The frunk is highly overrated and the overwhelming majority of people who have an EV with one never actually use it. In the Mach-E for example you can only fit one carry on bag & it barely fits a normal size gym bag and even then you have to lay it on its side. Also, if you have some of those grocery bags that are square and have hard sides they won't fit at all so their frunk is basically relegated to being just a cool party trick that you can fill up with ice and drinks. What's more concerning is that for that price you can get a Model Y Performance and add the enhanced auto piolit for the same price. You can also get the Mach-E GT which is their top trim for roughly the same price. GM is grossly overshooting the price.

Never not once even at Costco have I ever seen anyone loading their groceries in the frunk which is an everyday use case scenario. The RWD actually has more power than the eAWD model. But also has more range because of the larger battery pack. I never understood it. They didn't develope the battery chemistry. The only way to make an EV cheap is to spec a smaller pack. For a smaller pack, make a smaller car. We don't so small cars here.
@Tokamak3.1415 Жыл бұрын
@@mtnman1984 GM did develop the battery chemistry for Ultium. This design uses modular packs and they relay data with wireless signaling to the BMS. You can make a pack cheaper by taking out the more expensive elements like NMC but each of those adds some useful properties to the energy density of the cell or stability in preventing fires, higher charge speeds and so forth. If they went with a LiFePO4 battery it would be $5k cheaper but would have less range. Those 21" wheels aren't helping the issue.
@mtnman1984 Жыл бұрын
@@Tokamak3.1415 good information, but GM partnered with LG Chem who manufactures the cells. I don't understand why they didn't advance the standard with the voltages of the packs. I understand they can series/parallel switch in the larger packs, but all anyone cares about is how fast you can get juice into the battery. With 400V, owners will run into amperage limitations on a pretty constant basis. And, yeah, the 21s don't help. Neither does the size of the vehicle. I'm surprised that it doesn't stand out more with its specs, considering the hype around Ultium. It's great that it scales across the product portfolio, but, meh.
@Tokamak3.1415 Жыл бұрын
@@mtnman1984 GM will actually be doing the manufacturing. LG will be providing the battery making equipment inside the GM owned building - similar setup to how Tesla and Panasonic are. 400V vs 480V, 560V or 800V is often brought up as a simple numbers game. I work on batteries as my 2nd job. The problem with going to higher voltages is it requires very high endurance voltage equipment that can handle said abuse. Lucid can afford to put them in its cars. Hyundai has put them in and now is having issues with their ICCUs failing left and right. On a large battery like a Hummer it makes sense to demand 600+ volt systems. Not so much on the smaller packs. Probably equally important would be to get the voltage up on the main bus so the archaic 12V system can be upgraded. Rivians are having problems losing 3% charge per day due to sleep state issues. For people who aren't road tripping every week fixing improper sleep states and phantom drains and standby power use is more important than saving 2 minutes at a charging station.

Thanks Andre, Not digging the reliance on screens to change things especially if it is common access things. Seems pretty odd to have such a large front hood and there is no frunk space in there. Seems like GM rushed the design. I like the look. It is pretty heavy and it's range isn't great. That price is pretty bad. It is almost as if this is the first time GM has made an EV looking at this. Oh and GM doing away with carplay and android auto is just bad. That charging door is bad design. There are other choices in the market for sure that I would choose over the Blazer EV for sure. $60K for the RS. The big question is what the price for the 2LT will be. As a comparison, the ICE Blazer 2LT runs $36,800, while the ICE Blazer RS is $$44,200. A split like that would put the 2LT Blazer around $50k, and perhaps less for the 2WD model.

Nope, this is a huge let down, any manufacturer that dumps android auto and apple carplay will not get my business. This is a cash grab and GM is really starting to piss me off with this subscription based features. I want to purchase an automobile and it just has the features it has. I want reliability, I want a strong warranty that actually covers the car and is not full of BS that gets the manufacturer out of paying for repairs, and I want good standard features. The fact that this one as tested is $60,000, has substandard range, and overall is nothing special just pushes me further away from GM. I have been a lifelong GM owner. I am guessing GM figures the high price will mean GM will get more of the money per unit versus the dealers which been just marking up everything to insane levels. Why should GM offer a lower retail when the dealer is just going to charge so much more? Then consider GM is probably taking a loss on every EV they sell, so selling less, means less loss in the short haul. If they ever hope to make the transition to EVs, they are going to have to hit high volume to turn a profit at some point. Consumers who do a small amount of research are going to find many more appealing options. It will the GM loyalists making up the bulk of the buyers for this unless the price changes dramatically.
@samatwesu Жыл бұрын
Good point! I did not think of this. But this would insure markups would be low if dealers hope to move this EV.
@kevtheobald Жыл бұрын
From what we have seen so far, most dealers are not excited about selling EVs. They believe they can get someone coming for an EV to go ICE instead. Keeping the lower service revenue EV models out of the market and selling in the higher service costs models in the market, keeps dealers smiling. If EVs truly need 10% as much service, those large service centers that generate big profits, suddenly see their business demand drop. @@samatwesu

Yup -- had a Blazer EV reservation, I cancelled it soon as I found out they were ditching Android Auto/CarPlay and moving everything to "integrated to the car" setup. The fact it costs $60k is only the first part of the laugh, there are stories of many dealers marking them up 5-10k. So you have dealers trying to sell this thing for $70k? HAH. The same range/performance from Tesla is $45k, you can get a fully optioned up Model Y *performance* with tow hitch, and the $6k autopilot option and it would still be cheaper than this. GM could have had a hit on their hand, but in usual GM fashion they screwed themselves over. Later on I'm sure they will say the same thing they always do "consumers didn't want EV"s", which is BS. I enjoy my 22' Bolt EUV, and wanted to upgrade, not to that overpriced turd of a Blazer EV though. Seems the best advertising for Tesla is GM currently.

Honestly how often do you road trip & when you do how often is it that you go more than 300 miles. I understand if you are commonly going from say NY to Florida several times a year than that would be a concern. However if you are like the overwhelming majority of people who's road trips are 283 & miles or less and maybe once a year at most then the road tripping aspect is grossly overblown. Also, even if you bought a CCS EV now with the exception of VW all the automakers are switching to NACS early next year which is just a couple of months away & you can get an adapter. If you just don't want an EV or the cost of the Blazer is too prohibitive I get it & I'm not trying to change your mind but those sound more like excuses than valid concerns.
