A basic kit for hunting survival items meant to increase the options and probability of procuring meat in a survival scenario. This kit can be broken down into smaller elements to accommodate specific environments. Every day or easily found items can be what makes the difference in survival. What is more; the every day items are cheap and replaceable compared to expensive items. Improvisation using some basic equipment and simple techniques often produce more than complicated or manufactured items. This kit contains possible items for small kits for the survivalist. Additions can always be made depending on the situation. Items:
Hooks
Sinkers
Swivels
Corks/Bobbers
Snare Wire
Nails
Cargo Tape
Zip Ties
Cordage
fishing line
Sling Shot and Pocket
Treble hooks
Bait
Container

When i was very young , granny made me a burlap potato sack into a cross body bag , grandpa, cut down old tobacco tins , to store my fishing hooks in , the big 1 pound tobacco cans kept matches and what i needed to keep dry , carried a small can of carbide ,for my carbide lights ,22 ammo shorts longs ,long rifle, in different sizes cut down tobacco tins . Dad made me a cut down stalk for the 22 I carried, grandpa measured my arms and made me a handle for my double bit axe , I stayed in the woods more than most grown-ups did . Ate what I cought and killed . Sometimes id have to stash my game near a road , and call for help something else id carry was , shelled dry corn.

There is something missing. Either a piece of briteish cloth which you can turn into bait among other things, or a ziplock. Both are useful, but serve as a liner for this- pull the kit items out and keep them together when you're using the mess kit as a kit. I know you want it as a hunting kit, but spare bic is like a dyeing rich uncle- always welcome on your door step, particularly when you least expect it.

Snares The Idea of using light gauge picture wire never occurred to me. Good Especially in Smaller or Micro Kits. With wire this thin you don’t need to cut. Flex a few times and metal fatigue will break it. Nice and compact but is it strong enough. Squirrels and smaller maybe it’s enough. Rabbits it would be close. Anything that is bigger. Doubtful I like Steel fishing leaders. Most premade ones have a swivel at one end to use as a anchor line tie off. Because of the ability to rotate there is less damage from the games struggles and may be used more than once. Have a snap at the other to clip around the wire as the slider. It might be a bit large to put in the sewing kit, but not the hunting kit. The reason old time kits used brass wire. It is soft enough to manipulate with just the fingers as this was before Multi-tools. Just remember when trapping you will need at least a dozen set to have a reasonable chance of success. Single set just not good enough.

Surgical rubber tubing. About 5 or 6 feet. Many uses. Spring for traps. Rubber for the Ron Hood Delbow. As a replacement for initial sling shot power bands. And since it is a tube a fire blow pipe. No butt in the air and face in the dirt and a concentrated stream of air to encouraging your fire. Saw blade I Saw a kit builder wrap a 24” bow saw blade inside an Altoid kit. Your pot kit would hold one nicely. Put some kind of edge guard on it. It could cut branches to form a bow saw frame for more serious cutting.

My old kit had several guitar strings for snares. There is a ‘grommet’ at one end that can be made into the loop. Like the way you carry your fish hooks. I usually added some fly fishing flies (good for perch where I live).

Cork charcoal (black only) can also be rubbed into wounds to help prevent infection. Not talking about deep eviscerated injuries but more superficial & even fairly deep into muscle wounds without obvious major blood vessel involvement. Think linear barbed wire lacerations & similar. Great vid presentation again! Thank you, as always.

Can it be made with other charcoal, or just it be cork? Thanks.
@kellymoulton3792
@kellymoulton3792 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jaybird196 Any black charcoal can be used, cork is just very easy to work with as it chars into almost exclusively black charcoal. Also, cork is pretty easy to char, rather like cooking a marshmallow, on a stick held over flames. Just make sure you are ONLY using black charcoal whether you are using it for external wound applications or orally as an anti-poison remedy.

More on fishing You fish hook sachets are ideal for in pocket use. You need the extra protection from the points. When inside a kit it is not as necessary. In that case you could with Ron Hood’s idea. Place the hooks at right angles to the edges of masking tape. It can be then wrapped around objects or rolled up. I have taken the concept another step. While it is true small hooks can catch big fish it is better to use appropriate size for the fish at your location. To accomplish this I start with the largest hook chosen. The nest progressively smaller hooks inside. Especially in smaller kits you are talking about maybe a half dozen small split shot sinkers. Beyond that both the Weight and bulk become intolerable. A smaller H can be wrapped with yards of magnet wire for the same amount of weight. The size is in the 32 to 36 gauge range. With this dozens of sinkers can be manufactured on site from stones. Stones to big, a little judicious banging between larger rocks you can make the size needed. Take the selected stone in the center of a short piece of wire. Bring the two lengths up both side and twist at the top1/2 to a twist and a half turns. Reverse direction splitting the difference between the first two and twist again. You now have a a four sided cage holding the weight. With the tag ends loop in opposite directions forming a double eye for attaching the fishing line twist once more. Before trimming the wire ends they can be slipped under the cage wires for a more solid anchor tie. You could form the sinker cage with any fine cordage. The problem with most is they are slippery. Tying the necessary knots is fiddly and frustrating. The inherent stiffness if the magnet wire while slight allows twisting rather than tying. This is much simpler and quicker. These weights can be used for gill nets, cast nets and trotlines. I have actually woven a four foot cast net for my BOB level kit. I used Spiderwire line for strength and lightness. It packs to about the size of a deck of cards. I prefer the new super lines such as spiderwire or one of the others. The same size as common 10 pound test but is in the 50 to 60 pound range. Light tackle is fine for sport fishing. The lost because of a broken line means better luck next time. During a survival situation it means hunger.

Pocket Bolo Here's an idea for a complementary weapon to the sling. A compact kit size Bolo. Most people would say how do you carry something as bulky and heavy as a bolo. Normally an effective bolo would be between 1 1/2 to 3 pounds. But here’s a way to carry one or just a couple of ounces. First make 3 drawstring type pouches about the size of a fist. Use 3' or more of 550 paracord as the drawstring for each bag. Tie a small loop [A bowline is the best for this] in one end and run the other end thru it. Then tie a knot in the middle at the bowline. You now have the basic kit bolo. To pack in your kit tuck each length of cord into its own bag up to the central knot. This is to minimize tangling of the cords. Then tuck 2 of the bags into the third bag. This gives you a nice compact package ready to tuck into a corner of your kit until it's needed. If you have a sling [Think David Versus Goliath] It can easily be tucked in the pouch also. You are now in the field and ready to use your bolo. It is time to add the weight needed to make this primitive weapon effective. Open the bags and fill them with material at hand. This can be sand, dirt, stones, and even packed snow or ice. Once loaded your bolo is now ready for the hunt. Another way is you want to make a fully weighted one is if you have access to ocean fishing gear. They make large lead sinkers for deep-sea fishing. Take an 8 oz. to 1 lb. lead weight. Drill a hole [much easier to drill than a ball bearing that has been suggested] that will accommodate the cord you want to use. Chamfer the edges to minimize cord wear. Then just tie knots above and below the weight. Although the idea of the pocket kit bolo is so you don't have the weight to carry before it is needed. The empty pouch idea that you fill with local material to add weight has other applications. Another example would be a cast net in your BOB. Why carry several pounds of lead weight on your back when it could be replaced with a few ounces of material. Then if you are in need of this efficient fishing tool just fill the pouches with local rock, sand etc. A gill net can be rigged the same way at the bottom. Then use sticks at the top for floats. Hey I got a bad back saving weight is critical. So I look for ways to reduce weight. But I still want the best equipment to enhance my chances. The bolo can effectively kill small game as is. For larger game it is used to entangle the legs allowing you to get close enough to use clubs, spears, or rocks to dispatch you game. It's now dinnertime. The one drawback to a bolo is that it is not very good in brush or trees. In open areas it gives you a range weapon that covers a target area about 6' across. As with any weapon it does require practice to be use well. Because of it's nature even urban dwellers can practice [play] with it in a public park. If the bags are filled with soft sand you can explain to the local gendarme that it's just a game while sharpening your skills How to throw a Bolo. The easiest way to throw a three-string bolo is to hold 1 ball in the off hand. Grasp the central knot in the throwing hand. Start twirling at about a 45-degree angle. As it comes up to speed let the line slide through your fingers untill you are holding the third ball in the throwing hand. All the while you are sighting on the target. Raise the throwing hand quickly above your head. This brings the spin of the bolo horizontal disk. Release on target. This entire process takes less time than reading it. Usually it only takes 3 or 4 spins from start to finish. Many more and you are wasting time and energy. Although you can spin a few extra times in it is necessary to wait for a moving target to clear an obstruction.

How i remember how to say cache (a bundle of things) is because it is a stash, so you say it that way, cash the e is silent. Cache' meaning they have a certain style is pronounced (cash shay). To sashay means to swing your butt from side to side as you walk. You can blame it on my aunt who beat into my head she would not tolerate sloppy thinking or talking. Your style makes it easy to understand the material keep up the good work.

Thank you, I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy! You are the only other person besides myself that I've seen that puts treble hooks in our hunting and trap kit. They can be such a great asset for not only fishing, but also for use on animals in traps and snares. I keep a few different sizes in my kit. You can of course catch animals in the mouth like a fish with smaller "bite sized" ones, but larger treble hooks can also be used to snag a small animal by it's skin. One great way to use them is to set a few up with snare wire or cordage at a choke point of a rabbit trail. Then you can just wait and see if a rabbit hooks itself just like if it were to get caught in a regular passive snare. Or if you are at a field, thicket, or something like that where you know the rabbits are likely hiding, you can set the hooks up on their escape trails and then "beat the brush" to scare them and heard or drive them to run down the trail and hopefully get hooked. I know it's not exactly the most humane way to catch an animal and should only be used in a real and true survival situation. However when in a real survival situation you gotta do what you gotta do. I was just so glad to see you mention them because it seems like nobody ever brings them up for use on animals and they can most definitely be just as useful for hunting as they are with fishing in a true survival situation.

I've kept a emergency kit just for hunting trips, I use the WW1 US mess kit, it's what I first learned on, it's very flat per say . Also I'd like to mention, I also grew up with a sling shot, it makes a great improvised turniquek. As far as hooks, use long shanked single barbed hooks= they can be straightened to make a gig. If you research Pana, I think I spelled it right, but it's a type of sling shot, you'll see the importance of 16 penny nails and what can be done with them and why you should carry them. Actually you'd do a great video on that, it's a deadly, accurate improvised weapon. Thanks for all you've done and continue to do for everyone. Wish I could figure out GoPro , uploading videos I'd do it myself.

I might suggest taking the treble hook part of it out there, there are some sick people that don't care if its survival, we don't need to be giving them ideas. for anyone who has decency that would clearly be a survival situation only, not everyone takes it that way

I like your system with the cargo tape with pins, hooks, etc. You should include a couple of needles already threaded, ready to sew with in case you need to repair your clothes or stitch yourself up. I’ve had to put crazy glue on a deep cut and boy did that make me holler. 😮. It might have hurt less if I had sewn myself up. Thank you for making me think. I’d love to see some videos of you teaching how to set snares and traps. I know how to make a fishing rod and how to fish. I’ve been fishing since I was a toddler. I know how to shoot a gun and hunt. My dad taught me but he never showed me how to set snares and traps.

Nice. I carry pre-configured snares, as well as pre-configured fishing gear (hook, wire leader, swivel. and crimp weights), and a 4-prong spear(fishing) head. This way I won't have to bother with improvising something.

Treble hook storage Many relatively small products come in those frustrating plastic packs. This is then simply trashed. What a waste. I developed a use for some in my own fishing kit for items such items as treble hooks and lures. The tube can be made to any size within the limits of the back panel of the largest packet you have. If you absolutely have a need a larger tube you would need to purchase a sheet of similar plastic. Roll the plastic into a tube and glue the edge. Then glue a circle of the same stuff to one end. Trim the circle flush after the glue is set. Make a short tube that is a snug fit to the tube as a cap for the open end. Made snug enough it should be reasonable water resistant container. Great storage for trebe hooks, small screw eyes and screw in L bracket for rod construction. A second use it could be cut into an H Shape. While it would hold as much line as your cardboard one it would be more compact and lighter. Folded and taped it can act as an edge protector. Similar to the cardboard sheaths manufactures ship knives in. With judicious application of heat plastic can be folded into boxes. The applications are only limited by imagination.

Major Andrew, you should have some regular rubber bands in there too00OO^!!^ I like to have a few Rubber Bands in My Predator Kit because they are excellent Worm Bait & Frog Legs. Also they can be Tied on the Fly to make Perfect Grub Bait. 2 Other things I have in My Predator Kit is a couple mini Clothes Pins and the Steel Soup Can Tabs(not the Aluminum Pop Tabs). Thanks for another great Vid Bud^!!^
