This is the only serious alternative to a Fender tube reverb tank. The FET transistors replicate the tube response and make the unit far more rugged and reliable (and cheaper) too. If you want that true drip, this is it.

The Victoria has the Reverberato it is tube driven, but also has the tremelo. Very expensive. There are others out there making tube driven stand alone reverb units as well. However this on come in at an affordable price point.

I LOVE my Metal. It’s the most enjoyable effect I’ve owned in 25 years of playing. If I was in a purist retro surf band I’d have got the Classic as it looks cool, but the true bypass and lighter weight made the Metal more flexible. Also love the volume knob to allow balancing the perceived volume when the effect is engaged-every reverb and delay should have this.

This really is the video I've been waiting for. Bought a Compact a few weeks ago, but I definitely also want to get the Metal and compare them for myself. The Metal might be a better fit for me, though the Compact is an absolutely brilliant design and implementation. Thanks Brett!

Did you compare the Metal and the Compact? Seems to me here that the Metal is even more better sounding.

I need one of these in my life asap! Hard to choose which one, though. Metal supposedly sounds a bit fuller and is a bit cheaper at Thomann where I usually order, Compact has a bit more flexibilty with the 2 mixer controls. Size isn't really a factor since I don't gig, I'll most likely keep it off my board anyway. Sounds like I might as well go for the big boy. Pretty sure every other spring/drippy reverb will feel like a compromise compared to the Surfybears.

Is it true that it can only do drip and not a subtle, warm reverb without the drip attack, if you want to use it in front of a tweed amp but are not into surf sound.

@@KipCount Not at all. Half the reason I'm afraid to buy one is because I will then to be too curious about the others. Do you find the Compact to have enough depth for your uses?
@KipCount
@KipCount 4 жыл бұрын
@@accurtis2763 The indecision over models is what's made me hesitate so long as well. I can't state boldly enough how much I like the Compact, but at the same time, I'm craving something that I just can't put my finger on. I ordered a Metal version as well and should have it in a couple days. I need to compare for myself. I do think Brett highlighted the differences here though. To be fair, his first playthrough on the Compact, his Mixer setting was relatively low, and given the decreased depth inherent to the Compact, it sounded way less impressive after hearing the Classic and Metal before it. Once Brett dialed things up a bit on the Compact, you heard more of what it can do. But even at the higher settings, it's not that cavernous, bombastic thing you get out of the larger tank versions. Again, the Compact is brilliant, and it's crazy versatile. For a subtle to not-so-subtle multi-style reverb, the Compact rules. The dual mixer setting is crazy useful. I do find the Compact Decay control to not be as useful as I thought. In general, I keep it all the way up. And the Decay control doesn't really do anything at all until you stop playing. It's just a gate (a very smooth gate though). But as long as you are playing, you're getting the full decay/sustain. If you're doing choppy percussive playing, and turn the decay control down, you'll get the benefits of the gate. In any case, I can't wait to get the Metal here so I can compare.
@accurtis2763
@accurtis2763 4 жыл бұрын
@@KipCount I'm staying tuned to see what you think. Your take on the Decay control helps as well, since it's one factor I'm taking into account in this decision. Thank you. 🙏

@@accurtis2763 I'll try to remember to post back here about my thoughts. Don't think I mentioned about my usage and other gear. I'm using this "primarily" for surf stuff, but no strictly traditional 60s surf. I like modern stuff, and stuff like is also a little punk in heritage. I also use a lot of other pedals when I'm NOT playing surf music, so the true bypass pedals really are the only practical models for me, unless I want to be unplugging and replugging things all the time, which I don't. The Compact really does excel at being an all around reverb, and works great with my other pedals. My hope is the Metal version can be as versatile as the Compact when dialing back the Tone and Dwell. I don't see why it wouldn't be. We shall see!

I have been considering one of these for a while. sound good but they seem a bit pricey. Reverb tanks are cheap, MOSFETs are cheap , 12V power supplies are cheap.$450 for a classic? I just bought a new Fender blues Jr tube amp for $599.
@jonathansavell1832
@jonathansavell1832 4 жыл бұрын
They used to sell a kit with the board and components for about $44. I built one total cost less than $100, though it's in an ugly toolbox. It doesn't sound as good as the Milkman $1100 tube unit demoed I think by 60 Cycle Hum.
@AndreaAustoni
@AndreaAustoni 4 жыл бұрын
@@jonathansavell1832 Is the kit the same as the SurfyBear Classic? Cause that one is as close to a real tube tank as I've ever heard. At least with the kit you could buy high quality pots and switches and keep them off the PCB.

Generally is exactly the opposite, the SurfyBear is a bit darker. Maybe the Metal big one is a tiny bit brighter. I think the harsh sound comes from his amp configuration.

Gota love an effects pedal that also doubles as a pedal board while providing a useless effect as every amp since Jesus has it built in.

I'll humour you. Can you tell me an amp that has reverb that sounds the same as this?
@ushnicyuvnikof2748
@ushnicyuvnikof2748 2 жыл бұрын
@Fun House Baby It's just a Fender style spring reverb, even Surfy Bear Industries say so, quote " the Fender®-style spring reverb, has been finally revisited ". Fender spring reverb is just basic spring reverb, infact people upgrade the tanks all the time to make them sound better, Vox, Marshall and boutique brands can all run these upgraded tanks. It's just a spring reverb mate... Yea it's a big nice one but rack mounted spring reverb also exist. It's not all you're making it out to be. It's not the moon on a stick, it's not the 3rd coming of Christ - it's just a massive pedal that happens to have sweet drip. Stop trying it mate, just because you own one. It also doubles up as a weapon to fight off home invaders - oh what a slab.
@funhousebaby3104
@funhousebaby3104 2 жыл бұрын
@@ushnicyuvnikof2748 Mate I was genuinely interested, if you aren't big into reverb who cares so I don't blame you. I don't own one of these. My Fender Vibrolux has incredible reverb, but this has an extra 30%. Like you say dedicated tank/rack mounted units exist and are worth it considering the dedicated controls you don't get on an amp. But in my experience man, they mostly sound like shit. Whether it be old units/racks. The tanks are certainly different compared to the tanks in amps, mostly because of the extra gain stages and controls. PLUS they double up as weapons, so don't turn up to my gaff dissing reverb, or I'll hit you with it in a psych rock mushroom haze and put sideburns on your ankles 😉
