Just was listening to your video and wanted to comment on the speed ring advice. Nowadays, speed rings really aren’t necessary with proper bearing design. The times when you need them will be on bearings that aren’t already spaced properly, and that’s going to include most bearings that don’t come with built-in style bearing spacers. In almost every built-in I’ve ever seen, you’re going to get an extra mm or so out of that outer edge of the inner race, which is doing the exact job that you described is the job of the speed ring-forcing the bearing to sit as flush as possible and to give some space between the truck axle facing interface and the shield of the bearing. What would cause slow-down there is if the shield were rubbing on the face of the hanger. The inner race of the bearing is not designed to spin, so it’s perfectly fine to butt that thing up against the hanger face nice and tight (unless you’re getting binding due to improper spacing, as you mentioned). Great videos! Thanks for all the hard work and dedication!

Just wanted to note that you shouldn't loosen your axle nuts at all. Hand spin is in no way indicative of how your bearings perform. By loosening the axle nuts you will actually decrease performance and negatively impact the lifespan of components. Always make sure they are tight, and ignore the freespin myth. Other than that, appreciate your channel!

Steve! Newbie here. Thanks for this! I was ready to give up on my Yow Huntington with cinetic wheels because the things just won’t roll well after pumps. I watched this video, and jeeeeez found out my wheel spin stops within 3 secs. I got mine from SkatePro and realized how fricken awful the bearings were. Slapped some Reds on these and danggg I love surfskating again. Also, the S5 squeaks right outta the box like you said. I couldn’t find a paraffin wax but turns out candle wax/shavings worked. (Not the soy ones but the birthday candle type ones) But yeah thanks! Wouldn’t have known!

Looking forward to a review on the Bolsa. I have held it and it feels on the heavy side. I personally don’t like heavier boards for surfskating. I put a YOW Meraki system on a Loaded Omakase deck and it felt very sluggish. Omakase deck is a lot lighter than Bolsa deck though. However a YOW Malibu deck is around 5 inches longer and around 10% lighter. So for its length, it seems a fairly heavy deck. In the end it’s all in the ride. I’ll wait till I see somebody riding one and try it myself.

Hi I have a mechanical engineering baclground. Please know that some bearings don't roll when not under load. They are always specified for a weight range and this might be the weight of the board or the person. So sometimes the bearing doesn't spin if you pull the wheel, but eith the load of a person they might be great. These are not necessarily expensive industry grade bearings. Sometimes companies have to source these things creatively and so you might have these. But that should not be seen as a quality problem. They are oftentimes more efficient.

Jehu V2 bearings just like other so called built-in bearings have speed rings rings built in to the bearing. No need to add speed rings. Not sure if it’s bad to add speed rings to built-in bearings, but it does push out the wheel slightly further.

It arrived here but when I was doing a simple test ride I noticed a lot of creaking noises... I'm working up the courage to give a review, do you recommend anything... Could I have a problem with this? )

Hi Steve, thanks for helping newbies. One comment, i think the speed rings are very important as they are the same diameter as the axle of the bearing. Therefore they act as a spacer between the bearing and the bolt / hanger. Without speed ring, you may get contact between those and the rubber ring of the bearing

No need to add speed rings to Jehu V2 bearings. They have speed rings built in. As far as I know these type of bearings are called build-in bearings. Not sure if it’s bad to add speed rings, but it does push out the wheels slightly more. It also defeats the main benefit of of built-in bearings, you can quickly change wheels without having to mess with speed rings. I have lots of wheels and just put these Jehu V2 bearings in all of them😂.

I’m new to surfskate but street skateboarded for over 25 years… You need to break in bushings. So tighten the bushing to where you like and start riding. Break in period is usually a day or two of a couple of hours of riding… but they will still be breaking for the first 10 days… that’s one reason why professionals don’t change their trucks as often as their decks and wheels.

My front foot feels strange since I normally have my foot perpendicular to the board. I feel the wheel wells force me to have a 45 degree angle where my heel is behind the wheel well and the ball of my foot is in front of the wheel well. It is just my riding style? Or is it actually better for me to have the ball of my foot actually on top of the wheel well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I see in the Carver CX there are upgraded bushings. If you're a heavier rider above 220 lbs how does one tell if they need a harder duro bushing for their surfskate? How does one tell if bushings need to be changed at all with a surfskate? Previously with regular skateboard TKP trucks if I get wheel bite or if the lean isn't gradual I change the stock 90A cushions to something harder or if I have to tighten down to the point where the bushing is looking like a burger I change the cushion out.

Hey Steve, question: I bought also some knuckles for my CX. But I find that the big washer that you need to lift at the front truck like in the video scratches while turning the truck the inside of the truck. Have you also experienced this problem? Maybe the nut is not tightened enough?

had a question. I want larger wheels without wheelbite. So I thought putting a spacer betweent track and board to accomplish just that. Did you ever try spacers and can tell how the higher stance affects the ride.

Of course! All the time. I'll be doing a video soon on wheelbite.

Best thing to do in my opinion is add a riser on both trucks. On all my stock boards I got wheelbite, even with the stock wheels. I do ride all my boards very loose, bushings and springs. So I added 1/8 riser pads to all my boards. I really like the Paris 1/8 riser pads as they perfectly fit a YOW Meraki truck, better than the typical rectangular pads. Benefit of just putting riser pads on all boards is that you can also experiment with larger wheels. I have also tried 1/4 riser pads, but that wasn’t necessary for wheelbite. I wanted to try 85mm Orangatang wheels😂. There is a slight effect on riding style, the board leans over a bit easier. You can compensate for that by slightly tightening the bushings. Other way to void wheelbite is to use harder bushings, different washers etc.

The front bushing on my CX slips out of the truck when I make tight turns. I can keep riding it normally but I don’t think it’s good for the bushing. What can I do about it?
@SurfskateLove

It's not that it's bad for the bushing, but rather it's bad for the truck itself because you'll start grinding metal on metal. I'd have to see it to know what the problem is.

Unfortunately quality control is not that great for a lot of these brands. I would check the following as well (all based on experience): - See if the tips of the hangers that go into the pivot cups are smooth. If not, than the pivot cup will be trashed within a few hours of riding. Might have to use a piece of sandpaper to smoothen them a bit. It’s aluminum, so not that hard. - On a YOW you might consider replacing 2 of the bolts on the front truck (the ones towards the middle of the deck). They only go in roughly halfway into the baseplate. Longer ones and then put a nut on top. - I raised all the bolts on my decks by putting a small washer under them so they are raised above the deck a bit. Improves grip a lot, especially on YOW decks. Might have to use longer bolts in some cases. - Open up YOW Meraki system and put some lithium grease on the 2 washer/bearing sets and on the spring. - Personal choice, break warranty on a Smoothstar and put grease on the sets of washer/needle bearings. I don’t think that the official Smoothstar advice is going to work for the big needle bearing inside the Thruster (drip a bit of oil from above without opening the Thruster). Smoothstar has super friendly prices if you need to replace these bearings😱. - Start buying spare parts when you see them immediately😂. Availability is very poor from the surfskate brands and their prices are typically outrageous. Equal or better quality from third party suppliers, often at a fraction of the price. Case in point, YOW washer set. The price is hilarious. - Consider replacing wheels, bushings, bearings, pivot cups with better quality third party ones. - To be honest, don’t buy a complete board. Source everything yourself for a better price, better quality experience😂.

💯 Love it, man. Funny on the YOW Meraki. I actually had included that in this video. But it made it way too long, so I split them up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6uyfpJsqN-haKM And you're so right. Unfortunately, newbies don't have a clue how to build their own. Unless you have a solid skateboarding/longboarding background and you do good research and know how to listen to, I think you really have to start with a complete.
@rvdt4ever
@rvdt4ever 2 жыл бұрын
@@SurfskateLove Hard to pick 1 complete to recommend. I love my Smoothstar for extreme carving. I ride every morning 30 minutes or so and afterwards take a shower at the beach. I love my YOW Malibu for longer distance, still great carving. I ride every evening with music for an hour or so. If I had to pick just 1 complete, then I would say a YOW with a wheelbase at the wider end of the “magic formula” for somebody. At the end of the day, it depends mainly on how you like to ride. However if you are new to it and have no clue then I would go with that. Which one would you pick Steve? Can’t go Soulboardy😂

This may surprise you, but for newbies especially I'm going with a Carver CX system all the way. 1. It's the simplest system out there, and it works awesome. (The more I ride surfskates, the more I pretty much just ride either a Meraki or a CX). You won't run into the maintenance issues you have with the more complicated systems. 2. I prefer Carver decks WAY over YOW. I don't like a single thing about the 4 YOW decks I've had, and I'll never buy another. On the other hand, I've bought 8 Carvers and I love them all. 3. I think Carver has the best, highest quality complete systems. Deck, wheels, measurements, everything. I feel way more confident recommending a Carver over a YOW to almost any rider. Especially with YOWs new piece of shit URA wheels. The only thing I even want from YOW anymore is the Meraki. 4. Here's a big one: When you understand my wheelbase formula and you have a solid understanding of both the Carver and YOW landscape (in terms of their deck options and the measurements of those decks), you understand that riders have a much better chance of a Carver fitting them than a YOW. YOWs dimensions are all over the board, and no one has a clue how to translate them into the ride, and YOW has zero guidance whatsoever. Carver doesn't have good guidance either, but because their trucks accommodate a wider stance on a shorter board, it's much more likely that a newbie will get one that fits. Whereas with a YOW, as I've personally experienced, most people will buy based on length, only to discover that the wheelbase on their model is too narrow for them. Smoothstar: Pure surf trainer. Stable for newbies, and I've met newbies who love it. But limited to small areas. Not a cruiser. And I hate their company. They don't give a shit about customers. All they care about is making money. Slide: Okay, not nearly as good as a Carver. And so worth it to spend an extra $50 to get a Carver over a Slide. Waterborne: I think it's a piece of shit. 😂And it's a paradoxical product because it's intended to be that cheap entry into surfskating for newbies. But it's very difficult to work with, especially newbies, and EXTREMELY difficult to get the right measurements on a Waterborne set-up. And since we're talking about only completes, the Waterborne piece of shit carbon completes only make the piece of shit adapter even worse. 😂 SwellTech: For advanced riders and surf training only.

@@SurfskateLove I see where you are coming from. I’m waiting for your CX Bolsa review. That might be my last buy. Got a Smoothstar, 3 YOWs and a Slide. I started on a Smoothstar. That was fun the first day😂. That board went flying all over the place. Btw, I raised all the bolts on my YOW decks with a washer ring underneath the bolt on top of the deck. Much improved grip. But not great decks, especially the smaller sizes.
