Really impacted my parenting. Not diagnosed, treated until midlife. My stimulants have had a profound impact on being emotionally even keel.

"Tsunami (of anger) in that it overwhelms like a tidal wave and makes it so that you really can't think clearly anymore..feelings of anxiety..franticness and agitation and panic..leading to getting overwhelmed. The tendency is to ignore those early signs of feeling uncomfortably anxious, trying to get done what you need to get done, but then when it's almost too late you realize you're so overwhelmed that you can't think clearly." WOW. As a mom not diagnosed until middle age, it amazes me that I am just now getting to know myself. THANK YOU, Dr. Littman.

I came here thinking this was a talk about moms coping with their ADHD children. It is about moms who are struggling with their own ADHD. I long suspected I was struggling with ADHD. A lot of my behaviors make so much sense now after listening to this. I wish I had learned about this long ago.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🎙️ *Introduction to the challenges faced by ADHD moms* - Being a mom is challenging, especially for moms with ADHD. - Parenting advice often doesn't consider the unique challenges of ADHD moms. - The goal is to normalize the experiences of ADHD moms and offer strategies to cope. 03:04 🧠 *Cognitive Regulation Challenges* - ADHD moms face difficulties in cognitive regulation, including disorganization and unreliable memory. - Inconsistent stimulation and restlessness can make certain tasks challenging. - A binary worldview and struggles with decision-making can affect choices. 08:17 😓 *Emotional Regulation Challenges* - Emotional hyper reactivity is common in ADHD moms, leading to quick and intense emotional reactions. - Recognizing signs like irritability can help manage emotions effectively. - Understanding how estrogen levels influence ADHD symptoms and emotional regulation. 12:10 🩺 *Physiological Regulation and Sleep Deprivation* - ADHD moms often deal with hypersensitivities, affecting their physiological regulation. - Estrogen plays a crucial role in ADHD symptoms and regulation. - Sleep deprivation amplifies ADHD symptoms and impacts overall well-being. 15:55 🚧 *Behavioral Regulation Challenges* - Behavioral challenges include rigidity, perfectionism, and binary decision-making. - Societal expectations for women with ADHD can lead to self-doubt and comparison. - Coping with societal expectations and avoiding self-invalidation. 24:11 🤝 *Strategies for Survival* - Acknowledging one's own ADHD as a mother and its impact. - Recognizing "bad fits" in family dynamics due to different wiring. - Seeking treatment, therapy, and support to cope with ADHD challenges. 26:28 🕒 *Challenges of parenting with ADHD,* - Recognize that parenting with ADHD can be incredibly challenging and it's important not to downplay the difficulties you face. - Don't feel obligated to take on additional responsibilities or say yes to everything - it's okay to set boundaries. 27:08 🤝 *Building support networks,* - Understand that you don't have to go through the challenges of ADHD parenting alone; seek support from friends, family, or support groups. - Focus on your strengths and your child's strengths rather than fixating on weaknesses. - Encourage problem-solving together with your children to share the burden of finding solutions. 29:16 ⏰ *Importance of downtime and self-care,* - Prioritize downtime for both yourself and your children, even if it's just 10 minutes, to regroup and reduce stress. - Schedule downtime and make it a part of your routine, as waiting for the "right time" doesn't work with ADHD. - Dedicate quality time for enjoying each other's company without the pressure to achieve tasks. 30:53 🚶 *Embracing individuality and self-acceptance,* - Understand that it's okay not to conform to societal norms and expectations. - Don't judge yourself harshly based on others' standards; your unique path matters most. - Embrace effort and progress, even if it doesn't align with conventional measures of success. 36:37 👥 *Seeking support and sharing your ADHD journey,* - Communicating your ADHD diagnosis to friends, family, and colleagues can be challenging but important for understanding. - Share educational materials and resources to help others understand ADHD better. - Encourage open conversations and engagement from multiple sources to create a supportive network. 50:56 🕒 *Balancing the morning routine* - Balancing the morning routine for ADHD moms and their children. - Building in extra time for distractions and challenges. - Reframing priorities and focusing on a smoother, less stressful morning rather than rigid punctuality. 53:01 📝 *Coping with lists and constant rushing* - Managing lists and multiple tasks as an ADHD mom. - Feeling in a constant state of rushing and catching up. - Concerns about children growing up without a benchmark for a "normal" life. 54:11 🧺 *Involving family and organizing together* - Getting spouses and family members involved in organizing and time management. - Exploring creative solutions, like individual baskets for children. - Acknowledging that organizing the family's world is a shared challenge. 56:03 📜 *Unique morning routines and accommodations* - Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for morning routines. - Mention of IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) and 504 plans as potential accommodations for school tardiness. - Emphasizing that morning routines should be family-specific and tailored to individual needs.
