I know you boys aren't basket weavers by trade, though this is a great show, but I'd like to suggest drying your materials, then soaking them until pliable. This ensures that you do not get any breakage and that it's more likely you won't get mold, etc. Hope that's helpful to someone :)

Hey Josh, I love the design and its ability to be used not only as a trap but a pack as well. Awesome job! One thing Ive noticed on weaving vids is the starter row is called twining because they almost invariably us twin to start the weave. If you have a little extra paracord or bankline you might want to use it for the first 5 or so wraps then go to the vines. Thats not criticism by any means, just an observation. Again, great job brother!

I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but the same basket making technique could be easily used to make hanging gardens. If you live in an area where wildlife regularly eat up your edibles, this could be used to ensure you have a steady source of root vegetables that isn't being pillaged by hogs, bears, deer, etc.

we have sandbar willow here. i think an easy way to make a backet is make a big willow ,wreath, lay it on the ground, shove five or seven spoke through the wreath into the ground and work my basket from fat to thin at the top, then pull the whole thing out of the ground and make the funnel for the fish. sounds super fast and effective. would you guys give this method a try and see how it works? ill try it too and post the results :D
@jeffmoestaygyi.12488 жыл бұрын
im making videos testing these, have you guys ever tried putting a trap door on these with weaved vines and a makeshift hinge rock weight or maybe a catail leaf throat trapping them in? im trying different desighs like this.
@annparis49818 жыл бұрын
yes these work flawlessly. pioneers use to put them under small waterfalls. These work like a funnel. As the fish swim, if one swims into the large end, the funnel herds the fish from the larger end through the smaller end, and into the reservoir. Once the fish swim down the funnel into the reservoir, the fish cant line themselves straight enough to swim back out. Small fish can swim out, large fish cannot. Cut the top of a plastic water bottle, invert it and put it back into the bottle. put it into a shallow lake and in an hour it will be filled with minnows you can use for bait. Also, if I'm lost in the wilderness by a stream or body of water, the last thing on my mind will be the fishing laws. In fact I would HOPE and PRAY some forest ranger stumbled across me. I'd welcome the citation!
@evolutionaryprepping44146 жыл бұрын
I have tried the basket trap and I do think it is an effective fish trap but there is one the tops them all in my opinion which is the gill net. The cons of a gill net is that it takes a lot of cordage to make one and you need different sizes for different sized fish. The pros of a gill net is that you can deploy it it a lake, river, or an ocean, you can feed a very large population with just one (depending on the length and the size of fish), if you can't catch fish you can always put it high up in the air to catch birds, it does not require bait, and it does not take a lot of knowledge to make one. (You only need to know how to make an overhand knot and a cow hitch.)

In many areas fishing w/o a licence is illegal unless it's not only primitive,but usually things like can-n-line.Many places you'd get in trouble if ya got caught using a trap,unless it's for crabs (which in both ME and FL you can have 5. If you're not surviving for kicks though, I'd say that's where the OTHER skills you're school teaches eh?I'm in FL and would LOVE to do some SERE type survival training. you should probably promote knife safety when doing any survival situation that would involve the use of a knife. always cut away, never cut towards yourself. i saw you cutting that skinny limb off but you quickly changed direction. i do not know if you knew that and corrected yourself or maybe it was blind luck that you switched direction.

@glidershower9 жыл бұрын
Simple: to them, the hole magically disappears once they are in. And even if a few smart ones try to swim out, thanks to the inverted barbs which allows them to get in easily but hurts them if they try to get out, they desist. Check out how an Indian fish trap works. It's the same concept.

if you want to know what REALLY works, for hunting or fishing for survival, get your state's fish and game laws/regs and do what they make illegal. It's almost always illegal cause it WORKS, really well. Like silencers, jacklighting, fish poison, baiting, etc.

You don't need an uneven number of spokes.. You can just weave it like this guy does: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Oklpd9iLqWqNE Also more fish will enter if more light does. so if you makes the weave less dense you will catch more fish as long as the fish can't get through. Maybe you're trying to catch itty bitty fish that can get through a 1 inch hole, but if you're not you shouldn't weave it that dense.. Just my two cents
@sigma3survivalschool6 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with that assessment. But you need the right kind of material to do those looser weaves. And I don't think it could be accomplished with what we have around. Unless it was done much smaller with willow branches.
