In Japan you need to bring your own trash home, it goes for tourists too. Not the most convenient when you are day traveling/visiting, but the rules apply to all. There are recycle bins though inside the subway. We ended up using the trash in public toilet. Also it's not very well appreciated in their culture to have people eating on the street, especially walking and slurping your drink or leaking your ice cream. I guess also that by going to a restaurant you don't have to carry your trash. We just were there few weeks ago for Sakura and experienced the same things you guys are doing. We loved Japan!

2:59 same Erin, same. when i was in Japan, i was so confused as to how the streets remain so clean despite no trashcans? turns out that it's just culture to carry the trash home or wherever u may find a bin. I guess by making it inconvenient to throw stuff, it discourages littering in a sense? it makes you more mindful I suppose honestly i need their mind tricks in my country cos we have a serious littering problem here

Kudos to you Lockwood family. I’m impressed with your family. I’ll be going to Japan in the fall 2023 and spending most of my time in Osaka which i missed on my trip in 2019. I agree with you on takoyaki. The center was totally different from what I’m expecting. Now my favorite meal in Japan was OKONOMIYAKI in Hiroshima. Three major styles for OKONOMIYAKI Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Congrats on your travels.
