The difference between "Jon's reality" and ours is not that the jokes work or dont work, but that the "Jon Arbuckle is pathetic" jokes actually don't have any punch lines from Jon's own perspective, meaning that in his reality, there are no joke, and he is just alone in his own pathetic misery... which is a very depressing reality to experience for a continious 40+ years.

Yeah, whether the jokes work or not is not the point.

Yeah. I decided not to harp on that point though because we haven't actually gotten to the part of the video that does a deep dive into that concept yet.

The point with the ridicule of john is that he's NOT happy or content, if you actually go and look (which I did after first seeing this video) the difference between John and Garfield is that Garfield is content with who and what he is, and the jokes around John is that he's not content or happy and most of the time the comics making fun of him are pointing out that everything about him (his bad fashion, inability to deal with women, weird hobbies, etc.) are the source of his discontent, because they are the things that keep him from getting the things he wants. The analysis is hyper accurate, because the comic frames John's unhappiness as a direct consequence and result of who he is.

Just for the record the self deletion jokes only happened twice in his whole data set, so that can't be the mystery category since there are roughly 200 of the mystery category ones in his data set.

Also, I just wanted to mention that things may feel a bit disjointed and crazy right now, and they will get a bit more so ahead. But he is building to a cohesive point about the deeper meaning the fanbase has found in garfield and how the (possibly unintentional) themes of the actual comic have given rise to a strangly deep and meaningful meta narrative in the fanbase. We just have a bit of a journey ahead to get there.

Keep in mind on the 'Jon is pathetic' front. This comic strip started in the 1970s. There was no concept of 'These weird hobbies give him pleasure and that's fine', in that era it was all 'these weird hobbies give him pleasure And We Should Laugh At Him For that! We Needs-Must Properly SHAME Him into acknowledging that this is Weird until he Stops Having Fun because Weird!' Is how those sorts of jokes were intended to play-out. Unabashedly enjoying 'weird' hobbies being representative of a laudable iconoclast is a relatively recent thing.

John has redeeming qualities. The problem is that the comic portrays anything that could be redeeming about Jon as pathetic. Even if you can find redeeming or relatable qualities in John, the comic says that you are just as pathetic and should expect to be laughed at by the general person. Whether the comic is right in this assertion isn't the point; the point is that the comic raises Garfield up most often at the expense of putting John down, and that says a lot about the intent of the comic and the message it portrays. Also, he said at 43:27 that the jokes still work without John hearing Garfield's thoughts, thanks to body language. You are both making the same point. The problem is that if John can't hear the thoughts, he is just saying all these things to a mute cat where there is often no body language to interpret, which makes a lot of it very unsettling or depressing.

SEW/John's a master of suffering and descent into madness. His deep research into his obsession of the week-month-years really shines through. Recommending his videos on the indie RPG Fear & Hunger, the live-action Archie show Riverdale, What the Internet did to Undertale, and of course the horrors of buying a Dell PC for max suffering.

holy shoot, that's genius. and because of the fact the people behind lasagna cat are an actual production company called fatal farm, they could easily execute something like that. I'm honestly surprised that fatal farm hasn't done this before, for any of their absurd art projects.

I know this is several months late, but I still wanted to share this. 6:36 Fun fact about the comic on-screen: it was created by Tyson Hesse, who has now worked on several OFFICIAL Sonic projects - drawing art for the comics, storyboarding and directing some of the animations, and even being put in charge of fixing the look of movie Sonic! Edit: Wait, I forgot you have a reaction to the Sonic video, and I can't remember if he talked about this.

Can i just ask, did you rewatch the first part of this before continuing on here? 41:00, the problem with your view is that Jon is very much NOT happy at all. It would be one thing if he was just weird, but the comic shows he is actively unhappy. 44:13, weather the joke is still there is not the point. The point is that, to Jon, Garfield is just a cat and his depressive thoughts are not interrupted by the joke as they are for us.

at the end you seem to be thinking that S.E.W. is saying that... the comics are bad without Garfield's dialog, i think, that seems to be how you're talking it's just i have no idea how you got there as whether or not the comics are good with Garfield's dialog taken out or not isn't that point, it's that Garfield's dialog is normally used to bring up the mood with a punchline but John lives in a world where that doesn't happen, and the mood stays down. he's not mentioning the quality of the comics at all just the world they're presenting.

You can, indeed, still watch the Lasagna Cat videos. Yes, I imagine the laugh at 5:20 is a dead giveaway. Yeah, you kind of have to get to the end of the game to see the name Yuji Naka. I mean, Garfield & Friends had a rap episode, so sure. Fatal Farm wasn't an amateur to begin with. Freelance, yes. Actually, no. Night Mind's "Lasagna Cat: Ego Stripping for a Fractured Psyche" goes into it where SEW does not, but in short: Jon was originally a self-insert for Jim Davis, and Jim was married twice, thus the 2 for an answer. But Jon diverged from Jim, only having gotten as far as getting a long-term girlfriend in 2006, 28 years after the beginning of the strip, implying that he was in his late 50s (using the age he mentions in the strip, not "The Garfield Show") at the time. Near the end of 1980 (December 23, to be exact), Jon jokes that he's 29. Garfield correctly predicts that the punchline is "I would have been 30, but I was sick a year." If we take the fact that he's telling this joke as evidence that he's 30 or so... That is a lot of editing. I don't know how much time that much editing takes, but if you told me "years", I'd believe it. And he made a mathematical error -- note that he multiplied 40 by three hundred *fifty-six* instead of three hundred sixty-five -- causing him to underestimate by a few hundred. (I'd probably multiply by 365.25, or 365.2422 for better accuracy anyway, but no matter.) Hmmmm... I guess? Like, we can surmise that Garfield disagrees, but we lose the specifics. (And I can't remember ever seeing Jon's wax lips, anyway.) And now I'm imagining today's strip (as of this comment) without Garfield's thought: Liz: How long have you been on hold? Jon: (holding a phone to his ear with a smile on his face) An hour. Liz: An *hour*? Jon: I don't mind. (Liz's face falls as Garfield turns to us with a smile.) This version of the comic could be construed as the joke being "This guy's such a dullard that he doesn't mind being on hold for an hour-plus." With Garfield's punchline, we learn that the hold music is polka, and thus, the joke is: "Look at this dork, he likes polka so much that he finds it makes hour-long hold times bearable," and so the joke is also kind of at polka's expense.

You cut him, before he finished making his point, so no wonder you disagree. You totally should check his video on chainsaw man. It's great. If you don't want spoilers though, read part 1 of manga first or skip part after he fakes ending video, though without it his analyze is incomplete.

19:00 well, there's someone that watched "the lord of the rings but every time they take a step Sam says it's the farthest he's been from home" and that's 11 hours it was on yt for years because the constant interruptions made the movie unwatchable and thus not really a good pirated way to watch the movie (I believe there was a similar lawsuit about something else that ruled it that way basically) until it gained notoriety and... warner pulled the plug, that or the bots scanning for copyrighted material got better
