I hope you tied the coop down really good so no bears can push it over for a midnight snack!
@tylerbarrett6652 Жыл бұрын
I'd be worried about a strong wind/storm blowing that coop over. I hope you were able to anchor it into the ground somehow... Seriously, Wild Wonderful Off Grid in WV built a coop using a very heavy flatbed trailer as a base, and it blew over in a freak storm. Yours looks so much less substantial... tho very cool... and I hope you take some time to think out how it will fare in a heavy wind/storm and what you can do to prevent it. Trying to be helpful... love your journey and I'm so glad you upload it and share it with us.
@katee2231 Жыл бұрын
I live in AR and have a style coop like that. I have tied on each end strong string around the end poles and run through cinder blocks and we had 60-70 mile hour wind and it remained grounded without any movement.
@tylerbarrett6652 Жыл бұрын
@@katee2231 - Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about..... lol. Yeah... it needs anchored down. Glad to see you came up with something that works for you... I hope they do too.

It might be a good idea to stake it down because a hard rain or strong wind will blow the coop away.

I have my coop like that and live here in SW AR. Suggestion: Please get a tarp for over it when our winds and storms are crazy. You will get water inside. Also, attach cinder blocks with a strong string to your coop both back and front. That metal pan will rust a hole through from there urine. I put a thin rubber mat on it. Because the ground get soggy pine pellets work good in there ground run. I use pine shavings inside the coop and in winter make a thick covering inside to help keep them warm. I learned a lot the hard way for our windy, wet, cold area. One 40-60 mile an hr wind and without anchoring it will not be good and seriously a tarp is extremely necessary when it rains or snows. Good luck! Raising chickens is the best! Abe, you will love your Blackie. Good you got straw, we in our area couldn’t find it here till last week. Happy for you.

I had one of these only lasted few years before started falling apart. But was good for my little pair of silky. But sadly raccoons got in they got through the wire. I recommend putting motion light on it to help scar them off.
@shirlymullis1699 Жыл бұрын
You might need to put another fenced in yard around the little coop so they won't accidentally get out when the door is opened or not closed good by one of the little ones.

I absolutely love how the kids climbed into the coop and they were holding the chickens. Abe's face with the black one when he held it and smiled big and announced this one is mine. That is a really nice coop. I wondered how many chickens they reccomend for that coop.

They recommend 8-10 But we're stuffing 12 in there easily ☺️

Get some "Hog Wire" to lay around the outside of the coop. This will help protect the chickens from predators that dig under the sides of the coop. (Ref: Life Elevated, they just lost most of their flock.)

@2012nowornever Жыл бұрын
I notice a few good suggestions here such as set up a motion sensor light. solar powered would be good. Also someone mentioned that you should anchor the coop to the ground. That is a good idea also.

When y'all get y'all's chickens. Y'all can use the chicken manure in your gardens. Remember to let the chicken let the chicken manure dry first then you can mix it into your soil chicken manure is a great source of organic fertilizing. Chicken manure hats nitrogen it has potassium it has calcium which is the nutrients that your plants needs. Now the reason why I say let your chicken manure dry is because the white spot that's in the center of the chicken manure is ammonia and ammonia will burn up your plants if you put the manure around your plants when it's wet. Like right now you don't have plants in your garden you can put the wet Chicken in your in there right now but however after you get done planning your seeds and your plants then you want to let them in your dry first. Also I know that y'all was talking about getting rabbits you can also use the rabbit manure in your garden and again like the chicken manure you want to let your rabbit manure dry. And another thing that you can do with both of them and yours the chicken and the rabbit manure is you could put it into a compost bin and turning into some great compost to put in your garden.
@lindamaskus5142 Жыл бұрын
Only chicken manure needs to set so it doesn't burn your plants. Rabbit manure can be used immediately! It isn't like chicken manure. Two totally different manures.

That's a nice little starter coop. I like that the run is tall enough for you and the kids to go inside. I was given a little coop at one time. It was fine while the flock was young. So I used it as a grow out coop. I think that you will find that having a taller and larger coop and run when the flock is mature will be an asset. Be sure to use something around the bottom to protect from predators digging under. Having all your dogs and cats will also deter predators. You may also want to put a rain fly over the run during the rainy season. Mud isn't nice for them to stand in. I always had mixed flocks. Love the variety of egg colors. I had an Easter egger that laid a pinkish egg, but most lay pale blue or green eggs.

Congrats on getting the chickens the kids will have some fun with those and not long until the first eggs what an exciting time that will be Because it’s a smaller coop I’d have a tarp ready for when you have big rains and cover the run just so they aren’t stuck in the mud to much or cover top and side from the direction your main rains come from tell the kids great building job it looks amazing 🐓

You should maybe build a roof over the chicken coop and also pick up a electric fence surrounding the coop. Otherwise you can count on racoons and other predators will definitely get into the coop and believe me they will ALL die. I grew up on a farm and these things happen when you don't plan ahead

Yeah it looks very flimsy for a wilderness coop. I hope I'm wrong but a good electric fence as mentioned would be a great idea and make sure you Bury it quite deep.

Love Chickens, best livestock animal period. A little warning, that even though that coop is sponsored, it will not protect those chickens from predators as the wire around it isn’t near strong enough. You should look at immediately adding hardware cloth around the inside of the run and lower areas of the wire as well as adding some around the outside at the bottom to prevent digging underneath. Trust me on this before it becomes a disaster especially where you live now (as there are plenty of predators around)
@margaretcooke7016 Жыл бұрын

Our landlady's husband has a chicken coop and in there experience they built another larger area for them to roam around. The outside fence they dug down two to three feet and turned the fence outward at bottom like an l shape. This keeps foxes and coyotes out from digging under the fence. And above the fence we put both wired fence and netting to keep the chicken hawks and predator birds and raccoons out from getting over the top so far amazing success. Every once in awhile he throws raked up leaves in their. The birds sift through them eating all the insects getting their much needed proteins for good healthy eggs. Don't forget heat lamps and windshield plastic to keep them warm during cold nights. Also wrap that heated coil wire around the water bowls to keep it from freezing.

The one thing I do recommend, is doing deep litter method. I used it with my birds and it made great fertilizer for the garden. I put 3 truck loads of saw mill chips under the birds in the coop and yard and changed it every 6 months. It kept the coop smelling good and the flies down too. It gave the birds a lot of scratching to do, and the saw dust attracted a lot of worms that the birds loved. I put a kiddy pool in yard for the duck and all the birds drank from it and it helped break down the saw dust so it saw better for the garden afterwards. Looking forwards to your adventure with your birds. Hope you try ducks, they are funny to watch.

give the chickens some shade in the hottest part of summer and lots of water. in the summer, stay away from cracked corn as it will raise their internal temp. on the flip side, supplement with it in the winter to help with keeping them warm. If we get another artic freeze wouldn't hurt to throw a tarp over the coop at night and uncover them during the day. this is our 4th year with chickens in arkansas, reach out if you have any questions.

For the feed get big 4" pcv pipes and a cap for top. Think of a big "J" shape. The top of the J you put a removal threaded cap this is where you pour the feed into the bottom of the J hooks inside the chicken coop wall. It works great last a long while and no other critters can get to the feed except the chickens. Gravity allows the feed to fall down and settle to the bottom of the J hook. The birds feed out of it like a dish.

I found a post on Facebook recommending all sorts of books on homesteading listed on Amazon. I have a better idea, join the local library. Mine in Dayton must include 15 different branches. Any thing I find if it available will be shipped free of charge to any branch I choose! Some Audio books are downloadable, or you can check out the discs! Now the reason I mention all of this, is what better state to have a library full of books on Homesteading, than Arkansas! Amazon had 50 pages of books on Homesteading! Covering everything from canning, gardening, recipes, becoming self-sufficient! You guys were talking about one day building a greenhouse. I even saw books on hydroponics! Lots of topics to work on on the weekend after building your cabin Monday through Friday. Teaching the kids and maybe get them a starter plot going! Fruit trees for Apples, Peaches, Cherries, and Plums. Then canning and making jellies on the weekend. How proud do you think they would to give gifts at Christmas of their can goods to family? Get back to work! lol
