@@mikethatcher6494 Pretty much. Went from "Small team doing some laptop stuff in a verified to be safe area" to "There are about 20 guys with guns and an rpg argueing the finer points of Taliban rule with us" Not a great place to be if you're essentially a student who was rushed through the academy with major corner-cutting before being quickly made 2nd LT, since the two people in the entire military who do what you do, are both on a mandatory cool-down time and can't be deployed. That's what the sergeant was for, since I wasn't expected to know much outside of said laptop and my languages. The military was badly funded and hopelessly overstretched with various peacekeeping missions. Other sad examples involve people being told to burn our trash in the burnpits, but nog being given any protective gear while god-knows-what goes up in smoke. Boo Boo -- You know that is a very good question. In my day Women Marines never stood guard mount or for inspection with the men. There were no women in our Marine infantry company. I did see Women Marines standing inspection as a sperate unit. They worked in the headquarters company at the battalion headquarters but you would never see them carrying a rifle or standing inspection with the men. I guess the same kind of pinning ceremony was done at the WM barracks but only by the women. Things are different now and so a Marine who recently served might be a better source

Chief called me first thing in the morning to his office. When I got there he was bouncing all around doing what Chiefs do. He started dragging me all over the building telling to tag alone and that he needed to talk with me. So I followed him for 15 minutes or so. He stop, looked his watch and realized he was late for Stand up with the Squadron Commander. So he drug me to Commander Office for the morning briefing. We all came to attention when the Major walked in. Before being at eased he started walking around the room passing out strips to those in the room who had made E-7. I being E-6 was excited thinking maybe I had made it. When he came my way he walked right passed me and my heart sank and I felt my face go flush. Talk about inner crying. not military but I was in JROTC in high school and in the spring of my senior year at the start of the semester the instructor calls each of us in turn into his office to review our ribbons and ranks. when it was my turn i went into his office. as he is going through the information he gets to my rank and says that i was an E-5 sergeant(my high school has army JROTC). due to a mix-up on my end of who was supposed to be in uniform that week, i had worn my uniform to school that day and had corporal stripes on at that time. so i stopped him and said "sir, there must be a mistake. I'm a corporal. I have it right here(pointing to my insignia.)" he then tells me again. "you're a sergeant. I promoted you." i was completely in shock at that moment. I had taken the promotion test about 1 1/2 months earlier and knew i had passed but usually we had promotions the week after the test was administered and i had not been promoted then, so to be promoted at that time took me completely by surprise.

Priceless! I bet he thought the worst. We call them in field promotions (Army). To get one based on integrity and skill to solve a problem that could have endangered his crewmates is sweet. In our Navy we had a case where the Coxwain on the bridge of a frigate passed out in the middle of a very difficult manouvre in 30' seas. He had complained of nausia but did not want to risk the ship. The ship was hit by a large wave and all on the bridge were thrown to the deck. Before anyone could blink an eye a comms rating dived across the bridge and caught his head before it hit the deck. She (yes she) then manned the wheel and applied for more revs to turn the ship along the swell and then into the following sea bow on, this saving the ship and crew from a disaster. The Commander was summoned by the First Officer as he was off watch. He was told what happened and the tape from the CCTV showed it all. The Commander ordered her to stay on the wheel and he placed a sat call to Operations in Melbourne reporting the incident. 10 minutes later he returned and told the rating she was promoted to Leading Seaman (Coxwain) and to stay at the wheel as her norman duty. She was awarded the Navy Bravery Medal back at base.

Got to participate in something like this back in the 80s. Was visiting a Chief that was my buddy's dad while we were on leave in the area. Sitting in his office in civvies, he told us to just sit and look serious. A young enlisted troop was ushered in, and the Chief went through some papers on his desk, without looking up. When he did, he let out a sigh, greeted the airman, and introduced my buddy and me as agents with OSI, that had brought a serious matter to his attention, then proceeded to read the kid his rights. He then asked the kid if he knew what it was about, and the kid, his eyes as big as dinner plated, and by this time confused and scared as hell, quietly said he didn't. The Chief then handed him a piece of paper, telling him to read it and give his response. It was the order promoting the kid to Senior Airman. He looked up, at all three of us smiling at him, and we all busted out laughing.

So when my promotion finally came through everyone at my Battery HQ was surprised because both sets of orders came at the same time. It turns out that I had been put in for a rapid promotion by my Battalion Commander! So I wasn’t aware of the promotion and showed up to work at a Command Post Exercise we were having. I walked in and my team leader looked at me and said that I was out of uniform and had me drop for push-ups! I did 50 and he had me recover. He handed me the PFC ranks and as I was about to put them on he said that I was still out of uniform! Now I was so happy with the PFC promotion that I thought maybe I was actually missing something of my uniform but before I could check it out he dropped me again! I cranked out about 25 push-ups and he told me to recover. As I got up everyone was laughing, about 50-70 people watching me! I laughed too although I didn’t know why. Then our Battery Commander stepped up and presented me with my SP4 ranks! I was shocked and speechless! Everyone was laughing and congratulating me. Those were my best two promotions ever. Even better than my Sgt (E-5) promotion. Hahahahaha.

I had something similar to me happen when I was in the Army. I was a fairly new E-5 (Sergeant) and my platoon Sergeant pulled me aside and said I recently pissed hot when we had our unit urine test. I, of course, got really freaked out and told him that wasn't possible. He went on for a couple more minutes while I tried to tell him I was innocent. He then said, I'm just fucking with you. I want you to be our new squad leader which was typically reserved for E-6 (Staff Sergeant).

As adjutant at a Cadet Force unit, I had the honour to do this to our incoming officer commanding, the last parade before he took post he was conned into taking the officer of the day post. He came onto the parade square and turned to me and asked "Any problems today?" My reply came back, full volume "Sir, yes sir! There is someone on parade incorrectly dressed!!" " Who? " he came back with. I replied "You, sir" I then read the promotion paper out and the outgoing o/c did the honours with changing the rank slide!

Serving in the RAF I got a call at home to come in early as the boss wanted to see me. So many thoughts going through my mind even though I's told not to worry. Get into work taken in to the boss's office to be told 'There aren't many perks to my rank (he was a Sqn Ldr, Major is the equivalent in US) But this is the best I've done. You're promoted to sergeant and you deserve it' Walk out in a daze and quietly had a coffee letting the shock set in. I'd only got my corporal up 4 years before and this was unheard of. Admin sergeant came in and said, 'Have you all met the new sergeant then?' opinion split between how the fuck did he get that? to nice one well done'

I was in the Air Force in the 80s. This is what is called a STEP promotion, Stripes to Excellent Performers and they are hard to get and not given frequently and receiving one is a huge feather in the cap in an Air Force career. That being said, i don't understand this practice of making one shit bricks when they are about to receive such an honor. Maybe it is somehow become a tradition and it seems fun for the commander, but to me this is a management practice that only serves to devalue the capabilities and commitment of the enlisted force. I get the idea of surprising the member, but making him or her think that they are going to be reprimanded just prior to receiving what will perhaps be the best honor that they will receive in their Air Force career to me is just wrong.

@Jason Poole this is nothing to do with guys ripping on guys if you look on KZbin you will see there are similar videos when a woman gets one of these promotions. I don't know if you've been in the military or not but I can tell you right now a colonel is not going to be "hanging out" with a tech sergeant fraternization rules between officers and enlisted prohibit that and it is not a similar relationship that a boss and employee would have in civilian life. He would only interact with the colonel when he is being dressed down for doing something really bad or commended for doing something really good. While this is all in good fun to the commander it is really kind of condescending from the enlisted person's point of view. That is my whole point.
@kennethsouthard60426 жыл бұрын
@Jason Poole Against my better judgement, I'm going try and explain this one more time and even ignore your personal digs in the process. It's not an equal relationship, your commanding officer is god, he has the power to ruin your career even bring you up on charges before a courts martial or an Article 15 process where you can be demoted, lose pay, be kicked out or in the worst case scenario even go to military prison and have a federal conviction on your record. The worst a civilian boss can do is fire you. The issue here is when this guy suddenly starts getting dressed down by the commander, I'm sure that there were all sorts of things running through his head, none of them good. When it was over and he was promoted, while it did show appreciation, it also reinforced a superiority complex between officers and enlisted that was inappropriate in this case. If you don't believe me, look at promotion ceremonies on KZbin between fellow officers, you don't see this same sort of "friendly banter" as you call it, it is much more appreciative and respectful and this to me is what the tech sergeant in this video also deserved.
@kennethsouthard60426 жыл бұрын
@Jason Poole Oh well, I have tried and failed to have an intelligent conversation with you, I'm done. I get it that you disagree, but rather than come up with anything meaningful, you just keep increasing the personal affronts at every turn this says far more about you than about me. Best wishes and have a nice day!
