Girmitya I think is derived from the phrase " of the government " workers / labourers of the Government - who worked in sugarcane fields of Suriname. They were brought by the British government. Therefore they were workers of the government. They endured a lot of hardship and because they were not having so much education they ended up doing manual labour. It may be noted that whatever it may be the Girmityas never allowed their roots to be forgotten and they kept holding and practicing their culture and traditions alive. This gave the way to cultural diversity and expression in the fields of religion, day to day living and the arts. Baithak singing and chutney music became a great part of the descendants of the Girmityas. Baithak singing, Chutney Music are genres in their own right and can't be compared to Indian music or Caribbean music. Thus the Girmityas and their culture and traditions have a place in the culture and traditions of Suriname.
