Yeah, pain has a purpose. It stops you from doing stuff your body isn't ready yet. So making it bearable, but still tangibly is making you able to do stuff (like this video), but stops you from running down the road and injuring yourself again / lengthening the time to recovery. (Yeah, I'm a fan of that approach)

And that is probably the reason why they prescribe opiods in the US. So that the worker bees can be back at their job stations in no time and no one misses work days because he is lying at home with moderate pain. Sickening.

As a Nurse here in Germany I can tell you one thing: We always ask our patient "Hey, how is your pain? Give me an number from 0 to 10 where 10 is like some kicked you right in your balls and 0 is oh, I just hit a lamp post". When someone really expresses that his pain is 5 or higher we ask any doctor to increase pain killers. But even then we want to give iburufen (including pantoprazole) or paracetamole or metamizole. After having a giant surgery which might include a Hip-Tep, we only want to give oxycodone 5mg for not longer than 3 days. Coz we want the body itself to get a feeling. And we also want patients to get out of their bed as soon as they have to. Otherwise there is a danger of thrombosis and pneumonia.

Yeah pain after surgery is temporary. There is absolute no reason to ruin lifes (getting an addiction), for a temporary pain problem. If you have a terminal illness, they start throwing opioids at you. An addiction at that point is your smallest concern. I am wondering if they are running studys with cannabis as additional pain medication. Ibuprofen for the pain and to avoid inflammations, cannabis to reduce the pain to more tolerable levels, depending on surgery.

5mg of Oxycodone for a hip replacement?? I've had doubld hip replacements and my first hip i was on 20 mg every four hours for two weeks! A year and a half later had my second hip replaced which was severely damaged from arthritis and they had to grind the joint down smooth. That time i got shots of fentanyl every four hours for the first five days then 30 mg of oxycodone for two weeks. Fuck surgery in Europe!!! I want no pain if i'm having major surgery!! And not an issue with addiction! But why should anyone be in that kind of pain especially with a joint replacement!!

Jap thats true, everybody has a different body and feels pain different. I was on Oxycodone for 3 days after an operation and then the nurse and I decided I go on Ibu&Paracetamole mix ... the pain got really bad again and I got one more dose of Oxycodone. After that my body healed enough so I could stop and continue with the Icu/Para mix. Its just so important to have a good nurse that knows how to read people xD I would not tell mine how my pain was but she found me crying from pain and steped in.

The funniest thing was when i had an open blisture on my foot and my American host family went like "You should put triple anti-biotic ointment on it" and I refused. I was the second German student they met to refuse it, because we are also trying to limit our usage of antibiotics to a minimum. Needless to say they were wondering why we are so scared of antibiotics. The reason for this is the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is a problem in German hospitals. America has a completely different approach to anything related to pain, germs and bacteria. You kill it all off while we try to maintain a reasonable level in order for it not to get out of hand.

There are risks in taking any medication - for example Novaminsulfon has a rare but very deadly adverse effect that kills you within minutes. Therefore, every prescription should be critically assessed and in some cases, the pain is better than the side effects.

Regarding that painkiller topic: In Germany, the general perception still is "the less chemical medicine, the better". When you have a the flu for example, a doctor will most likely tell you to drink water and tee. If you need to be ready to do something for work the next day and you actually tell your doctor, he then often decides to prescribe ibuprofen (or some other painkiller, but mostly ibu). (Remember: Ibuprofen comes in different variations. 400mg is freely accessible at a German pharmacy. 600+mg can only be purchased with a prescirption from a doctor. For a flu, my doctor prescribed me 2-3 times 400mg ibuprofen daily). When I had a sprained leg, the doctor prescribed me 3x 600mg. I recently read an article that 2400mg a day (in total) could potentially lead to a higher chance of problems with your heart. In Germany, that means: By no means should you ever (like never ever) get close to 2400mg a day (if said article is actually saying the truth). To cut a long story short: German regulations regarding medicine are mostly well done. A doctor usually doesn't give you more than you need to keep going. However, especially in your case Nalf, if your pain really becomes unbearable, go to a doctor and let him know you're in pain. He will most likely offer you something stronger (but still within the regulations of Germany's law, not even close to US standards). I see what you mean with enduring the pain, but by no means do you have to go through real hardships here. Doctors will first of all try it with less (cause less is better), but you are definitely not supposed to be in pain suffering. Maybe you told the doctor you still have ibuprofen at home, which is far weaker (maybe 400mg only) than what you were supposed to get? Definitely don't get the impression that you have to suffer pain here in Germany, if you feel uneasy, as I said above: Let your doctor know and he can sort you out.

The stuff you get prescription free can only go up to a certain level of concentration to make sure you can‘t harm yourself with the pills. Pain is important. It's a signal of how well you're healing. Doctors here want to know how you're actually feeling (in addition to taking an x-ray etc.) to gauge how much recovery time you still need, so you still need to be in a little pain. About the painkillers: Morphium etc is only used for major surgeries here or tumor pain etc. I had a mid-level surgery in January (got my nose corrected because it was so fucked up I couldn't breathe properly anymore), and stayed at the hospital for 4 nights. The first night they gave me intravenous Novalgin, which knocked me out good and took away all the pain, but after that it was only Ibu, so the pain was back. Novalgin was actually more comfortable so I can see why people would get addicted to stronger painkillers if they were Readily available. I am not a doctor but I reckon stronger painkillers than Ibu are only prescribed very reluctantly in Germany. They have better control on your consumption when in hospital though. Also my doctor once told me if you keep taking strong dosages of Ibu or even stronger painkillers for small things, then at some point your body won't react to them anymore. And that way you will keep needing stronger painkillers. So they try to keep it to a minimum so the weaker ones still work. The strongest dosage of Ibu you can get without a doctor's prescription here is 400mg.

Go for it! The feet...Well, we’re not that acquainted with them to judge (kinda weird, they’re just feet) but if they’re wrapped in Crocs...🤢

It's a cultural attitude, I'm fully American, but born in Austria. My last surgery, they gave me a prescription for Vicodin for post-surgery pain. Extra strength Tylenol worked fine. I never filled the prescription. Most would have filled the prescription and immediately started the Vicodin. I guess if it really started to hurt badly I would have, but always use over the counter if it's sufficient.

I've just discovered your channel, and this had to be one of the first videos for me to watch. I've been to Germany once (so far) and while in Munich, my appendix burst. I spent a week in a hospital where I learned that what little German I knew was not enough! The difference in the atmosphere in the hospital, the demeanor of the staff and the lack of English with most of the staff, made for an extra interesting tale of my European vacation.

I'm surprised, I'd have thought that every Doctor speaks English - it's the first foreign language at German schools. And the nurses would at least remember the basics. Then again, Munich ... Bavaria is known for a lot of things, but deeply felt interest in contact with strangers like, e.g. Proisn. (That's northern Germans.)

@NALF, I specifically watched this video to see if you would talk about pain medication. I had three surgeries in the last four months and I'm going to have a fourth surgery after 10 days. They are big surgeries so there is quite a lot of pain afterwards, but yes, all you get here is usually Ibuprofen, sometimes Novalminsulfon. No opioids whatsoever. When I see American friends or youtubers having a minor surgery and then being drugged up with opioids for the next couple of weeks, it always confuses me :D I usually get one Ibu 800 right after waking up from surgery, another one before going to sleep, and the next morning they give me two more to get me through the first day. That's it. No pain medication whatsoever after this. I obviously have Ibu400 at home but I usually don't feel the need to take it. I'm proud of you for enduring your pain ;) Get well soon!

The segment (which you also had on Instagram) that starts where you say "I'm still foggy from the drugs....", you should seal that in amber or a glass bottle, as a sort of time capsule and watch it again in, say 40 years from now. You'll see a younger version of yourself being forgetful and repeating himself...the just the way older Nalf will be doing at that point in his life. As for which foot is worse, definitely your regular foot. Your toes are absurdly long. Gute Besserung and sweet dreams.

Glad to hear that your surgery went well and you´re on the road to recovery. Big thumbs up for coach Neuman Please think about that also ibuprofen is not candy. Ibuprofen, Paracetamol and ASS are the standard pain meds here in germany... And yes, it is a real painkiller... The fact, that it doesnt work for you only means, that youre taking too much of it and get used to it ^^ The good stuff, the opiods you would only get in a pretty dire situation. For example, i work at an icu, and were using opiods to keep patients sedated....

Yea being able to speak at least 2 languages is very common here. At the high 3education school you can either choose to go the language route and learn English, Latin and Greek, or English Latin and French. Or you go the math/science route, where French is optional and you can only learn English. So pretty much everybody speaks English here.

Sometimes they give you more than just Ibuprofen. When i hurt my toe they gave me ibu and Novaminsulfon... that helps more than the regular ibuprofen. It also i guess makes a Bit difference whether you have ibu 400 or 800... so i don't Know what your ibu at home is. Anyway in Germany they only prescribe you as much as you seem to Need. So if you Act as if the pain isn't so bad, they'll just give you ibu and Let you suffer

The thing with hard painkillers is that stuff like opium is so highly addictive that there's a reasonable chance to be hooked on that stuff. Just like you said. So I'd rather have some bearable pain for 1 or 2 weeks than having a serious drug problem. You'll have to have some serious pain in order to have a doc prescribe you morphin or stuff like that. But I see where you're coming from

I share this perception of painkillers, Nalf. In fact, this also applies to Ibuprofen. Although it's not a strong opioid it's still medicine that can lead to unwanted side effects in the short or long run (regardless of this being rather unlikely). As for myself, I don't like taking them for small wounds or headaches. Obviously, if a strong headache or wound is preventing you from doing something there's a line where it's totally worth it to take stuff like Ibuprofen, but generally speaking, people need to learn to better cope with pain instead of just popping some pills. (Btw you can get Ibuprofen without prescription in Germany too. Only difference to the States is that it's not sold in supermarkets but only in pharmacies.)
