Surrender offers the beauty of effortlessness, but of course we are afraid of it leading to death, since we think that to sustain life requires our effort. It is not so. In fact, what is necessary will happen by itself -- but it may not SEEM so, for several reasons. We have to persevere through this illusion to get to the other side.

Brilliant example, thank you! Is there a connection of this with psychoanalysis and how most activities are done and governed by the unconscious? So is will-power completely an illusion or does it have any importance?

It's a great point. There is a kind of connection, yes, but analysis takes it from a somewhat different angle and perspective. Willpower is a useful concept so long as you feel you have it -- "it" (whatever feels like willpower) should be applied either to the practices of self-inquiry or surrender and/or if necessary to doing those things that help you become wholer emotionally and physically, preparing yourself thereby for surrender/self-inquiry.
