A coin´s value is as much as in the stories it tells you and how they resonate as with how shiny or fancy it looks! Some of my favourite coins have cost me less than 20 euros.

I've been watching your interesting channel for some time, and finally have subscribed to it. I've got two questions about ancient Roman coins, that you might do videos on. 1) Where are all these ancient coins usually found? Are they just laying around in the dirt, in peoples backyards? 2) Why are there so many Roman Empire coins around to be found? Were the Romans that careless in "losing money"? Did the legionnaires have holes in their pockets?
@jonathanc.gillespie489711 ай бұрын
Well, for one thing Rome spanned vast amounts of territory. The second reason was that you have to remember that there weren’t really banks as we know them. So a lot of times if you had, say, incoming raiders or plague, you’d bury your coins intending to come back to them once all was back to normal. Or a host of other reasons people could have had to bury them and not be able to retrieve them.

I first got into roman coins from buying a horrid lot of 10 uncleaned coins off of Ebay when I was in the 8th grade. I butchered 6 coins, but 2 or 3 were the city commemorative coins in EF. Sold those for double what I paid for the lot of 10, and it snowballed from there!!!! I have maybe 200 Roman coins now. And I still collect the LRB where I started. But I have some scarcer and rarer coins now :)

As a Gallienus zoo (and some legionary) collector, I feel personally attacked by that description, lol! But seriously, my first coin was an impulse buy on eBay ( *gasp* ) because it came up as a result while searching something completely unrelated. It was a gallienus stag and was just $10 shipped and I totally couldn’t believe an ancient coin could be had at that price. Thankfully, after doing more research, I found it came from a reputable seller. I am now just sans 3 types to complete my zoo!

What is considered as “expensive” collection ? Worth 100+K ? 1+M? Like.... what are the levels ?
@ClassicalNumismatics3 жыл бұрын
Your question doesnt really have an answer. This will strongly depend of the person judging the collection. The world´s most expensive private coin collections reach the tens of millions. Some collections are worth hundreds of thousands, etc. Even on the same theme, like roman coins, condition, rarity, how completist are you on determining which emperors to collect, among other factors will result on a more or less expensive collection. You can make a collection of hundreds of coins and spend less than a thousand dollars.
