The refusal of companies to sell smaller size vehicles in the US is baffling. As someone who I looking to get an EV in the next year it’s a slap in the face to see this force feeding of giant vehicles in the US. with the chevy bolt being eliminated as well in 2024 the small size market has almost no options. For context I live in a city and seldom drive others so not interested in backseat space. just need a small car for light driving and errands.

refusal?? companies keep losing money on small car sales, since the sales figures are too low for them to make a profit... so why would they keep producing them? the chevy bolt has been selling well lately, since it's ridiculously low priced..... You really think, they are making a profit on the bolt ? Why do you think they're discontinuing it? Ford is struggling to build EVs, or anything affordable or without recalls for that matter. And Volkswagon's EV demands is EU is flatlining. So this isn't too surprising. Although only highlights the issues the automakers are having.

It's doesn't surprise me, Ford and VW have a history of collaboration in Europe. Ford is also developing and building a VW Amarok successor for both companies.. And if I'm recall Ford were also going to build vans for VW based around their Transit platform. And both companies are investing in Argo AI.

It's named Explorer EV because we also have the US Explorer as an PHEV. It will be build in Köln (Cologne) where Ford has it's european HQ since 1925. Other new corporations between Ford and VW is the new Ford Tourneo Connect which is based on the VW Caddy and the new VW Amarok which is based on the new Ranger and build by Ford in Southafrica.

I would buy one in the US. I don't need a bus with 3 rows of seats. US vehicles are getting too large.. I like this size as long as it doesn't cost 60,000 dollars...

I suspect this is about tariffs as much as anything. If Ford's European EVs are built locally, they can be a lot more price competitive vs being treated as an import.

It's the standard 10% tariff. Ford did not want to develop new cars for Europe due to cost cutting. They tried to sell the US models as the Edge and still sells the Explorer but priced it above a Volvo XC90 and BMW X5. This is a way to keep presence for the meanwhile. Ford was a big player but is loosing ground fast as the knowlegde of product development and pricing is lost.

The problem is that some of their manufacturing plants are in the UK and Brexit has happened. So it is not easy to create a whole independent supply chain for both markets (UK and EU) without massive investment.

The UK and Brexit is its own chapter. Ford of Europe does not have much left in the UK, car production ended in 2013. We discussed Ford of Europe vs. Ford of US on each others turfs.

Ford just doesn't have the economies of scale in Europe, it makes more sense to base everything off the Volkswagen platform... Poor Brexitland is going to lose all of its remaining manufacturing....

Good for VW... especially as ID3/4 are seeing 30%+ decline in sales. VW is lucky that Ford will rebrand it... at least until customers will realize it's as bad as the ID.4 (compared to other similarly priced EVs 🤦‍♂)

VW and Ford have teamed up in the past in Europe. The VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy minivan were joint venture twins back around 2000 or so. I worked in London at the time and when an American colleague and his English wife had a baby they bought the third variant, a SEAT Alhambra. These vehicles were truly exceptional in the way that they all managed to be so profoundly unexceptional.

Ford Authority has said the next generation Escape will be a BEV. Maybe the HEV and PHEV will be continued also. Ford will need something to compete with the GM Equinox BEV.

I will never buy Ford car. Endless recall experience of Ford Ranger from Australian owner. Unrealiable, overpriced, and overated brands. Japanese and chinese brands have much better design with geneous interior with Auto pilot high end functions😊 Such as NIO, BYD, GWM, Toyota & Hyundai.

Ford spent 400 million to form the Edsel division. $1,000,000 in 1958 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $10,623,737.02 today (which may be a calculation from 2013). So multiply that by 400, and in today's dollars (or 2013 dollars) 4,249,494,808 we can round off to 4 billion 250 million dollars, which is what Ford would have spent on the Edsel in this century. Ford has actually lost 4.5 billion on EV development, more money in today's dollars than they spent on the Edsel division.

This Explorer exterior styling is a little too bland for me to be interested in it. It’s got the personality of a generic suv toaster. Take the ford badge off of it and it looks like virtually every other 5 door wagon on the market. With Alex standing next to it, I am thinking this is more of an old Ford Escort/Ford Fiesta wagon sized car. I drove by a VW dealership a few days ago. And I saw absolutely nothing on their lot with a VW badge on it that looked remotely interesting. It was right next to the Kia dealership, and the Kia store had a LOT of really cool great looking vehicles on the lot. Kia was killing it, VW was phoning it in as an afterthought. No wonder Kia is selling a lot of vehicles and VW is it. Based on the new family vehicles I see running around in my town, shiny new Kia’s are everywhere and VW? What VW?

Friend placed $500 for a Base Ford Lightning. Still on the wait list 2yrs later. Dealer recently mentioned Ford not interested in making or selling Base models. Prefer to sell XLT or higher. Why would the Explorer be any different?
