A little suggestion, sort of a stress test, sort of a "Good to know" thing... but you should try lifting the main body of the goose (No trailer) and the trailer itself with your new lifter craft. (I'm partial to the Ox, the Mule, or maybe the Hercules if we're not doing animal names). That way you'll know in advance if you can right the goose should you have any unfortunate accidents with it in the future.

Redesign: Lifting thrust in the center, landing gear on extendable or fold-out legs on the corner. Name: the Spider. Also: *spends several episodes designing, digging out, and building a place to park the Goose* *parks Goose at hangar entrance like usual*

If landing gear on fold out legs wasn't such a terrifying idea for something designed to pick up loose pieces of salvage, yep that'd be fun :P Also: :D

Please... Raise the lift thrusters up more.. Maybe make slightly inclined arms up from the body to the thrusters. Also, when are you ever gonna finish the bridge to the bunker? Lol. I'd give it a little more style with some slopes and maybe some "support beams_
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
The bridge is going to have so much style it'll make the rest of the base look out of date ;) Or at least it will get some eventually, got a few other things to use my iron stores on first, also the thrusters are totally getting lifted, at least a little bit :)
@demize74986 жыл бұрын
Splitsie if I recall, you need 4 blocks high from the tail of the thruster. Also, I'd recommend at least a single small thruster facing down while you don't have a load. Instead if jetting straight up when you're empty.
@mattp13376 жыл бұрын
An alternate approach for a salvage design: I would've put the vertical thrusters in the center, then arrayed landing gear grabbers away from the center and possible thruster damage. So, it would be a "T" or "X" or "+" shape overall. But perhaps an ideal salvage design would be more like a dumpster-lifting garbage truck: grab things at the front, then lift them over and drop them into a rear flatbed enclosure. That way you're not limited by number of items = number of landing gear. Thumbs up on these name suggestions: Corvid/Crow/Raven/Magpie, Carrion, Crane.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
That would certainly work, going for a cross based design. I'm not sure why I went with a doughnut but here we are :P

Just spent the past few weeks binge watching this series to get up to this point... I'm really enjoying it! Thanks for sharing your game with us. I really like the hybrid concept of survival with an emphasis on actually making things look good. You should consider changing the corners around the grinder pit to the yellow orange color. I think it would be much more cohesive ;)

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it :) At the moment it'll look better but once I put the fencing in I think it'll end up looking a little funny as I'm planning on having diagonal fences there - with all the colour on the outside as well as inside I don't think it'll quite work, though I'll show both to see what everyone thinks when I do it :)

+1... one precious thing of cargo grilled and nothing done to fix that... When he started, i thought Splitsie would stick that lift in the middle and mount it high... that would fit the perversity of the design... but noo, kill that space with gyros xD. With VTOL script fixed,he could also have saved on horizontal thrusters..
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
I wanted to avoid the vector thrust on this design due to the very fine control often needed to grab some pieces and that's a little bit more difficult with vector thrust. As to lifting the thrusters, I really should have done that :P
@vladimirljubopytnov51936 жыл бұрын
aah... ok... it looks you have quite a control with the welder ship :). Would it help to have weak thrust in all directions and main lift thrust VTOLed? It is true that fixed lift at least makes line of thruster damage ... a line, not an area :)
@madmann2256 жыл бұрын
Hey splitsie, Im not sure you know this but I just discovered that if you have nothing in your hands and have a control panel targeted, while in spectator mode you can right click to access the control panel for the grid you are on. It makes it very easy to work on pistons and other fiddly stuff like that. I accidentally found it out when I was working on my elevator. Was to nice to be able to control the different lengths while in spectator mode to line them up the way I wanted. But as always. Great work. :)

I've done it by accident a number of times myself, the other thing I like to do is to use the build vision menu while in spectator cam. I set up most of the hangar drilling guide projections that way and it saves sooo much time :)
@wholleyseasons32966 жыл бұрын
Two little things/comments: 1. Either move the landing gear (all lower a bit) or those vertical thrusters up or out a bit. 2. If I remember correctly you set up the pit the way you did so you could just drop salvage in the top and the grinder wall would push forward the salvage until the grinders reached the limit of the pistons. Right now your always flying into the pit (possibly damaging your ship or banging salvage into the door area when you enter). It seems to me you should let the machine do the work you created it for.
@mattp13376 жыл бұрын
I agree. Well worth the potential minor losses from the drop. If he scripted the doors to not open until the grinders had completely retracted, you could even start piling up the next load of salvage on them while a grind is in progress.
@wholleyseasons32966 жыл бұрын
The problem while grinding is in progress is that currently shut off when they get out of the sensor range, also the material being ground is still flying about in the space between the grinders and wall (some as seen in the vid) even gets behind the wall. you'd be possibility damaging things outside the pit. if you were to dump salvage on the hatch (with it closed) then you could damage the structure of the hatch, even possibility jamming it.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Sadly the machine can't really do what I designed it to, the wall tends to get stuck while pushing smaller pieces of salvage in which is why I keep flying all the way in :( I'm hoping to come up with a better system to replace it that'll actually function properly with simply dumped parts since it would save a lot of time and effort in the long run

For a salvager, is better if you borrow from the design of your sandbags: place the landing legs in a X, a bit Further away from your ships. You might need a larger access tunnel, that's why is a good idea to make the grinder somewhere outside the base.
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
I was happy to leave them closer to each other as I'd have difficulty flying with multiple loads large enough to need them further apart anyway. Also, having the grinder inside was a purely aesthetic decision (though maybe also for a bit of fun to see if I could make it work ok that way) :P
@samueldiehl55066 жыл бұрын
I would strongly suggest that instead of having a hollow middle, the new ship should have its lifting thrusters in the middle. There would probably be enough room for 1 large and maybe 3 small thrusters which would probably be enough. I think it would look better and it would prevent accidental salvage cooking. Anyway, great episode as always!

I think that the Bowerbird looks great. Each time you return to the base with a load of junk I think two things. Firstly, move the Goose to make getting in and out smoother. I am convinced that you are going to smash into it at some stage. Secondly, with all the maneuvering to get in and out to the grinder pit, I still can't figure out why you didn't build the pit out the front as an extension to the entrance platform, using sloped sides to form a funnel and Grinders pointing up, so you could just fly over and drop the junk straight in. Yes, your pit looks super cool, but a bit impractical and time consuming to use.
@JohnDoe-rl9pp6 жыл бұрын
Or at the very least, build a flatbed trailer he can dump the junk on, and haul it under the mountain that way. Flying through tight tunnels and literally inside the grinder chamber is just kinda weird.

When he gets another load of iron, he'll be able to finish of The Goose's turntable parking chamber and it'll be out of the way.

The drop pit has a couple of downsides with parts flying all over the place and bits getting stuck between the grinders, sadly this attempt has only worked out slightly better. I'm working on a testing video for different grinder pit designs and if I get a nice design idea out of that I'll do a build montage and replace the current one so I can just drop and run for the next parts - which is what was supposed to be able to happen... but then I kept seeing the grinder wall getting stuck :( As to the Goose, I didn't want to park it in the dark and I've been lazy and stealing its connector for the buttercup lately, but the next iron mining trip will see the goose have a proper space to park and keep it out of the way :)

@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Yep, but then I can't unlock and lock them independently. As an example: if I pick up a piece of loot at an awkward due to the way it was resting, then want to place it down and pick it up with a better angle I'd drop everything else to do that
@wolf81au6 жыл бұрын
I've made several salvage "drones" in my game which you control remotely until you get to the salvage point to pick up the scrap, then Ascend to a specific height and have it fly automatically on a set of GPS points all the way back to base and drop the load off in an automated grinder machine. Then the drone simply goes back to the docking point and locks to a connector and switches the engine off. Took me a while to get it right with tweaking the timing etc but well worth it.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like something potentially painful to setup, I've been having nothing but grief when playing with the autopilot recently which is one of the reasons I've avoided it in this playthrough so far. The other reason is power usage, the autopilot is a very power inefficient way to move around so while I'm still handicapping myself with sticking to solar they are probably not the best way to go :(
@wolf81au6 жыл бұрын
After much tweaking I found a means which worked for me. I do have collision avoidance turned on as a safe guard up until just before the docking sequence but find it typically poor to use. To avoid the need for it, once I have the scrap picked up, I fly it straight up to a fair height to attempt to get clear line of sight to the waypoint to my base which is also very high above the base. That way it tends to not have to avoid any surfaces and goes straight back home. I tried to minimise the weight as much as possible as it only has the one primary function and no need for an on-board pilot and has more than enough juice to do what is required. Once it drops off the scrap and docks, it then connects up to the base to recharge while it has everything but the remote switched off. I found it useful especially in the early game when I was desperate for Uranium and it was gathering the random parachute drops which helped power my base and compliment the solar panels.
@jaymiddleton7726 жыл бұрын
Suggestion for the turret arming/disarming; Have the salvage ship send a signal to the base, which then relays a signal to the turrets. Then have an auto re-arm timer on the base. Have a receiver on the salvage ship to receive turret status from the base and show it with display/lights. It would also allow the base to have cool light and sound effects for arm/disarm. Honestly, I was hoping the salvage ship would be a front load garbage truck... but the clang would be off the charts

about the thrusters cooking salvage... you could use whiplash's rotor thruster manager to have the lifting thrusters at a 45 degree diagonal, this would increase the distance from thruster to salvage and also allow you to remove the sideways thrusters. rotor thruster manager does *not* turn the rotors, it only controls the thrusters so they obey your movement input.
@mattp13376 жыл бұрын
That script looks REALLY useful to me I've done some experimenting with building ships where the main grid was tilted from the normal orientation (primary motivation was to have hangar doors angled at 45°) but controlling became a nightmare. Either you had to mentally shift your frame of reference, which was near impossible, or build a cockpit-and-thrusters grid which then invites phantom forces and Lord Klang's wrath. An example attempt: imgur.com/a/BYTkl

You should put a sensor at your base that will detect you and turn on all the sandbags, in case you forget to turn them back on. You would have to turn them back off every run, but it's better than leaving your base open to attack while you're building.

Nice episode. Like your new salvager/trash collector. Have you thought about maybe adding a grinder to it in front and a small storage? Since you did cook your salvage on the main thrusters, being able to maybe trim the salvage before pickup would be a good thing. Another option might be to raise the main thrusters up a block or two to avoid it. Would give the ship a higher profile though. Maybe add a sound block to your base as well as the salvager, along with a timer that reactivates the turrets. Have the sound block sound out 10 seconds before activation :) Why is the Goose parked by the entrance? Didn't you make a nice turn table for it to be parked on? Noticed you had to navigate past it on your way in and out of the garage

I might have a fiddle with the design a little and try to move the thrusters when I take another crack at prettying up the armor :) I parked it there when I'd briefly left it outside to get power and haven't put it back inside while the buttercup's been using its connector. I know that this is an older Video. but i am working my way through them. Would not slowing down the speed of the piston on your grinder pit reduce the bounce back of extra pieces. Also have you considered putting large landing gear at the bottom on auto lock. the would stop anything from flying off.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Sadly not, the reason that the pieces fly around at such ridiculous speeds is the force generated by the grinders themselves. There are a few things in SE that produce utterly insane levels of force that you wouldn't expect - grinders are one, the others are drills and missiles. A perfect system would probably try to take advantage of a landing gear, however that takes a lot more work in terms of placing the wreckage down properly, if the grinders approach the wreck from the wrong angle/the wreck has an overhanging piece then you'll still end up with pieces flying since the already locked landing gear can't grab another piece, but it still might reduce the overall number of pieces flying about.

vetol gunship with mini mounted Rudolf x2/x4 depending on size and start clearing out some of your nearer bases to give yourself some breathing room to really work on scavenging or or something i've wanted to do but haven't got a clue if its possible make a turret drone (votol and cheap) designed literally using remotes, sensors and scripts(im assuming) in a cheap mannet where you can easy have 2 or 3 built an functional and use them to ''Follow and protect'' ships that no combat ability or things like the goose? I'd like to do something flying that can assist the sandbags, the big downside of a system like that is the power cost. The base is perfectly capable of running its own systems but when I start flying too many ships around it starts running short so I'll be holding off on any flying defense drones for a little bit :( As to a gunship, it's on the list but I'm feeling pretty good about things at the moment, since the reprieve has given me time to increase the sandbag coverage nicely :)

are there other ways of connection grids for charging, it seems silly to make a connector when you have no cargo?
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Connectors are the easiest in this setting, you can use merge blocks, rotors, and I feel like there's something else that's escaping me, but the downside of those is that the two grids become one and so get renamed on connect and disconnect. Certainly useful in some settings but not usually as practical as a giant connector :P
@SampoPaalanen Жыл бұрын
I know this is quite late but I do wonder if there's a size limit for small grid ships when looking at these designs especially the more complex ones (a hard limit that is not a power/thrust one).
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
By default there are hard limits in place to grid size, but I always turn these off. With the limits removed the main point where you run into troubles depends on PC specs and number of physics interactions but also maximum length between two blocks on the same grid. Which is to say, it's a bit varied but there is a point where the game just stops working properly :P
@thewootpanda6 жыл бұрын
the problem with the grinder pit is there's so many holes that bits and bobs get through. how about a steel floor(bear with me here) if you take out the bottom grinders, slope it so things raise onto the grinders and yeah slope and metal floor might just work no?
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to do some more testing and possibly even do a video of the tests so that I can work out a nice solution to replace the current ones as all those little bits do tend to make things painful :(

Hi Splitsie! I noticed the two large thrusters are off by one block (seeing you wanted the sides to be symmetrical). Also, why not use a bunch of upwards lifting small thrusters to lower the intensity of the bbq you have on the sides? :P Last thing; to make it easier to pick up the junk with the landing gear, you may want to try using pistons to extend each of the landing gear. Great video as always; love your content! Cheers!
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... I will have to check that, especially as I'm going to lift them a little to prevent too much future BBQ :P I tend to avoid pistons on flying vehicles as they always seem to cause phantom forces that spin my vehicle ever so slightly (or not so slightly sometimes)
@MuchGusto6 жыл бұрын
Splitsie I can understand that! I had to give it a few tries on a concept ship before finally removing the spinning. Found a way around it though! In survival it is a bit risky indeed. Thanks for the reply!

You should have built a flying dump truck with a extendable arm on rotors with a landing gear on the end, pick wrecks up n drop in the back of the truck ( I would do this but i'm a bad builder lol )
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
It would be incredibly difficult to do that with a flying vehicle due to the changes in centre of mass with the arm and landing gear - might be doable with a rover though. The main reason not to is that small wrecks take a long time to grind down even with large grid grinders, I manage to get back and forth with the bin chicken before the previous wrecks are gone even with the size of the base one
@markcunningham22436 жыл бұрын
After watching this video and almost the rest of the series I realise this would be hard to do, almost at the end of this series, learn't so much about the game, given me ideas ( tho in practice mine are shabby lol ) gotta say, this is one of the best series i've watched ( i don't mean just SE, other games and genres too ) not sure why, but i have to watch :)

I'm absolutely going to be doing a full redesign of the pit and it may well include an angled element that leads to a straight drop where a piston wall pushes down into the pit. But I want to test some things in creative that may even become a video before I do any big redesign :)

a thing i'd try to avoid cooking salvage with the thrusters i'd try to place the landing gear on pistons, that way it would be possible to regulate the distance between the salvage and thrusters or the downward thrusters on pistons so you can spread them out far enough to not cook anything. but the way pistons have been acting in my game lately i'm prety much sure they'd blow the salvage ship to kingdom come... :D
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
They also have a tendency to make your vehicle tip a bit... I'm going to try to lift the thrusters a little higher to prevent quite so much trouble so hopefully won't have to be too careful with where I grab the salvage in the future :)
@Lobisomen796 жыл бұрын
Splitsie last vehicle i build with pistons, just used them to lift the miner up like Igor, the suspension on the weels went nuts, kicked the vehicle in the air about 10 Blocks high or even more while the pistons were inactive
@macgabhann11086 жыл бұрын
lol I think we have all done that as some point ever so often , at least your ship was not damaging itself such as damaging its own gyro and programming block running an auto pilot script while it was about 30k out, uh oops.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Oooh ouch, that sounds expensive :P
@macgabhann11086 жыл бұрын
i found it with space master then teleported to it then just added those blocks back in in a different spot using space master and deleted what remained of the original pieces so was not to bad , still that was a " well that was stupid moment" as I clearly was not thinking when I placed the thrusters other then keeping it compact and with using a few resources as I could being as it was made mostly from the yellow respawn ship

Haven't got a clear time frame, but the original plan has been to destroy the enemy HQ, then go to space properly :) And the first manned trip to space is almost certainly going to involve the ridiculous use of 'boosters' :P

I seem to be having difficulty differentiating between programmable blocks and timer blocks, I think. Would it be fair to say one is for running user scripts, and the other for functional block sequencing?
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's a reasonable summation. There's a bit more nuance to it, but for most purposes that definition works :)

Hey! Great video again. This ship is so asymmetrical, it is almost hurting my eyes :D but it is interesting. Another thing. You really should finish the bridge outside of the hangar door and put some lights on it. That bridge is only scaffolding since episode 3-5? I don't remember
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
It's been scaffolding a loooong time, my current order of priority for iron use is: grinder bay completion, goose parking bay, then either the refinery room or the bridge and then onto living quarters and such. The list is flexible but that's my rough order for now :)
@themidnightbanshee59275 жыл бұрын
ya know for a futuristic game its lacking armor only light and heavy steel armor think they would at least add composite armor or energy shields and an interesting choice of design
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
From what I understand the armour choice was quite deliberate, due to the way the engine handles armour deformation, they didn't want shields to prevent people from experiencing that and they wanted to keep it metallic so the deformation made some amount of sense to people

Great episode! I do like the design. It grabs the essence of a Space Engineer by the ah... hair yea "hair". Well, ah with that out of the way. I have had a problem with build vision mod not working as long as I have the Text Hud API mod installed. But I see you use build vision all the time. Are you still running the Text Hud API mod along with build vision? Just wondering.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
Build vision requires the Text Hud API mod so I always have both on and haven't run into any troubles, are you using any other mods that take advantage of the API as they may be creating a conflict?

Splitsie I don't have any other mod that even requires the API mod. That's what puzzles me. But build vision works with out the API active. Go figure?
@totalal46016 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons I don't like the autobuild/grind mods where nanobots complete blocks for you is that with it, a ship like buttercup would never exist. No need to mount the big weilder, no need for engine nacelles, no need tp engineer a solution to a problem...

Am I the only one feel like the large thrusters are not symmetric? The one on the cockpit side is one more block away from the center than the other one. Not big problem, just in case you miss that. Although, someone mentioned about lifting up the large thrusters a little bit. And I too think that's a good idea, because you may cook the wreck in some case. If you happen to cook a critical block which breaks and let a large juicy part fall to the hand of gravity... it will be a little bit sad. I did that several times. And also, imaging that just happen above your base... Hope this help.
@璃月百姓6 жыл бұрын
Oh, you realized the cooking. Sorry, my bad. I should comment after I watched the whole episode. :P

@glenntanner36 жыл бұрын
Suggestion: scrap collector drones, 2-3 of them, RTH GPS. Control going out, is there a follow the leader so they can all go out then auto home ish, with manual collection. As for your turret mistake, might i recommend a re-enable timer. Turn them off starts a "turn on" timer, then if you forget... well hopefully not long without protection. Another scrap collector suggestion, based on the one you made: Hanging cockpit on a rotor so you can spin to see connecting to the scrap, additionally vector thrust to help with the lifting/speed needs.
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
The biggest downside to collector drones would be piloting them, trying to align the landing gear with cameras will be significantly more difficult, I'm also not sure if you'd run into the problem I had where the attached autopilot took over my ship even though it was through the landing gear :/ Vector thrust would certainly have advantages in terms of thruster count, but it's quite difficult to control finely which I'd need for the locking process which is why I avoided it, Whip141 has a script that uses thrusters on rotors that are locked in position which may work better but I've yet to try it out
@pietercrois91226 жыл бұрын
Hmm maybe thrusters inside the ship? Why no autolock?
@Splitsie6 жыл бұрын
I dislike autolock due to sometimes wanting to position the scrap carefully (something I probably should have done at the beginning to avoid BBQing it). You could certainly have autolock toggled on the hotbar as well since there are times where it's handy - like those times when you can barely get in contact with the piece you're picking up
