My first folding saw was a Laplander and it works great. BUT, when I began using a Silky Gomboy, I gave my Laplander to one of my scouts. I have 2 Gomboy saws, with the 2nd one being their Outback edition. Liking their Outback editions so much, I bought one of their Pocketboy saws. Silky is my all time favorite folding saw companies! Just remember that they cut on the pull stroke, don't force the blade when pushing as it will break!!

Silkys are great, haven't found anything that compares and not inclined to look further either. My pocketboy 170 broke twice, but that was purely user error. There is a learning curve if you are not used to pullsaws. Bigboy 360 is a perfect companion to Skrama being roughly of same size and weight. I thought my 650 was a beast, but that 1000 is a monster! The 500 is perfect for framing, makes short work of rafters and has a longer reach than any powertool

Both are excellent. My small folding saw preference is Bacho Laplander. The Bacho isn't as aggressive cutting and its smaller teeth pattern cut on push/pull. The tough little Bacho actually works alright for use on breaking apart larger game meat and bone and it's far more economical. I suspect it's all about priorities and what tasks your going about and to a great degree your budget. For me I use Bacho Laplander folder and Silky fixed blade for their applications. Bacho isn't near the woods saw but in some ways it's more useful to me and at end of the day both will cut wood.

Invest into another Silky blade with more tooth count if you think the large tooth is more aggressive. Push/Pull = waste more energy for less result.

That intro had me laughing! Great job with the video. It was informative and a bit of humor throughout.

Thumbs up just for the beginning! That said, a Laplander is about $50 CAD plus shipping. A Silky 240 length is only about $10 more and last year I bought a Silky Outback Bigboy for $90 from a store I was driving past anyway. Cost to value the Bahco always looses. Also, Survival Russia doesn't know the difference between stainless and carbon steels so his opinion on anything should be subject.

I briefly studied ancient Japanese joinery when I was Young. The Japanese invented shark tooth pull saws to make the intricate joinery used in Japanese building construction in the old days. Contrary to Western joinery their joints are made to move and slip and not break at the joints because of the constant earthquakes in their country. Contrary to Western saws they are meant to be pulled to do the cutting and not pushed. That is why most people break this saw. They use Western saws and then they try to use the same cutting technique for Japanese saws. When cutting through a piece of wood you can score across the top of the wood first and then pull the saw through the wood and that way you never make a tear out on any edge of your cut. Both of these saws are excellent and each has its purpose. For me the silky selection of saws is good for base camp work. If you're making a shelter or just lots of firewood Etc. But if I were going out hiking through the bush with the possibility there could be a disaster situation I would prefer to have the Bacho. It cuts slower but there is less chance of breaking. Did you know that the blade is tapered from the tooth Edge to the back Edge that is why the teeth do not need to be set from one side to the other. If you want something different you can buy a handle that uses reciprocating saw blades. That is what I carry in my Carpenters tool kit for many years and that way you can have a whole bunch of different types of blades for your saw and they are disposable and cheap.

The Laplander was made by Sandvik, Bahco bought it and makes it all over. I have an original Sandvik model, never seen the Bahco so I can’t compare. Silky saws break through user-error, it’s why many prefer the Bahco because it is EXTREMELY forgiving. But performance-wise, there is no comparison. At all. Not even a contest. Those Katanaboy saws….jeez!!!

I have two silky saws. One I used a lot out in the woods keeping a fire going while drinking with my buddies. Needless to say I abused that saw, and I haven't snapped it. What ended up happening was that I bent the blade here and there from misuse. A lot of the videos I've seen of people breaking or bending them is when they try to use it as a push or bi-directional saw and going as fast as they can. While it's fair to say that they need more care when handling, and proper technique, and may be more fragile than other saws, they cut really well and I've been happy with mine. Even the saw blade I bent still cuts fine and I now use it for yard work and cutting things I know I shouldn't with a saw.
@Survivaland Жыл бұрын
That is what I said. This old version snapped, and grains in steel shows bad tempering. Latest saws will bend, which is a good thing.

What do you think about Gerber Freescape camp saw? I think it could be more usable if you camp for a bit longer period in the same place.

Lol, man that katana boy is a damn beast of a saw! U could cut a whole forest down and not even get tired! A good tip, when u comparing things, you might want to show clips of u using both items. Like if it’s supposed to be water proof get in the rain, if it’s supposed to be warm then get out in the cold and see which is better! Or which one you would recommend. Can’t wait to see more! I definitely need a smiley face patch, to bad the shipping is crap! Keep Up the great work my friend!

I own nine different silky products (including two choppers) and it's safe to say I'm a little obsessed. they're extremely useful in my profession (arborist) and ever since I bought my first I've wanted more. I'd say their best product overall has to be the tsurugi, it's got so many amazing features and innovations, but really they're all great tools. glad to see them getting some love, I'm definitely jealous of that katanaboy 😂

Love the comparison. And your humor! As for the saws, I'm looking for something very easy to us, lightweight and cuts like pee through snow... I decided on the silky saw. But I'm also going to look for a smaller saw I can have on my body. Thank you! It helped me to make up my mind.

I KNOW that Silky makes amazing saws; I have absolutely no doubt. Their reputation, with the guys who use them, is indisputable. Despite that, my Laplanders have served me SO WELL throughout the years that I just can't write them off. To be honest, I don't think that you could go wrong with EITHER.

I wanna see how the dugout is going! I like comparison videos while shopping, but once I settle, it’s over and I stick with my choice. I’d rather see them used to make stuff… knives, saws and stoves… with water filters once in a while… survive, build, thrive. I’d love to see the progression to trapping or hunting… I’m too old to hike so I got a Toyota to get me out in the bush.

Steels and the chemistry in them change. Heat treats vary and so do the way people use them. I could buy 30 of them and every single one is going to be slightly different. Things break and shit happens.

Why do all podcasters compare the laplander hard tooth saw pattern with silky pruning saw blades why don't you compare bacho jt 396 pruning saw blades with silky pruning saw blades then that we would be a real apples with apples comparison instead of an apple with lemons comparison😮
