Surujin-Jutsu (or スルジン術 in Japanese) includes the fighting techniques ( 術 Jutsu ) with a chain that has a weight attached to one end and a short sharp weapon at the other ( スルジン Surujin ) according to Ryukyu Kobujutsu. The weight is used for twining, and the sharp weapon for thrusting and stabbing. The length of the regular (or short) Surujin corresponds to the wingspan of the outspread arms (which is about one and a half meters or 5 feet). The long Surujin can measure up to twice this regular length. Next, Ippon-Kumite (or 一本組手 in Japanese) means ‘one step sparring’. Typically, this involves a standard way of responding to a single attack technique. In this video (recorded on 6 May 2024), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national champion from the Netherlands, performs the fifteen basic one-step-sparring sequences for the regular (or short) Surujin. For these Kumite exercises, he has made a practice Surujin out of rope with a wooden Tanto on one end and a tennis ball on the other. Go for more information to:

Did you make the surujin with tenis ball? Wow that looks good. I never think about that. It is easy to make?

Drill a hole through the tennis ball and then tie a knot on both sides so that the ball does not slide. I also added small round discs on both sides so that the knot can't go into the ball.

Now this is good!!! I like the use of the 'Monochi' ( handle baton part ), on the other side of the 'Suruchin/Surujin'. But to reiterate, the length of the flail chain. Is measured again, by the practitioner's extended arm length?! Please elaborate for me, thank you. Osu ( Respect )

When you hold the stabbing end in one hand and with the other hand holding the end with the weight, the chain or rope should be tight when the arms are maximally extended.
