Hey I’m new to Geomatics field, what sort of jobs does one look for to do this type of work?

Greetings from a surveyor from Russia! We have different languages, different governments, different views, I personally don’t care about it. But geodesy is the same for everyone and it is wonderful.

I'm a semi-retired Geologist in Georgia, but I enjoyed working as a Land Survey Assistant a few years ago, for about five months. I enjoy working outdoors and I needed something "close by" because my first wife's health was going downhill. I had taken several college courses in Surveying and Geologic Mapping and I had used ("old school") Plane Table and Alidade for producing a topographic base for my Master's Thesis geologic map in New Mexico. During my interview, the Supervisor admitted that I wasn't a "perfect match", but he gave me a chance. After a few weeks, he liked me because unlike the "young guys" (I was 61), I showed up on time (at 7 AM) or early; I only took 20 minutes for lunch; and I didn't have to stop every 20 minutes to smoke. Sadly, I had to give it up because I hurt my back at home and because my wife was in her final weeks. I wish I had done more of this work when I was 25 - 30 instead of 61. So it goes. On one of the places we surveyed, I went back a few days later to do some Nature Photography along a nearby creek and I found a dead body in the creek. (Yikes!) The local police determined that he was a local homeless alcoholic - in his mid-30s - who died of Hypothermia in the woods (it was a very cold November). It was very creepy, but at least I helped his family get closure (he was only 2 miles from his parents' home and one of my cousins knew his parents).

Land Surveyors are definitely a certain breed of individual. It's not for everyone and that's my job security.

Hey im a young man looking into being a surveyor can you tell me a little bit about how long it takes to get started.
@WavyJayZ11 ай бұрын
Takes about 2 weeks to get into, takes about a month or two to actual understand what's going on. Not a physically demanding job, but a very mentally demanding job.

Is it true that most surveyors use inexact measurements for distance because of a method called 'pacing' [relying on footsteps]?
@ryandroll3869 Жыл бұрын
A surveyor never relies on pacing as a way to measure a distance accurately. He/she may pace distances off in order to get an idea of about where they need to be. Pacing is only to be used for very rough estimates. For example, if you want to know the distance from you to a tree, you might pace it off just to get an idea of the distance, but it's certainly not very accurate.
