Being a carpenter for 25 years... some of that sawing footage made me cringe... a whole lot of binding going on. You always want your cut wood to fall open... not pinch in on the cut.

Pine is not a hardwood no matter how dry it is.Oak,maple ,hickory and walnut are hardwoods.The smaller teeth are designed to help channel fine saw dust out of the cut.Soft woods like pine produce coarser dust when cut, hence the larger teeth.

Northern pines yes - Southern yellow pine is a completely different story. I've worked in houses in Fla. constructed around the turn of the century (1900) made with yellow pine so hard that driving a nail is nearly impossible without a pilot hole. You do need a fine toothed saw ( near metal cutting size) to cut that type of pine.

Totally agree with all the points you make. I use folding saws daily at work so I'm familar with what works best. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the Laplander, I don't like the smooth plastic or the way the handle and blade are in a straight line. Love the more angled handle of the F180 and it cuts twice as fast as the Laplander. Worth every penny!

Nice review- thx. Question for you - does that 180 have a metal locking pin like the Gomboy or is it plastic? Also to note - one of the reasons Silky Saws perform so well is that they essentially do a reverse hollow grind on the blades, where the spine is thinner than the edge, allowing the teeth to be oriented straight up and down. Most saws solve the problem by pushing out alternating teeth to create the kerf - which creates more drag than with a Silky. 🤘

I've been sawing all kinds of wood for over 50 years. A basic rule of thumb for rough cutting any wood. Use the saw with the biggest teeth possible to make the cut as fast as possible. On really hard wood you may have to go with a smaller toothed saw because the big teeth just can't bit in. I own both saws you reviewed and totally agree with your insights. Great job!

You failed to comment on a HUGE difference between the 2 saws. The 210 has metal contact points where the blade pivots, which would be a likely a high stress point/failure point. The 180 has a plastic contact point with where the blade is held and pivots. Any comments?

Im an avid user of Silky and a quick rundown - XL Teeth - Its really for the Big Boy and up and better for larger logs, if you use XL teeth on smaller handles you will have a hard time catching on smaller limbs. You get wider cuts and less precision Large Teeth- A decent all around option for the medium and large size saws (Gomboy to Katana). Again if you use them to cut smaller limbs you are going to get hung up more on the cuts and have less control Medium- An option for the Gomboy to the Pocket Silky medium to small range- I think this is a all around utility size for the Gomboy and the Pocketboy. You get better contact on smaller work. Fine - I have one and I never use it, I think its main use would be for wood working and carving projects where you are doing ultra precise and clean cuts. My take - if you had to pick one it would be the Gomboy with Large or Medium teeth. If you had to pick 2 I would go with the Gomboy and the Big Boy. For me - The Big Boy is a project saw for around my heavily wooded property, trail work saw and in the car saw that replaced my electric chainsaw the day I got it. The Gomboy is the best pack saw/camping/hiking/hunting small project saw. Ive used the Big Boy to clear roads after winter storms and summer wind storms here locally.

The Silky does sell a large tooth blade for the Gomboy, 6 teeth per inch (7 teeth per 30 mm). For an actual saw comparison you should have used that blade in your Gomboy and not just what you had lying around. As I just purchased a Gomboy I was looking forward to watching this review but was very disappointed with your methodology.

You can find any size Silky saw blade for any of the Silky saws i.e., you can get large teeth on that Gomboy. Generally speaking, the large teeth will outperform medium teeth in a camping scenario. Medium teeth are better for tree pruning when you want to inflict the least amount of damage (cleaner cuts) to the living tree. Large teeth are almost always going to give you faster/more efficient cutting for shelter construction and firewood prep.

i agree that whichever one you choose, these are great saws. I have two PocketBoy 170s and a BigBoy red-handle - large teeth. I have also had a tip breakage with the PocketBoy due to a last minute tree limb shift that pinched the blade as I was returning to the start of the cut position. But it has lasted 3 yrs and seen a lot of action in hurriedly clearing routes and also being possibly mis-used in order to clear paths briars / brambles etc. Excellent cutters and far more stealthy than using an axe...

If you like the silky, but want a little less expensive saw, try the corona 10 inch folding saw. 20 bucks, and it works great. Not saying it's better than silky, but in my opinion, it is as good, and less money. I was watching you saw in your video. Maybe you broke the tip because you are sawing on the inside of your prop log, instead of the outside? Doing this causes your blade to bind as your cut deepens due to the pressure and weight of the whole length of the log, instead of putting it on the outside edge of your prop log, where it will NOT bind. Just saying, if you use your tool the right way, it is less likely to become a broken tool. Love your videos, keep up the great job. It helps us to make more informed purchases!

Large teeth will always cut faster it doesn't matter if the wood is green or dry. If you look at the vintage cross cut saws they only have about 4 teeth per inch and they are meant to cut dry and green wood. Also pine is a soft wood unless you're sawing though fatwood. One more thing it's a Gomboy not a Gumboy.

the gomboy is easily my favourite, I used mine more than anything. but I lost/misplaced/stolen mine years ago now. I recently picked up three cheapo ones from Walmart I think it was. they were in the gardening section, and on clearance last, last fall for $6 each. and that was 1/2 price tops, so they were still cheap no matter what. I have to say, they get the job done. I gave one to my hunting buddy and keep the extra for a spare in the truck. I used mine for everything this past year and they have easily done all that's been asked of them. i'll never pay that higher price for one again.

Mike: you're right, of course, but it's a real easy mistake to make, especially when the log is cut almost all the way thru... The log gets more grabby at the beginning and end of the cutting process. For someone accustomed to using push strokes with saws, a relatively delicate pull blade is kinda easy to accidently bend.

I believe that the hinge area on the F180 where the handle connects to the blade is less sturdy, so the Gomboy is probably a better option if you want reliability. The plastic/fiberglass of the F180 will fail before the metal components in the Gomboy. Still, the F180 is by far a better choice over the popular Bahco Laplander.

If you are simply trying to process a lot of logs for a fire that you do not need to split a saw is much better. If you had two, twenty-foot trees you wanted to process into 1-foot logs for a fire you would be much less tired using a saw to do that as opposed to a hatchet. As mentioned you can't split wood with a saw or say anything with a diameter bigger than the saw. So to answer your question, a saw is not really a one tool option. If you are looking for a one tool option between a hatchet and a saw go with the hatchet. I use my saw in a system, a hand saw, a larger knife like maybe an ESEE Junglas 2 for splitting and chopping, and then a pocket knife like the ColdSteel Finnwolf for detailed tasks. All three of those tools together weight in about the same as a hatchet. So I have a lot more capabilities for the same weight then I would with just a hatchet. It all comes down to the system and what you are trying to do. Don't get me wrong I love hatchets, saws, fixed blades and folders. They all have there pros and cons.
@zzz7zzz9
@zzz7zzz9 6 жыл бұрын
you can't use your hatchet to split wood until it's sawn into smaller lengths. and a saw is a lot better for cutting lengths than chopping them shorter with a hatchet. one can collect varying sizes/thicknesses of logs branches, etc and omit the need of splitting. but, one could also eliminate the need for sawing shorter lengths by simply laying the end of the whole length of log on the fire and sliding it into the fire as it burns. one could make do with either or neither.

My first Silky Saw was the F-180, then I became interested in their Outback Saws and eventually got a Silky Fox Bigboy Outback Saw. Pretty soon afterwards I got the Silky Gomboy Outback Saw, and I'm very happy with each of them. The F-180 is my ultralight choice that accompanies my Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet, Mora Companion Heavy Duty knife and Cold Steel SF Shovel. The Gomboy teams up with my GB Wildlife Hatchet in a medium kit and the Bigboy joins my GB Small Forest Axe in my larger kit, whichever kit is taken, the Mora knife and CS SF Shovel become part of it. Each is carried on a small folding bicycle and Alpacka Packraft, and the CS SF Shovel actually works as a paddle!

All blades for all the models are replaceable and you can buy fine, medium or large toothed

I agree with you that the Silky Saws are great, and that the F-180 will perform better than the Silky Gomboy. The F-180 with large teeth is a good alternative, albeit more expensive to the Corona 10" folding saw, and the Bahco Laplander. However, with all that being said, and for the type of sawing tasks that you appear to be performing, I believe that you would have better results when using a "curved" blade folding saw from Silky, rather than the two "straight" blade saws that you showcased. In addition to a curved saw blade, I would instead recommend a saw that has extra large teeth, rather than just large, medium, or fine teeth. So I would make two changes...curved blade, and extra large teeth. Based upon those recommendations I would choose the Silky BIGBOY 2000, with 360mm ( XL Teeth ) and a 14.2-in blade, or 30.11-in overall length, 5.5 teeth per inch, with a weight of 1 lb. Second, I would choose the Silky Ultra Accel with 240-mm curved blade, with Large teeth, and a 9.5-in. blade, or 19.88-in. overall length, with a weight of 10.4 oz. The Ultra Accel does not have the XL teeth, but it does have the curved blade geometry, which when combined with the curved blade will cut better than the F-180 straight blade with large teeth. One additional benefit form using these two saws...since they have longer blades, each stroke will remove more material than that of a shorter blade. So unless you just can't use a longer blade I would definitely go with the Silky BIGBOY, or the Silky Ultra Accel instead. The improved sawing efficiency comes with a higher price tag then the F-180 however, so that must be factored into the equation. However, when your Silky Big Boy makes quick work of any sawing tasks that you are faced with, you will quickly forget about a few extra dollars that you spent wisely.

I have both the Big boy 2000xl and the red F180. Both are great saws. I always have the F180 in my backpack since it's the lightest of the silky folding saws. Still pretty much just as sharp as the day I bought it, and I've cut through some really dense wood. We have quite a bit of black locust wood on our property that I've used for making tool handles and Ive used the F180 nearly every time to cut it just because it goes in my back pocket so easily. If you see one go on sale definitely buy it. It pairs well with the BigBoy. At camp I use the BigBoy paired with a Silky Nata for processing wood. And when I'm backpacking I pair the F180 with my Mora HD Companion.

I've said before I really enjoy your channel. Your production value keeps getting better and better! I know you're a busy guy with your channel, real job and family, but try to watch a few other videos on the products you review so you can get the names right. In a previous video you pronounced SERE as siri, when it should be seer. I think I heard you say Bahco as bahko in this video which is correct I think you used to say baho. Of course gomboy is gAHmboy not gumboy. And it's not in this video, but you need to know that junglas is hoonglas not hungalas. Sorry to nitpick, but if this is a calling for you I want to see you do it right. Keep up the good work I'm always looking forward to your next review. One last thing when I'm sawing I let the chunk of wood hang off the log it's propped on so as I cut gravity pulls it down and opens up the channel that I'm sawing into. If the wood is propped on a log and you cut between the log and ground then as you cut gravity creates a very shallow V on your wood and binds your saw blade.
