To net that many small fish in such a short time tells me it's a great feeding ground for some very large Bass. Great vid.

I remember my Dad taking me and my brothers down to the beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in the early 1970's, to pull in a net, similar to this one, but, probably 300 or 400 yards long. The net was cast far out off the beach by two boats and we'd pull it in from shore. It was probably equivalent to strip fishing, as it swept everything in its path to shore. It was part of our local fishing culture and I remember Dad telling us the names of all the different species of marine life hauled to shore. I learned much and Dad was an experienced sailor and Merchant Marine Veteran. This video has triggered a memory which had laid dormant in me for 40 years! I don't know if the practice has been outlawed but, it's cool to see you do this strictly as a last means method of survival. Thanks, bud. I will sub you and continue to watch more of your vids.

re Jack S You are talking about pulling a beach seine, very different net from a gill net, and still legal in many places.

Was hoping you were going to mention the effectiveness of a gill net at trapping birds. With one that size you can get birds as large as pigeons with it. Much larger and they'll just tear through. But definitely a good source of food when the only other choice is starvation. Great video, Bob.

Did a bit of bird netting when I worked as an Avian Technician shortly after earning my degree in Biology. Useful in field studies and bird banding... and the crossover into survival can as you say be a life saver.

Bob, I once came across scientist working in the woods. They had a very fine black colored net stretched out and were catching birds. They were doing something to them and then releasing them unharmed. That said, once the gill net is used to catch fish couldn't you stretch the broken net out in the bushed to capture doves and other birds for survival food?
@NisargChaudhari

catching birds and/or eggs is illegal. those scientists have permits for catching and studying/banding birds. the net used is usually called a mist-net

I have a lot of quail on my property in New Mexico. Unfortunately NO water. Do you have a preferred technique for trapping ground birds such as quail or doves? In a survival situation I'm not sure using my ammo on food will be wise. Thanks! Love your videos.
@BobHansler
@BobHansler 7 жыл бұрын
Birds are a tricky quandary. There are a number of traps that could be used, but the effort and questionable returns make birds such as quail a prey of chance. If you had a gill net you could chop it up into smaller sections and place it along quail runs if surviving. Personally, I would spend my time setting deadfalls and snares that are unlikely to capture a bird... I have in the past and would fashion a few throwing sticks though to have ready as I build and check the traps as the occasional rabbit and quail can be had on occasion, might as well if you are already going to be expending the energy to check traps.

Ehhh, I have mixed emotions. O use a spearpole or have in the past and keep one on hand most days on the boat. I have used a bow a fw times but ended up giving the rig to a friend after a while. I dont mind the sport fishermen shooting the carp and incvasive species, but the gar are suffering from overfishing. The giants are decades old and should be protected more... at least in this area, there wont be any of the old fish left for my grand kids to see.

@@BobHansler I know they're not real fish as most people would define them, they're crustaceans, I only meant tgat they're fish in the sense that they have gills, and they live and breathe under water, and I think you meant that coconuts aren't technically nuts, they're one seeded drupes, although if you play fast and loose with the definitions, you could consider them nuts, but botanists don't. Cocoa or cacao beans are a horse of another color, however, they're completely different.
