Is "glymphatic" a combination of the words "glial" and "lymphatic"? Interesting fact, Einstein had an extremely high number of glial cells in the areas of the brain related to visual processing.

Considering sleep is one of those biological functions that there has been no clear answer for, I'd say this is a step in the right direction in figuring that out. Obviously, this is nowhere near enough information to fully explain it, but a stepping stone anyway.

Hey, one thing that would make your videos even better is the use of a de-esser. It's an audio treatment tool that allows to get rid of the very high-pitched "sssss" sound standard recording gear generates. For example, your video's audio is particularly unpleasant at 1:10 due to many "S"s in a row, but so it goes for the rest too. Give it a try on a laptop, it's pretty annoying. Other than that, amazing job guys!

I wonder is this glymphatic system is the reason why sleep and cognitive rest are the #1 treatment for concussions/post concussive syndrome. I had the latter for 8 miserable months. I was in grad school and was discouraged from taking time off to rest, even though I had a medical note. Another doctor gave me adderall to help my focus which increases norepi. It wasnt until spring break when I spent 15 hours a day doing guided meditation in bed, 8 hours sleeping for 7 whole days, no adderall. After that I was like 80-90% better in terms of memory.

If this is true, I feel like this explains so much... Like the question, "Why do we sleep?" People wondered how it actually recharged us, and this is a pretty good answer. It cleans the brain up of all the waste it produced while you were active! Why is this not talked about more in the science world? I bet there's a link to "amount of fluid produced" to "how vivid dreams are."

Wow, this might be one of the greatest or the greater discovery in such a long time. The Brain controls everything or nearly, a healthy brain is a healthy body. If that System is directly related to aging, then knowing how to manage it, would probably make possible to increase our overall capacity of regeneration, and our entire body's "resistance" to aging, and eventually be able to considerably increase our lifetimes, by many times, even. Excite.
@SethMacMillan
@SethMacMillan 6 жыл бұрын
My understanding of aging, on a cellular level, is largely how certain diseases develop (like cancer). With this discovery, there's virtually no way it isn't connected to the aging process. You're right to be excite. This may innovate the very focus of treatments regarding psychobiological deterioration of the brain. Maybe not necessarily increase our physical lifespan, but this could be the key to long term psychological health. And, maybe the whole concept of heads in a jar, could be a reality in the not-so-far future.

Amazing video! Although important, sleep is only half (or maybe third) of the story. Unlike the circulatory/cardiovascular system that is equipped with a pump (the heart) to make fluid (the blood) flow, the lymphatic system has no pump. You may wonder what makes the lymph/lymphatic fluid flow through the lymphatic vessels. Well, that's exercise that makes muscles contract and pushes lymph through the lymph vessels.

Lymph: "You have such a dirty mind." Glymph: "Yeah, I know. I haven't been sleeping very well lately." Seriously, though, this is a fascinating discovery. Makes you idly wonder if there's any relationship of this physical waste disposal process and REM sleep/dreaming, which I've long thought of as a form mental housecleaning, or if its just coincidental that they both happen during consciousness downtime.
