKP truck on the rear so I'm going to try running a C7 on the front and Paris type RKP on the rear and see how that feels.

Great content Steve. I like these different perspectives you’re showing. One issue I’d imagine is some of the decks aren’t ideal for Ace (style, stance, etc…) and kind of throw off the feel of the truck system, especially if it’s his first time riding the board/truck. Of course it’d be a total nightmare trying to swap everything to make it even. Also unrealistic for your average consumer who will most likely buy a complete as is.

I hate to tell you all this, but skating surf style is not surfing. Different variables...although you can mimmick surfing it's a completely different feel then when you riding a 6ft board on moving Ocean. I disagree with the back wheel assesment. Like dude say's it probably needs adjusting. I myself don't need any special truck's or board to pull off surf style skating maneuver's. I bought a Carver and it's a fun ride, but I didn't really need it since that's my natural style on all boards. I just figured why not add one to my collection and I'm glad I did.

I just put Yow Meraki S5s on my Carver Black Tip, (replaced my C7s) - I find the Meraki trucks waaaay smoother and "silkier" than the C7, which now feels sluggish to me.

i dont like how you biased the review by emphesizing which one is the "pure surf trainer" and "hybrid". better method should just let the surfer fully catagorize it by themself without your biases. just ask them to catagorize those 10 bord based on few list: 1. which one mimic surfboard feeling the most aka surftrainer. 2. which one you most enjoy the most and here should then be asked why you enjoy them is it because it feel like surfing or something else.

Those definitions are biases. They're technical definitions with clear explanations of what I mean by them. And as I say in all my reviews, just because I categorize something as a hybrid or street cruiser doesn't not mean it won't work as a pure surf trainer as well. It just means that it's more versatile, based on measurable properties of the truck, not my personal preferences or biases.

About the swelltech, im not sure if its the old trucks he tested, or just not used to it. I had the exact same feeling when i tried it the first time years ago, i just couldnt lean as much. I never rode it again, got the newer version (2022), and i feel i can lean a lot now. I ride it in bowls all the time and love the feeling. Not sure if i just adjusted my technique, but i feel a lot more lean possibility compared to even a smoothstar

Currently trying to decide between Carver Greenroom C7 or CX. Which truck do you find easier to generate speed from pumping alone? I have other boards for other types of skating and was thinking this next board purchase would be for flat ground pump-carving. I’m leaning towards the C7 because I’m worried the CX will be too similar to my cruiser and I don’t want two boards that do the same thing. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

@@SurfskateLove YOOO UPDATE! Tried it to day for the first time ITS AMAZING totally recommend it It feels a lot like pumping a surffboard and i already got the hang of it!! So day 1 i learned how to pump an do a complete turn to both sides. Though i have to say im a bit concerned about the quality of the deck..it seems to be getting bumps just by touching other objects.

@@onionsnevercry4685 That seems to be a common pattern w surfskate completes. The trucks, wheels and bearings are fine, but the decks are kinda half-assed. Order a custom deck from Texican or Life and get exactly what you want! Surf’s up!

Nice video but I don't understand that if he likes the Slide one, why do you insist with the others. It is like if you would not want that he chooses the Slide. There is a lot of surfers who likes Slide and dont like for example Carver. I for example, find Slide much better than the rest. I find that there is a lot of marketing on the top brands. If you would have tested a Soulboardiy deck with Slide trucks and wheels, wich one he would choose for sure?

Sad you need a pc disclaimer to critique a truck because someone may have feelings hurt. Is this skateboarding or powder puff badminton in a safe space?! Anyways, I like the idea that you’d have more experience people opine about the feel of each boards’ ride. I also appreciate the acknowledgment that sorta highlights the issue that is: people who haven’t a clue what they’re doing all have SurfSkate tutorials. SurfSkating is the only genre of board sport without a right of passage that would naturally, by its culture, eliminate this phenomena. Thus, every peckerwood without recognizable credential can teach without having mastered anything themselves. I’m for free speech and sharing, but the part that blows me away is that the people who watch are fooled by fancying editing to follow, and learn from, people who can’t even do. So, I think since you’ve produced some great content in the SurfSkate world, you’re doing yourself a major justice by having people who have tons of experience, and have gone through the cultural rights of passage, give their two cents. 🤙🤙👏👏👏

I understand what you're saying and agree with you on the whole. However, if I may add some nuance to this. I think what a lot of great riders and experienced surfers don't understand is how hard it is for us newbie non-surfers to learn. We need so much more hand-holding than we find online, even with as many free tutorials as there are. So I consider myself to be an intermediate rider at best, and I produced a video course. Not because I'm an expert rider, but precisely because I'm not -- which means I can relate to the struggles of newbies better than surfers. So I give people a lot of non-traditional tips that I've never learned from surfers that work really well for newbie non-surfers. So I've found my fresh perspective to actually be an advantage. This is not to defend myself, but simply to make the point that we can't be too quick to judge what other people find valuable. My tutorials are absolutely worthless to experience riders, but newbies love them. I guess I just look at the intention of the instructor. Anyone out there producing content in this niche is just doing it for passion, because there's no money in it. So I guess my final perspective is, let the viewer decide what's valuable to him or her. Thoughts?
