In the same barn that I found my Rover P6 I also found a BMC 1300. It has been sitting for many years. In the last video I got it running and now it's time to give it to my wife. Will she like it? Surprising my wife with her first classic car!

LOL!!! Yeah..... The rod-change boxes were much better then the remote-linkage boxes. Good idea to do the engine mounts. The cars can have really serious clutch-judder if the mounts are not in good shape, and the one that usually turns to jelly the fastest, is the one behind the engine, right up against the bulkhead - the hardest one to access, in other words!!! Go figure!

Nice to see so many British cars there. We had a Morris 1300 as a family car for many years, my father rebuilt it from one that had been totalled, it was only 18 months old. They are great cars and pretty simple to work on. Best wishes from the UK.

You two are a very sweet couple Adam. I hope your wife's health is now good. The first car I got my wife was a 1964 Hillman Imp. I was a fast jet instructor in the Royal Air Force and one of the young student pilots had abandoned this Imp outside the Officers' Mess. It was not starting he said. Offered him £10 which he took. It was a fuel supply problem - easily fixed. Spent a lot of time fixing the many stupid little things wrong with it. Replaced the tiny clutch with a bigger one and replaced those rubber doughnuts on the rear drive shafts using 3 joined up jubilee circlips to compress the new doughnuts to make them fit. Loved how easy it was to remove the rear panel and remove the Coventry Climax fire pump engine backwards. I learned a lot on that car. Now at age 83, my current classic is the 2nd from last made (car number 163 of 164 UK models) Jaguar XJ 5.3C in Carriage Brown with Biscuit leather. It now has FenAir A/C, a 4 speed GM 700r4 and many sensible mods. It has cost a fortune to do over 6 years and is about to get the Tom Lenthall fuel injection with modern ECU treatment like Harry Metcalf's car. Your channel is an invaluable help to those of us struggling to keep an old Jaguar going. Thanks for all you do.

I have four of these cars, two are 1100cc, the other two are 1300cc. The 1300's are DEFINETLY the ones to go for. With the "Austin America", I am not sure if they ever came out over there in USA in anything OTHER then the 1300cc A-series engine. The 1100 version of these cars tends to be a bit underpowered, but they are still a great run-around-town car - provided you live somewhere flat with no hills!!!

That gearchange issue… you might find that if you take a look down the back of the engine below the carburettor, the gear mechanism goes through a right angle or two via “knuckles” which need a) to be positioned correctly on the splined shafts and b) need to be tight! It looks from the movement in the gearlever that it could all be loose. An hour should sort it as long as your wife moves the lever whilst you bury your head behind the carb!

Nice buy. Sounds like more than just an engine mount. More like the sandwich plate between the gearbox and the gear change case. There is also a large rubber bobbin mount at the rear of the gear change. If it's the later rid change its going to be the rear mounting for that. But it also sounds like you have an inner drive shaft failing. They are rubber with u-bolts. If you are going to change the engine mounts it's advisable to change them all. The seats look like recliners that have been swapped side to side. Unless foreign market cars used that chrome lever to lock the seats in place. Have fun. It's a cool little car.

Your wife is very gracious. For someone who wants a Corvette, she was gracious in saying it is cute, and in driving the car back to the garage. A few more fixer-uppers/ flippers to go before that Corvette appears. By the way, C3 seats are horribly uncomfortable. I think your wife should sit in a C3 before deciding she really, really wants one.

I know you and your wife will work on this car together, for re-sale, and to trade-up over future cars until you and she achieve her desired C3. It’s amazing to find one so original, but I think to make some reasonable profit on it you’ll need to put a bit more effort into maybe stripping and cleaning up the engine bay components etc. and taking it to the next level. Maybe an unleaded cylinder head conversion ? The ride should be really good so maybe the Hydrolastic suspension needs some attention ? Great to hear that little A-series buzzing around !

The gear linkage doesn't have bushings. You will find the 1/2 inch bolts on the gearlinkage on the back of the gearbox above the differential housing need tightening. There is also a grease nipple on the diff housing that needs grease.

This video brought back memories. My first car in about 1985 was a 1965 Morris 1100, very similar to this but with 4 doors. It had been sitting in my Dad's shed for a few years rusting away, and I dragged it out, put a junkyard engine in it as the original engine had been sitting in pieces on Dad's workbench all that time, and I didn't feel confident to rebuild it. I had that car for a number of years, and it was always a great little car. These cars were still quite common in New Zealand in the 80's when I drove it, and I was very impressed with the hydrolastic suspension which gave such a smooth, comfortable ride. I hope your wife enjoys driving it. Those engines are bulletproof, so I am sure it won't give her any trouble. But yes, of course she wants that Corvette, so I am sure this will be a good first step in that direction :)

I couldn't understand why nothing seemed to be coming through at the brake end. The penny took a long time to drop....you got it, she was working the clutch pedal!!! Very rare to see such a good example, here in the UK they were very common once. I remember driving one to school (illegally) when I was quite young. Scarily that was nearly 50 years ago. My grandfather has one of these (actually an Austin 1300 but basically the same car) from new in 1969 which my Dad owned for a while after Grandpa died in the early 70's. I don't remember that car as was only a baby at the time but my Mum learned to drive in another similar car at the end of the 70's. Great cars with decent performance for the time and good ride & handling. Very prone to rust though. Your wife seems genuinely cool. I wish I had a wife/girlfriend who was a car enthusiast. Hope you have a lot of good times with that 1300.

The answer is buy your wife a really large head scarf and a set of cool sunglasses like Audrey Hepburn used to wear. Take your wife to dinner somewhere with her new look -- she will love it. Fold the scarf in half making a triangle. Place on her head .Tie the scarf once under the chin and then take the corners and make a firm knot behind her neck --- No messy hair.

@@craigmorton1944 Well I finally took her out a couple of weeks ago after having the car for ten years. Just for a drive for 20 minutes. She complained about getting pollen on her so she sneezed constantly, you can probably never get a woman happy 😆

What about trading up to an E Type ? I started with a $380 motor bike, after trading 21 cars I ended up with an Aston DB6. Sold the Aston and now own a 1969 Ser 2 E type roadster. (my forever car). Good luck and persevere. My wife is also understanding and loves British sports cars.

Well that would be for me, the E-type. I want to do something fun to get my wife involved in my job and hobby.

They did export plenty of those to the U.S. I assume they all went into the crusher and became scrapmetal.
