Great video. One comment about knives: Experience in the backcountry has taught me that smaller blades perform better. A good blade of 3.5 to 4 inches is all that's really needed. No need for a longer blade to split logs with in a survival situation. It dulls and wastes too many needed calories doing that. Any log under 5" diameter will burn without being split anyway. I've found that the RAT-3 Knife is about as close to ideal as I'm ever going to get for an all-around outdoor wilderness knife.

Thanks! as the pack stands w/ the contents I show in these videos, it weights between 20 and 21 pounds. To many, that may be bit heavy, but I don't mind the weight vs the amount of gear. I appreciate you watching, please watch for parts 2,3 4?

Great video. Great pack. My problem has been security where I park in a Metro parking garage all week. My car has an open hatchback area so no place to hide a BOB....but since it's black carpet, I can tuck a black pack in the very back..then cover flat with a black fleece blanket..and it's hardly visible even if you look directly into the windows. Great info!! Many things I'd not thought of for my bag!

I am sure that there are better knives out there, and I am sure that different people will weight in with good suggestions of their own that differ from mine, but I have used many knives over the years, and my USMC style Ka Bar has never disappointed me. Take Care!

I just picked up this same bag at a gun show today for $35 in coyote/tan brand new. I wanted OD, but the tan was all the dealer had left. For that price, I can't complain. It's one hell of a bag. For interested parties, it's the UTG Combat Featured Load Carrying Web Pack, and it's available at several websites for around $65. Leapers also makes one just like it.

sweet thanks. I am looking into the voodoo tactical medium pack for just a 3 day total weapon and personal support pack. so that i can bug out in the woods behind my place and then fight back in. I think we maybe a bit on different levels (as far as what we are preping for) but the info is all good and the same. thanks again and great vid.

It really comes down to personal preference. Some don't like hatchets b/c they add extra weight. I prefer the large fixed blade b/c I can do the same things that a hatchet can do and more. I own a machete but I don't carry it much. The Kukuri is a good tool too but it is limited in its uses more than a large blade survival knife. My humble recommendation is: start with the large blade first and practice using it for different types of chores, then decide what others you feel you need to add.

to get the zippers to work smoothly you need to apply a silicone spray lubricant in aerosol (fe Novatio H1, Floplast, 3M, Permatex, etc ) . The silicone spray also has the benefit of making the zippers more waterresistant.. Nice vid, thanks

Love my BHI Strike Cyclone. Like yours, I can stick smaller pouches anywhere thus increasing the overall cu. in. storage in easy on-off configurations. Agree 100 % with your 'living pack' philosophy. Don't know if you've ever been where shots have been fired in anger, but because of the professionalism of all your vids, I'd trust you on my six. (beeswax on the zippers helps them glide easy, even with stiff 1000-D nylon packcloth). Pro Deo, Pro Patria.

I do. However, some firearms are carried for self-defense and some for survival applications. While these can be one in the same, a "larger caliber" handgun would be on my belt while a small caliber (22lr) pistol may ride in my pack for small game hunting. If I lost my carry gun, the target 22 pistol could be an emergency backup.22 ammo is very light and so a decent supply can be easily carried in a backpack. Note:I would only use a 22lr in a self defense situation if that were my only option.

20lbs isnt bad. I am in the process of getting my primary BOB down to about that. My vehicle or GHB is about 18lbs right now, but it also has a wool blanket attached to it.

Sure, I can't see why not. As I show in the video, I also use a hydration bladder with this setup sometimes too. It works with the suspenders w/ no problem and depending on the model, stays high above the butt pack. It should work for you. Good luck.

Here are a few suggestions. I carry one pair of wool socks and one pair of Gortex Waterproof socks, since our feet have to carry us. Your first aid kit might include: Moleskin, Oil of Oregano, kaopectate, Sam Splint, Vasoline, Vicks Vaporub, Oscillococcinum Flu Remedy.

Looks like you will be doing some "wise" investing! Actually, I am finishing a video on my new multi-tool and will upload it this week. Mine is the Leatherman Surge. I will address all the specifics in the vid but for a multi-tool, unconditionally, I recommend a Leatherman. Mine is a larger tool and therefor has a larger blade attached which can do the work you speak of. The hatchet vs. the fixed blade survival knife is an ongoing controversy...

I see several lights, heavy gear, fuel tabs, knife sharpener, fishing gear. If this is a short term kit it is better to go lighter. I agree quick energy cliff bars but not taking a cooking system (heat taps, metal canteen cup) or items that have almost no chance of being needed in such a short period of time. Lighter is quicker. Just what you need to get to a better place. Think day pack, water bottle, energy bars, cloths to put on - dry/warm, defense, navigation, comfortable boots/socks.

If you want just one knife as a general purpose knife, I would humbly recommend a USMC Ka-Bar. I make this recommendation for several reasons. Price, Quality, Availability, and a proven track record. At a price under $50, you will have a knife that if taken care of will last a lifetime and can do most chores with ease (with exception of heavy chopping). Check into the latest design with the rubber handle and the kydex sheath. This would be a sure performer. continued...

I guess to answer your question correctly, I would have to ask how you plan to use your new blade. The key is to match the knife to the type of work you will use it for. Also, if price is a consideration, that can make a difference too. There are many grades of fixed blades out there so you can get good quality to great quality knives depending on the price range. Send me a bit more info, and I will be glad to make a humble suggestion. Thanks for your interest and support!

This is a very nice bag but is also expensive. I would look at civilian internal frame backpack . Not as durable (it wont last you 15 years) but not as heavy and it is something you can use for backpacking /camping. I would not get a canteen but rather get a bottle of gaderade or power aid. Just save the bottle after you drink it. Forget small flash lights /pen lights get a headlamp more versital and cost less than many other types of lights.

LED flashlight brighter than penlight or maglight with incandesent bulb and longer battery life. Worth carrying a spare flashlight. You can use a rock to sharpen your knife. Can opener not needed some cans are quick open. Only a pocket knife needed for opening pouches mini scissors, combat knife and multi tool are heavy. 2 Bic lighters lighter than fire starter and matches.GI canteen makes water taste bad use a stainless water bottle or Nalgeen bottle. What state you from I am from Pa.

@dandotreillydot42058 I've spent the last 4 years of my life going outdoors on either hiking trips, hunting trips, canoe journeys or just general trips to get outdoors. Now, if there is one thing you can't be sure of, it is that the government/search services cannot be relied on, all the time. The reason a bag like this is constructed, is for the situation that by the off chance, emergency services are either overwhelmed with other people, or you are in-accessible. A bag like this saves lives.

have you or anyone else watching/reading this looked into the Multicam camouflage pattern? It is the closest thing to the active camouflage technology from the Metal Gear Solid 4 video game. I wont buy any kind of SHTF gear unless it's in multicam. It's way better than woodland camo at blending with your surroundings. It's pretty expensive compared to other patterns but it is way way way cool.
