YOU are so good with that 7018 electrode! I have struggled with that 7018 for years -- so HARD TO USE. I'm scratching before restrike and doing all the right(?) things but, Man, just don't ever have any kind of success. I've tried both EPositive and ENeg, a range of amps, little welders, big welders, etc. Is there some art to it?

I usually keep a grinder nearby and just grind the glasslike slag off the tip of the electrode before restarting. It's fast and easy.

Thanks. You are correct for sure with the beaded-up flux on the rod, so I have always used a file by my side, BUT I discovered two more helpful things since posting... 1. In my case, I've discovered you REALLY have to remove the thin black mill scale on the parts. I was NOT doing that, and it has made all the difference in the World (Yep, 7018 fairly easy now!). 2. Again in my case, I have discovered that for some materials - cast iron to steel in particular (like reliably putting cast iron finials on steel pickets) - a rod called 312-16 is incredibly amazing and far better than 7018. It's meant for stainless steel AND dissimilar metals, and works awesomely well. I can't believe how well it works. Thanks again and have a great 2024. @@kundetjenesten

@@AerialLensVideo I must admit, I never really tried welding cast iron at all, I was mostly interested in seeing how it worked. I'd say around 70% of my welding is done with 6013 on carbon steel, 25% with flux core on thin stuff and the last 5% with 7018 on things I expect need to stand up to more abuse. My old man mosly did MIG (automotive work) but when he did stick weld he was a 7018 purist. When I started playing around with welding (I started with SMAW), he told me all I needed to use was 7018, if you couldn't weld it with that or MIG, then it wasn't worth welding. He scoffed at FCAW (which I get, it is messy, but worth not having to lease expensive gas tubes as a happy hobbyist) and he told me 6013 was something straight from hell. I showed him a weld I made but didn't tell him it was 6013 and he said it looked nice. 🤣 What I'm really looking for is something available here in Scandinavia that is similar to 6010: deep penetration and fast freeze, but it doesn't seem like anyone use it here... Anyways, I'm rambling away, just got off work and it is early saturday morning so I hope you'll have me excused to some extent. 😁 I hope you'll have a great year too mate!

Thank you! I must say, I would love to have a small inverter flux core MIG welder, especially for portability, but have no idea what is good quality at a budget price. I have a regular high-powered MIG , but forget about taking it offsite. Are you happy with your flux machine? I do know from research that the spatter adhesion (but still have the wild arc of course) can be avoided by using a non-spatter spray. 6013 is indeed really easy to use and nice and strong for most applications, and SO EASY to use. In the US, it was once called "the farmer's friend" because of its utility. Regarding 7018, your Pop was certainly right in terms of strength (great for safety-demanding tasks, like trailers), great fusion, and resistance to vibration, etc. I am so glad I finally learned that it simply demands clean joints ithout any scale or coatings. Thanks again, my friend. @@kundetjenesten

@@AerialLensVideo I am very happy with my little Spartus Easy MIG 125 (it isn't MIG, it's pure FCAW, but the product range is the same as the MIG ones that have gas option above 125). I havn't tried any other, so it could be that I just don't know any better, but once I dialed in the settings it has worked perfectly for my use, if anything is 2mm or thicker I always stick weld it so good penetration isn't a high FCAW priority for me. It is very restricted since it is only 0,8mm, only takes 1kg wire spools and has a 30% duty cycle. So the wire selection is a bit narrow and if you plan on any continuous fabrication it would probably disappoint, but since you have a proper machine for more demanding stuff I think you would perhaps like it for the portability and ease of use. And it is dirt cheap, I bought it for 2000 NOK (roughly 195-ish USD) a couple of years ago, and it hasn't failed me yet. PS: I believe they are made in Poland, which is a plus in my book since I'm not a big fan of Chinese stuff if it can be avoided.

Ready for some new content brother. What projects are you working on today? And truth on other sites is not as good as screw tube. I don't like social media. Not Goin to make another account, and more passwords. You know who call for an uprising is. That's how you reach people. Would like to talk truth with you. Screw tube is as far as I go. Possibly bit chut once in a great while. Or oddisee. But screw tube to reach the most people.
