Jay still can't wrap his mind around the fact that bands from back in the day weren't stuck in a box playing 1 sound of music like today. These are real musicians who can play any type of song.

Back in the days of ol'..talent and versatility was required by ALL Artists. Fans counted on that. Not everyone was qualified to get noticed and signed to a Record Label. Musicians had to understand how to play at least one instrument..of some kind. Vocal tracks.. were performed extensively until the right sound was achieved. No Auto-tuning
@fuchsiaswing85452 жыл бұрын
I think people doing reactions struggle to identify the Stones’ sound because they're constantly jumping around 30+ years of catalog. At their purest and best, the Stones were a rock and roll band heavily rooted in blues, country, soul, and gospel. They flirted with just about every musical trend, from psychedelia and baroque pop to reggae and funky disco. But at their core, they're a British band embodying cosmic American music.

Another great country-rock-sounding song from the Stones: “Dead Flowers.” It’s a fun one; I think you’ll like it. It may sound surprising to hear a British band be influenced by American country music, but all of those guys back then in England were listening to every kind of American music you can think of. In fact, it was bands like the stones that introduced blues and country music to “sheltered” American kids who had never heard that stuff before. A kid from suburban Chicago had to hear a blues song from a band from London even though blues was being played in places 20 miles from him.

People didn;t notice becaue they were too busy scremaing at the concerts and accepting the Beatles as gods. To me the original country rock Southern or otherwsie has it's roots in Rockabilly of the 1950's, which was not even the term for it until someone put a label on it. Music wasn't just a pastime for me. It was another form of food . I never simply "heard" music -- I felt it ... I devoured it . It fed me -- my hungry soul . A couple things about this particular song. Firstly, it was recorded in Muscle Shoals Alabama where some of the best R&B was produced, so it has some of that delta blues feel to it. Also, listen carefully to the tempo of the song. It starts out real slow and bluesy and very gradually picks up speed as it goes along until it's really rocking by the time they finish. I don't think it's an accident that it happens this way, I think it's primarily the genius of Charlie Watts, one of the best rock drummers of all time. And the rest of the band comes right along with him. It's a great classic 70's rock song, glad you got to know it a bit!

There's a really good live version of this song that the Stones played at their free gig in Hyde Park in London in 1969. I can never get my head around the fact that Mick could grow up in Dartford (just east of London) and his voice sounds like that!

"Honky Tonk Women", "The Girl with Far Away Eyes", Sweet VIrginia". The Rolling Stones just may be one of the best country bands in the world. LOL

Love your reactions! When you hear Stones songs from this period, part of what's going on is the country-rock sounds of one of the best horn sections is rock history! The horn section is two Texans-- Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trumpet. Bobby first met the Stones in San Antonio in '64.

A group of fellow musicians and I included this song every time we performed for our community. The result was always a large number of sixty and seventy year olds rocking out. Great song.

Rock and Country have their roots both firmly planted in the Blues, BlueGrass and jazz. They have connections for sure.

This was released in July 1969 & I remember first hearing it on the radio. It was very heavy/funky with that heavy opening cowbell /drum intro and fuzzy chunka-chunka guitar riff. Great stuff!

The Stones had great respect for American blues & country. The Stones recorded quite few country tunes including the acoustic/country version of this song, called Country Honk (from their seminal LP, Let It Bleed), as well as High & Dry, Dear Doctor, Dead Flowers, Girl With the Faraway Eyes, and Sweet Virginia. In fact they invented their own genre which I call Country Sleaze, because all of their country tunes have a sleazy, unwholesome side to them. Dead Flowers and Faraway Eyes have been covered a lot by country artists.

The song is early stones and was originally blues and much slower.I remember Keith Richards saying they were staying at a remote place in the US and him and Mick were sitting outside chatting and recounting stories/experiences .They wrote a rough outline of the song but back in England at the recording studio it was changed to be more commercial. It was a blues song written on a ranch in the deep south. In the UK I think most people would recognise Jaggers voice on any record. That song came out in 69 so its over 50 years old.

According to songfacts: The Stones started recording this as a country song based on Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues." They made it into a rocker for release as a single and released the country version, "Country Honk," a few months later on Let It Bleed.

Oh, this was huge from '69 - '70 and remains one of the top classic rock songs ever. I remember hearing this on the radio every monday night on the way to catechism class in my mom's car, and fairly certain she didn't get the lyrics. It's Country/Blues/Rock. Their whole Beggars Banquet album from '68 had a country/hill folk/delta blues vibe to it (PRODIGAL SON, DEAR DOCTOR, NO EXPECTATIONS, FACTORY GIRL, PARACHUTE WOMAN) and though it doesn't have this song on it (Honky Tonk Women was released as a single), it has Sympathy For The Devil, which was a big hit but didn't seem to go with the rest of the vibe of the album. It was their seventh LP and the last one featuring Brian Jones, who had started the band and was its front man, at first. RIP Brian.

there's a more country version released on Let It Bleed album called "COUNTRY HONK" which features a fiddle, and no cowbell or drums.

Honky Tonk Women is a rock and country fusion. One of the Stones' all-time classics. Lots more early Stones, their best, to react to, if you haven't yet - Brown Sugar, Tumblin' Dice, It's Only Rock N' Roll, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man, You Can't Always Get What You Want, She's A Rainbow, Bitch, Angie and Wild Horses. Then there are their mid-to-late-70s classics like Beast of Burden, When the Whip Comes Down, Shattered and Start Me Up. Then there are what I consider their three best songs period: Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Sympathy for the Devil and Gimme Shelter. Enjoy.

I went to the Stones show in Nashville a few years back. They pulled out a lot of their southern rock and country for that concert. I did not know they had so many country hits until then. They also had invited some local Nashville country celebs play with them. One of my favorite concerts.

The Rolling Stones redid that song in a real country style on their album "Let It Bleed." Track is called "Country Honk." You should check it out.

I think Amber was missing the basic story of the song. He's left someone behind who he can't get off his mind. Even the aggressively-easy women he's interacting with in bars can't distract him from the girl back home that fills his head. He's coined the longing for her as the "Honky Tonk Blues".

Saw 'em once back in '94, and this and "Wild Horses" were the standouts (and I'll leave it to others to guess which one was punctuated by a front-row moll in a leather dress flashing her baps for the camera as a video montage of historical babes rolled on the huge onstage video monitor). For a deep up-country vibe, check out "Dear Doctor"...
