the beast gear is dropped from covet cache quests. That's how i got the rocket launcher, the dark machete, and the katana. I also found a katana from clearing out an infestation

Do the bosses ever drop anything good? Almost seems like a waste of ammo and resources to kill them

They can drop good loot but it seems a bit inconsistent

They do, but it's really random. I got the Crusher and its drum mag from the Beast the first time I beat him, but never anything good off him since.
