Bentonite and clay 100%. The warranty sounds good but with the clay and bentonite there’s better natural filtration for the water, it will be easier and less stress for putting in structure and don’t have to worry about getting snags or tear every so often in the liner. Companies can claim there will be no toxicity from the liner but there has to be some sort of it after so many years of still sitting water.

They can just cover the liner with sand/ rocks/ gravel. That will help prevent the chances of snagging it while fishing and putting a rip in it.

If you line it, you'll want to cover the lining - preferably with rocks, gravel, etc. that will hold the liner down (stop if floating up), and will protect it for life. You will need a lot of rock/stone, but it will make a natural looking pond. I made one like this on my channel....I would still go with the clay and bentonite though. You'll do it right, and you won't scrimp on cost, and it will be a much better product long term. Just don't cut any corners while you do it.

I think the weight of the water would hold the liner in place, wouldn't it? I guess the company would know how/what to do. The one benefit of using the liner over the bentonite/clay is that if it does start to leak, someone who knows what they're doing will come and repair it, which I bet would involve learning where the leak is, etc. For the record, my initial vote was for the bentonite and clay too, but there were a few tidbits (like them coming to repair it for 25 years) that we didn't know last time. That's a pretty big perk in the long run. Plus after many years, even if he decided to remove the liner one day, I'd like to think that with the weight of the water on the soil, etc. may have helped compact the soil underneath to help seal it? I dunno, I'm just thinking out loud, haha.

Glad to see everyone form a united front for Clay and Bentonite. The natural way is definitley the way to go. There is no guarantee that a company will adhere to it's own warranty anyway, as usual most will try to find anything they can to either deny coverage at the point of issue, or, outright void it. And of course, warranties are limited in terms of time. Plus, there really is more overall cons and potential issues with liners than natural use of bentonite. The pond will also be far healthier and more balanced in ecosystem in the long haul if it's kept natural. Over time the ecosystem in it will find a equilibrium meaning maintenance will become minimized. So Clay and Bentonite all the way! Even if it costs more overall in the beginning, it will be more than worth it years down the road.

Just my 2 cents worth is eventually you will need to dredge the pond out in certain areas to keep your depth you want and if you put a liner you risk having to have a whole new liner every time you dredge an area. In my opinion a liner would be more of a pain then bentite

Natural ponds are way better, liners are fine but you have muskrats, snapping turtles that will damage the liner. Rotting material will create methane pockets that will create Big pimples in the liner and they will eventually pop and it sucks when it's in the middle of the pond. My suggestion is spend on extra bentonite and re-layer with dirt and sheeps foot the crap out of it. I've done many ponds and for the most part, the ones that did put in liners aren't over whelmingly happy with the out come... Clay is the ticket but it is pretty expensive ...just my 2 cents

I’m on the clay and bentonite train. If I heard correctly one of those ponds was packed tightly with all sorts of equipment. While the other one that leaks wasn’t packed as tightly.

I’m for the Bentonite and Clay. Just something about it being more natural than a thick liner. Do these liners expand and contract with the different temperatures? Considering where you’re at you have a pretty wide range of temperatures….especially in the winter. Just a thought.

4 ponds is a tiny sample, so banjo and jake saying 100% of the liner ponds don't leak and 50% of the clay ponds leak doesnt really mean anything especially since it sounds like the clay pond that leaks could have neen made to not leak if the right steps were taken. I dont have any experience or data to support one or the other but i just cant get on board with putting a huge piece of plastic or rubber or whatever in the ground to make a pond. Maybe the liner will last a long time but maybe it wont and if it doesn't, its going to be a major PITA to dig out and replace or even just dig out and dispose of if you don't want it anymore. Sure, you can apparently repair a liner but you can also repair a clay lined pond. The earth has enough trash and plastic buried in it without us intentionally adding to it.

Clay and bentonite, based on the other ponds sounds pretty straight forward that clay and bentonite would be fool proof considering both has little to no leaks without clay and the one that doesn't leak was even mixed with the same soil your working with, seems obvious to go with something that's easier for you to add structure too without the stress of it causing a leak later on and having to find it

I'm a fellow Nebraskan in eastern Saline county. I have a roughly 2 acre pond on my 40 acre square and although mine was an old pond that we dug out and always held water, after we dug it out to increase and expand we did spread a few trailer loads of vermiculite, yes vermiculite, and we just drove on it with our trucks to pack it in (cause we did that after all the big equipment was gone or wed have had them track in it with their dozer). You have to keep in mind that once there is water in there and the soil becomes conditioned to holding water (could take some time) it will also silt in and add to the whole sealing effect naturally... Also should you go the Bentonite method you can slurry or float vermiculite to help seal leaks, it will float at first but once it becomes water logged it will sink and naturally settle where any leaks may show up. In short, natural ponds all the way.!..

Flair you should do bentonite. Then if you decide you want to tweak little things like expand a shelf or have a spawning gulf you can add soil to it without having to peel back the liner and stuff dirt under it.

Bentenite, Clay, and big roller for sure!!! I have seen pond dams where a muskrat dug out around the overflow tube and started leaking and was definitely fixed with just bentenite and have had no issues since!!! Now if you have a liner and an animal pokes holes in it is it still covered under warranty or not??? I definitely say bentenite and clay and make it at least 15’ to 20’ deep and you won’t have any issues!!! I did say something about the more water would help put more weight down helping it to not leak way back in one of your first videos!!! The pond guy I no had told me about that and with the bentenite and clay packed in and being deep enough that he would definitely guarantee it to not leak but it would have to be with the correct clay also!!

I think the bentonite is the way to go. I think its way more natural and it sounds like if you do it professionally it will be foolproof. Think about the pond in 30 years I have a feeling the rubber will wear out and by then it will be out of warranty. The bentonite will create a better environment for fishing, boating, and just messing around on it.

Yeah...liners have more limitations. I use to build pools and ponds for exotic animal enclosures and I seen it all. The only way I would use a liner is if it was a concrete pool/pond and those are not even rubber...its more like epoxy/resin that is sprayed on.

Drive a small sheepsfoot roller in that thing, play a little nascar and go around and around. Doensnt need to be perfect, its just preparation. Bring in bentonite and clay, mix it with bottom soil and play nascar again with a bigger sheepsfoot roller. That thing will never leak, simple to do, Beefcake construction can even do it.

Personally I would go with clay and betonite, pack it properly. Then add the contouring and Islands etc. you can also add natural vegetation to help with oxygenation etc.

Clay and bentonite is better for farm ponds and lasts forever. Rubber liners are better for garden ponds, but don’t last as long like 10- 20 years. In my opinion I would go with the bentonite and clay or just bentonite.

The thing with a liner is that once you seal the bottom it acts like an aquarium. You have to run bubbles to keep the surface moving for gas exchange. If you don't gas will build up from waste and you'll have a fish kill. Plus no ice fishing. Natural is better is everyway.

I’d do bentonite and clay make sure you do it right. I’d also make your pond deeper so you have more fish species opportunities that you can stock. Liners can have many issues with natural wildlife such as muskrats, snapping turtles, and possibly catfish.

If you get a hole in a clay and bentonite bottom, you can add a few bags of bentonite near the leak, and the bentonite will flow towards the leak and expand and seal in the leak. So it can last a lifetime

I am not an expert by any means but after some quick research I say the bentonite or the clay and bentonite method. If your pond is currently not holding water… you are solely relying on that liner. Although it may be under warranty for 25 years, if there is an issue with the liner in a deep part you are going to have to drain the entire pond and start the whole thing over again. Let’s say you go 7-9 years with no issue and have 10-16 pound bass in there and the liner rips or a muskrat rips through it… all those years are gone. Your pond is going to end up looking exactly how it is currently. Making it as natural as possible reduces the risk and fixing an issue may be more expensive but it doesn’t wipe out all of your years of growing those fish. Just my thoughts.

I'm with most on the bentonite train mainly because of having watched the last few years of pond "antics".... the structure adding, random challenges that would make osha faint and the possibility of a random stray from a hunt or target practice not to mention hooks or fish with teeth going after prey on the bottom

Two things water greatly slows down projectiles and the earth and gravel on top of the liner will protect it as well. There is a mesh shield that you can get seeded with wire that will protect the pond from most things. The only real difference is margin of error, clay ect has a large margin for error compared to a liner. What people don't seem to understand is you can pack stuff on top of a liner to keep it natural and safe, in fact it's hardier than without.

Bentonite to work properly needs to be worked into existing soil such as tilled then compacted with sheep foot roller. If doing clay lined only it needs to be at least 2’ deep and sheep foot rolled. It’ll be good to go! Liner you have no vegetation growing. I like more natural looking pond bottoms

Just a quick note, you can get Bentonite rolls that are made out of Bentonite and sandwiched in between rolls of fiberglass woven material so you roll it down like a pond liner then you cover it up with sand you can do anything you want with it we use it on the landfills to keep water in its place once it's down it lasts forever

Both will hold water and can be installed on large ponds. The difference is that Bentonite can self-heal and expand around the small gaps and crevices in the soil, meaning that you don't need to worry if the machinery runs over the liner or plants and roots pierce the pond bottom

Nature made is best. Like others are saying a liner company will try anything not to fix or replace on their dollar even if you have a warranty they will find a loop hole out and you will be screwed. We did a liner on a 2 acre pound and 8 years end the company went under and we had to drain the pond pull out the liner and start over. Looking back and talking to pond builders and owners of ponds we where told to fill it up and see what happenes. So we add bentonite and filled her up she held water. We did have to add water the first two years but then everything settled in and Kurdish where much happier in a natural pond I like to say they are! Good luck on your decision!

Have a lawyer look into the fine details of the warranty. They always have exceptions to there warranty about installation and such. That could really help in your decision making process. I would also add that you could bentonite parts of the pond first. Say measure the pond for a couple weeks if you haven't already and see where the water stays. Then bentonite up a couple feet and see if it holds. You may just have a section that isn't holding or area.

Also , liners will eventually degrade . It may take 15-20 years but once it fails what do you do? Drain the wholepond Pull it up and find a place to pay to dump all the plastic and put bentonite ? If you get a hole in a liner you will need to drain to the point of the hole to patch it. If theres a leak with bentonite you can dump it in the area of the lake of the leak and it can get into the leak and patch.

It's easier when you have other people spending your money!😅😅 but after you talked to the people with bentonite, that route seems cheaper also considering you sold everything to save and spending equal money for either. So you would save money, and if tge liner has a 25-year warranty, it probably wouldn't last much longer than that in the long run and the companymightnot evenbe around! If it was me, I'd do the bentonite, and it will eventually work itself out and maybe have to run the well a few times a year! You said it yourself that the truck of bentonite didn't cost that much, and i have a feeling that your pond is only leaking in 1 exact spot, where it goes down into the creek! So you can also use bentonite with the pond full and not have to drain it to fix.😏

My biggest issues with a liner are how do you add lots of structure without concern of damaging the liner. Also lots of rotting material collects at the bottom of a pond with nowhere to go. My vote is bentonite. I see way less cons with bentonite. Maybe you can get a sponsor either way for the pond build.

Put clay and a fence around it and put 4-8 pigs in the pond and they will seal it for you and put some grass seeds in the entire pond. Let the pigs be in there for the entire summer and in the fall fill your freezer.

I’m working to get into wildlife management currently so I don’t know much about pond building but something worth noting is the difference in the bank around the natural pond and the liner pond. Obviously the liner pond seems to be a newer build but if the liner is buried around those edges nothing will ever grow around your pond. I would guess you like the idea of seeing ducks, dove, or other wildlife around your property and using your pond. Having native or atleast natural vegetation around your pond is going to make a big difference in that aspect. Atleast in my opinion. Love the videos and all you do!

I use the same gate latches and when it freezes I have them on single posts and they’re off the same amount. Summer they’ll latch otherwise I need them pulled over like you. We’ve been dry enough the last two years that you were working with super dehydrated soil. It may change some with the moisture but likely still have issues.

I don't see rhe reason to test it. Bentonite and clay are the tried true and proven way to build ponds. As long as whoever is spreading it out and packing it down is qualified there'd be no surprises. The last thing you want is someone who shorts the order and goes too thin which would cause problems. Get the thickness in writing in the contract and watch everything they do. Don't pay until you are satisfied the job is done right

Also side note if you go liner you could call up the pond guys who help you build the tiny pond and have them help you build this for more content on both of you guys and if you put a liner then two feet of dirt your solid . So floating docks your not on the ocean and need bedded docks . Building a floating dock your self is easy and more content it’s big enough to have fun on boats and weird diy boats are big right now so after all the info I say use a liner

if you want to ensure it doesn't leak and you dont have any other factors to figure in , ie .. silt run-in , any water constant inlet or outlet ... lots of info needed to make a decision to help .. BUT... pack in some bentonite, put in a liner , cover it with safe soil to build your structure inside .... the bentonite would act as a 2nd safety for leaks if something pokes a hole in the liner , it wouldn't be a massive problem and possibly no problem at all ... or even mix the watersafe soil with bentonite to pack ontop of the liner for soil .....but it all boils down to if you do it yourself , how much money you are willing to pay , tons of factors we dont know to help you make a good decision

Using both methods is a bad idea. I have seen people make this mistake. The liner will get water and air under it and cause pockets and erosion over time. That will in turn create massive leaks that will cost a lot of money to fix. This type of thing happens with liners without using both methods.

Would it help to do soil samples from the clay/bentonite sites you went to and see if there's a difference between the one that worked and the one that leaks? Then take a soil same from your property and compare them. Either way whatever you choose I can't wait to see the darn pond. Lol.

They use liners to seal up landfills and stuff like that. I’ve worked with the geo synthetic liners. They can patch damn near any size hole with the liners.

Tell the guy with the leaky pond to throw a bale of straw in there. It is supposed to help create a biofilm the prevents leaking. Helps clear algae, and clears up the water a bit.
