Adventures of a Lifetime

Our day starts out rough, really rough. We head out into the ocean in search of protection from the southern winds that have blown in overnight, we are hoping for a decent ride but our hopes are squashed as soon as we head out of the cut and into the ocean....after a wild ride we make it to our anchorage but little do we know that the real show has yet to begin. We endure our scariest night at anchor EVER with a storm that comes out of no where. We get engulfed in a lightening storm, anchors drag, anchorage full of white caps...our nice anchorage quickly turns into the anchorage from hell...

Very nice. Something similar happened off Catalina Island in Southern California. Was anchored in Avalon Bay when a storm rolled in. OMG it was madness. I stayed anchored pretty well with 50 to 60 knot winds and rain. But we were up all night be because there were so many boats dragging anchor all over the Bay. Some poor sailboat next to us had the owner sitting on the bow pulpit pushing another boat away and this poor guy kept yelling "hello" to try and wake the occupants. Glad your anchor held but storms can be fun.
@adventures

Oh goodness that sounds like absolute madness and something I do not need to be in! Lol thankfully we really had no one around us except for mega yachts off in the distance who have full crews so at least we had one less thing to worry about that night!

You are lucky to have gotten a good hold on the bottom with a good anchor. One thing to remember is to take some load off the anchor by starting an engine and put it in forward but not enough throttle to slacken the chain. You got to pay attention for when the wind wanes you don’t run up on your anchor. It’s not as relaxing but it beats dragging and resetting an anchor in a storm.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we were very happy with our holding. That’s the great things about the Bahamas soooo much wonderful sand to anchor in!! We were considering that but decided at the time to ride it out unless it goes worse or if we noticed that we were dragging at all. Thankfully we stuck really well but that is very good advice and definitely something we considered

TJ's sailor vocabulary got a dusting off, courtesy of nature's awesome display of power. Glad all is well. Might I suggest, when Captain Mike inquires if all hatches are secure as storm approaches, the crew acts. He's Captain for a reason, and you're lucky to have him. Thanks for the show.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Lol yes it sure did and the hatches were all closed , the portholes is where some water leaked in because they weren’t closed very tightly but we are usually able to keep those open when it rains since they are under the overhang of the bow, the sideways rain and high winds clearly snuck up on us! And it seemed like no one responded to him due to how the video is cut but we told him that they all closed up!

You should have had your VHF on. With the lightbar on you lost your night vision and if a boat was drifting down on you you might not have enough time to avoid them. This anchorage was fairly empty but in a more crowded anchorage it might help avoid problems.

What an amazing lightning show! I know that Nordhavn vessels couldn't care less about the weather or the sea states but flesh and blood beings (human and canine) are quite different. I'm all the more impressed by your ship, that handled that very impressive storm without a beat. At the end, Natalie, when you were hunkered next to Camo, I can understand why neither of you is down with a long transocean voyage. I bet you could handle anything if you put your mind to it, but poor Camo looked as if he was really freaked out!
@adventures

It was an incredible show! And yes I agree the boat says what wind and waves I didn’t notice any. Camo and I were not saying the same thing. Poor Camo was MORTIFIED from that storm. I’ve never seen him worried on the boat before but that storm changed his opinion on the water for sure :/

That was an epic storm. I didn't hear what time at night it hit. I guess Mike has seen plenty of those living in Florida. They are common around Australia in summer. We call them electrical storms, don't last very long but usually with incredible hail. One I remember was 80 mph winds & up to 3 inch round hail stones. That'll do some damage.....
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yikes thankfully there was no hail but it was a thought there for a while that some may fall, that would do some serious damage! And it started lightening around 10pm and that lasted for a few hours and then around 11pm the storm hit hard and lasted about 2.5 hours 😳

That's a gale force 8-9 in Uk speak (Beaufort scale), I've been in that a couple of times and it depends on the captain and the boat whether you feel safe or not. A mad German captain, in an 80-year-old tug with no oil measure, was not fun. This boat can easily handle it and Mike seems such a knowledgeable and level headed guy, he can captain me any time.

"Will your anchor hold in the storms of life, When the clouds unfold their wings of strife? When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain, Will your anchor drift or firm remain? We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love." Hope you like it!

@Mac94920
@Mac94920 3 жыл бұрын
@@adventures No we really did not have the protection but the worst part was over probably within an hour. I had talked to a friend earlier on the phone from the Florida West Coast and he said it was pretty bad there. As you mentioned none of the weather services were predicting it coming as far south as we were. With our cruising in the Exumas we were having a hard time finding nice places to anchor due to the heavy winds and the wind shifts. I thought I could have a nice relaxing night on the hook at Black Pointe...WRONG! My wife was up watching the storm in the distance and then saw it coming close, I was sleeping like a log but she said the Anchor Alarm went off. I run to the helm and within a minute we had done a 180 and dragged the anchor. I ran out to the bow and let out some more chain but by that time the Rocna had reset. Wild night, rain sideways, could barely see. Safe Travels

What size Rocna do you have and how much chain did you put out? We’ve been in 57 knots but we were on our 1000 lb mooring so we were pretty secure but my husband started the engine just in case! I’m so glad I wasn’t on board at the time!!
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
We have a 250lb. Rocna and had almost 200 ft out, probably 180. We always anchor with more chain out than we need when we have the room to do it. Yikes being on a mooring ball in a storm is scary, we would have had the engines on as well if we were on a mooring ball!

How much chain did you have out...I'm thinking at least 300 feet? TJ must of been really Hangry to eat Turkey Bacon😜
@adventures

Hmm we were only in about 12 feet of water but we probably had out about 180 feet of chain. We typically do a 7:1 ratio just to be on the safe side and we love turkey bacon hahah we love all bacon actually 🤣

It was truly insane!! And yes I am very glad as well, I’m not sure what the issue with the seaRay is we watched them trying to anchor during the day when the arrived and even then I could tell their anchor wasn’t sticking and it took them over an hour to anchor

Storms at sea are tune ups with God.nSee how close you are as a speck of sand on a beach on a windy stormy day. Let's you know Gods in charge if you're intune to him you won't be to scared for you know how temporary life is. Make it worth something other than yourself and being to materialistic. Let's one know just shelter from a storm is the difference from life and death. Be greatful and pray that millions $ boat has God's blessings and is completely sea worthy

I’d love for your father to answer this question? What is the most sea worthy, sea fairing vessel you ever been on and which is your most trusted when it comes to your life and your family’s life + most all around favorite and why? Jack of all? Please everyone share what yacht you would choose and why? Rules: Over 50 feet Owner operator. No crews! Extra hands yes but no crew. If something goes wrong guess who fixes it? Yep, you! And trawler speeds but best over all experience/performance. I will be Towing a Center consul boat( Boston Whaler 420 Outrage). So size matters 😉. I don’t believe it’s as obvious as readers may think. I personally love Riviera yachts(72 sport) but their mission is different. I fish, I day boat, I weekend entertain, I cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean Sea. I’d love to cruise the world but not with a Riviera sport. Could it? Yes! But not my first choice. Plus I wouldn’t choose a riviera great boats but I don’t think they’re breaking ice . Also those reading this comment what’s your favorites and non mean opinions?
