I don't think people realize how much damage water hammer can cause. In the middle of your street is a 6" to 24" water main (depending) on where you live. If a city employee shuts a valve too fast during a high demand hour, a freight train of water is stopped instantly and hammers every valve, connection and pipe sidewall. That's what this surge tank is relieving, water hammer

Surge tanks are applied in hydropower plants with long water conduits to reduce pressure forces during the acceleration of the large water masses. They are constructed as intermittent water reservoirs close to the turbines, either with open access to atmospheric air or as a closed volume filled with pressurized air.

For some reason Dams, hydroelectric and nuclear (when water is involved) scares me to death.... Which is REALLY weird (my father and mother were USMC/USN Corpsmen and we've always spent time on the water all over). I don't know if it's because of the water, the sensing of electricity or the two put together. My husband speculates that it might be the understanding that if things went to hell I am very well aware that there's little that can be done. Just don't know. I'm a big supporter of Hydro and nuclear power but it is terrifying. It's the only thing that can paralyze me in fear.... I'm a Field Medic work for a private company with government contracts, an 8 person team I'm the field medic and therefore also the safety officer (we do deep forest/mountain/Swamp, Search and Rescue/Recovery, assist with Wildland fire if needed and work a lot of Natural Disasters and occasionally the governing body we are contracted to will send us over as a kind of mutual-aid to help in Natural disasters in other areas) it's very hard to surprise, scare or gross me out. I had to use a line and harness to pull a kid out of the water above a dam once and while I'll do whatever I need to do anytime / anywhere to keep those I'm responsible for but it's hard, I've never been so terrified. Wish I knew why So I could have a better chance of fighting it. Thankfully the district I'm in is not exactly where these things are found. ***** If ANYONE has an idea/theory, I would really appreciate the ideas/suggestions to find out why and fight it!!!

sorry if this was already explained - Surge because of a turbine trip? and the momentum of the water has to go somewhere? I've seen this in the cooling systems with nuclear.
@telimarkskierman2 жыл бұрын
copied and pasted from OP below: "Yes, it was during the commissioning tests. A surge tank is basically a device that transforms kinetic energy into potential energy. There are no valves involved apart from the turbine wicket gates which cuts off the water flow in order to avoid sustained over speeds in the generators. The water in the penstock stops in about 9 seconds (wicket gate closing time) but stopping a 3,5 km tunnel in that time is impossible, you'd blow the penstock to pieces with the resulting overpressure. The surge tank is simply a tank connected to the main water line, ideally close to where the penstocks start, that allows the water flow to divert into it gaining level (potential energy) and "slowly" dissipating the kinetic energy of the water flowing through the tunnel. What you are seeing is the first and strongest level rise after the turbine trip. Once it reaches its peak, the flow in the tunnel will reverse as the excess of potential energy is converted back to kinetic. If the system is left alone, it will oscillate back and forth eventually dampening due to friction losses."

@gaspdahl1Ай бұрын
You won't need any ladder. This is a surge chamber. The water will change direction quickly, so if you fall in you will end up in the headrace tunnel below. Yes, you will meet the turbine but luckily, at that point you're already gonna be dead. Killed by high water pressure before entering the penstock at high speed. So don't go with the flow, stay out of this water must be the best advice.

Was this a test? What facility was this? Really cool and impressive stuff I just don't really have much of an idea of what's going on. When they close the valves I guess the pressure builds up and to prevent a blowout of the penstocks or valves the tank takes up the head pressure? Do you need to provide a diversion method before close in the valve so the tank can empty? The higher the tank, the faster it diverts out? I'm guessing the height of the tank is designed with a bunch of specific factors in mind but it does appear to get to the top very quickly!

Gumersindo Rico so as a brief summary, when high pressure water is stopped from a valve, that pressure that builds up from the Kinetic energy becomes dangerous, therefore rerouting to this tank so that it has somewhere to go.

Wish I knew why So I could have a better chance of fighting it. Thankfully the district I'm in is not exactly where these things are found. Edit: a bit more info to add... I was one of those children afraid of the bathtub drain and my parents tried to stop that issue but nothing really helped. My parents weren't the "give in and baby their child's fears" types and always did their best to avoid allowing fears to take us over but this never changed. I still find it very very unnerving to be in a public or unfamiliar bathroom and will jump away from pipes without meaning to if I hear/see something abnormal without meaning too. A very very old bare bathroom such as those in state/national Parks really does it too.... If there's already someone in there I'm uncomfortable but I'm okay; however, if there's no one in there (or the park is pretty much empty) I will start shaking and have many times had my husband (or when I was a child, a parent or my older sibling) stand outside the stall but in the bathroom and check the stalls before I'll go in. No one has ever forced me alone in there (even my mischievous older brother) and I think it's because they see/feel the fear radiating. My best friend pointed out once that bathroom sinks/tubs and toilets are just mini versions of those massive Dams, powerplants, etc..... And that's an excellent point. I love to swim and I fear little. I've had guns pointed at me, hit in the face with a rifle-butt, had to discharge my own pistol, swept out to sea by undertow and had to be rescued, almost bleed out twice, almost killed along with my late fiance, gave to face with wild animals and psychopathic humans.... NOTHING causes this level of fear in me like these structures do. ***** If ANYONE has an idea/theory, I would really appreciate the ideas/suggestions to find out why and fight it!!!

I'm scared of water when i can't see the bottom and i don't know why, i don't imagine monsters or anything, just an absurd yet strong fear that can sometimes prevent me from moving (dark water in tunnels is the worst for me). Others have a fear of submerged objects (submechanophobia or something). I suspect it's linked to a primal fear of water, some old instinct that our ancestors developed and that prevented them from drowning. I guess it takes weird shapes now because it's a very old instincts transposed to our modern world. (Like cats being scared of some vegetables because old instincts tell them it's shaped like snakes and snake bites are deadly). Interesting stuff imo.
