Bro you have to make more vids, but this one never gets old.. 2nd week with new ICT and l love the pace of this bike.. Not the fastest but not slow and eats up miles.. climbing is a joy with this bike, no problem with all that grip in a stout rigid frame.. Fat tires was pumped up max from the shop and l have not messed with them making the ride fast, still have plenty tire.. And has not loss any air so far, solid as a rock

Another great video. I have a Mukluk and a Felt DD30. Love them toooo much. For a trip like what you just did i normally run about 3.5psi in the front and 5.5psi in the rear for 4.8 tyres. 3.5 in the front gives about 75mm of tyre compression. I can hit rough tracks fast with this pressure and the grip is mega. While 5.5 out the back is a good balance between speed and comfort. When money allows i will get a Mastodon fork. But running rigid bikes make one learn bike handling.

Yeah for sure having big volume tires gives a lot of options just with tire pressure, it does require a bit of trial and error once you’re in the conditions to see how it’s riding. A suspension fork is on my future list, but going to focus on some bikepacking with the ICT first. Thanks for watching!!

Glad you were realistic about the rigid fatbike not being the super comfy machine that many people imagine ( when descending rough/rocky terrain ) I myself was surprised how without a sus fork you still get shaken and jolted to pieces even with low pressure due to the lack of tyres having any rebound damping . Easy to feel completely out of control!
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend Жыл бұрын
Yeah it won’t outperform a high quality bigger travel bike for sure, it does better when compared to a hard tail or maybe low travel XC full suspension bike descending. Even then it can be pretty rough. I will say it does out perform on the ups due to the better traction and stability at low speeds.
@bill7853
@bill7853 Жыл бұрын
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks for replying ..I'm surprised to be honest ..I would have imagined most hardtails with even 100mm travel would be more controllable and comfy at speed on those rocky descents ...but I guess you should know ! It's the bouncing off everything I'm not keen on which ..when in rapid succession gets unnerving . I guess dropping the tyre pressures (as low as still allows steering and stability )can help to reduce the uncontrolled rebound . I always find it strange not many mention this about fatbikes and you hear quotes like " can steamroller through anything " but you never see a video of anyone doing it at speed on a rigid ! I've been riding allsorts of 2 wheelers for 55yrs but fairly new to these monsters and it's kind of love/hate at the moment . I really do love 29plus rigid with 3.25 tyres and tbh can do a lot on that with more control but less traction of course. Could you add a redshift suspension stem for a future review to see if it helps perhaps .....or if money allows even some fastflex bars ! A good sus fork would make all the difference on the ICT but kind of spoil the rigid simplicity IMHO. Oh ..just remembered ..a guy in the UK did do a video that I said didn't exist ..He seems to do well ..if you're interested and have a few minutes kzbin.info/www/bejne/r32kpKSgfb-VZpI Beautiful place you live in and thanks for the footage . Just out of curiosity, does the altitude affect the optimal level of air pressure in your tires? Another great vid. Thanks for sharing.
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It was a fun test for myself and the bike! The air pressure in the tire actually gets higher when going up, which seems counter intuitive. But for a ride like this it was not all that noticeable. Usually as you go up in this kind of elevation the air temperature drops quite a bit, which can help offset the altitude impacts.

Very good riding, i have a mongoose fat tire bike 14 speed,and a 4hp motorized engine on it. and it performs well. That is such a different part of the universe than the East Coast where we have lots of short steep climbs and descents. Here, it's all sorts of ups and downs rather than a giant climb with a giant descent. That being said, we might have to do over 10k of climbing to attain 2k of elevation.

I'm about to buy a Surly and I'm torn between the Ice Cream Truck and Karate Monkey. This will be my all year commuter/mountain bike. Does the ICT have a significant difference in rolling resistance because of the fat tires on Non-Winter riding? Basically, I'm just worried if the ICT would be too much bike for me. Also the shop near me has them both with the Sram Eagle 1x12 drivetrain.
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 4 жыл бұрын
Jonathan DeLeon Guerrero I haven’t ridden the KM, but it would be a much more nimble bike for commuting, especially if pavement is involved. If you want to do some legit fatbiking in the snow, the ICT is ideal. Another option is to get the ICT, and get a 29+ wheelset for commuting. I gravel grind and dirt road ride the ICT with the stock aggressive tires all the time and it’s not bad set up tubeless, but definitely more rolling resistance then a KM. Thanks for stopping by!!

@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
Technically this bike is fully rigid, but if you mean something like a hard tail 29er, then I can say it would have been much less capable traction wise, and much more uncomfortable. I have used my 29er (with 120mm suspension up front) in this area before and I would not prefer it to the ICT for extreme terrain. I have run this same trail on my full suspension bike (120mm/110mm), and it was a little better on the descent at speed with the active suspension, but not as good on the climb and didn’t feel as stable. @ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
All of the above actually. I was comparing the ICT to the Pugsley, and obviously much more factors than just thru axle makes it feel better in aggressive terrain, but I think it’s a part. And yes definitely more confidence inspiring on a long, steep, chunky descent like that. I don’t think that there’s any question mechanically speaking that thru axle design is superior to the QR, just as a matter of physics. Thanks for watching!

@@ElevationEveryWeekend I disagree that it has any benefit other than cosmetic pleasing and obsoleting a prior design, but not interested in counting contact points from the outer bearing race - I am more fat bike curious and want to know what are the ride differences between the ICT and the Wednesday?
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
@@bimmerbent the ICT is slightly slacker and has a wider rear spacing (197mm to 177mm for Wednesday). As a result it’s not as nimble and the Wednesday is a bit lighter. Hard to compare apples to apples because the ICT has much larger tires, so it has the benefits (and detriments) of that. I can recommend either bike, if you want Max tire type riding then definitely the ICT, if you’re leaning towards smaller tires then go for the Wednesday. They basically do all of the same things, but each slightly better than the other factoring tire size and riding preferences.
@ElevationEveryWeekend
@ElevationEveryWeekend 3 жыл бұрын
As for the QR vs Thru axle, you’ll have to debate that with the bike industry at an engineering level. 😂 Personally, I will always prefer the larger thru axle tube vs the QR rod, and having it thread directly into the frame vs operating on the clamping pressure of the QR.🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t mention them intentionally, because they are so variable. The PSI I run, in my specific tires, my body weight, my elevation, temperature and terrain is pretty much meaningless to you or anyone else unless the same conditions apply. It will even vary from ride to ride for me, so again not relevant to put a number on. It’s best to experiment for your own uses.
