very nice trap Lilly. really nice. I am a fan and watch many vid of yours and many of them make sense and i've learn a lot from you. However, we locals don't need to waste all the effort to catch crab, lol. My humble suggestion, pls go see how the locals catch food. Simplified. the formula is always exert the least among of energy to accumulate the highest amount of food resources.

To much energy used to make this trap in a survival situation, easier to dig a hole and cover most of it exept the holes you want the animals/crabs/snakes to use to get down into the trap. Because either you need a very big diameter of the bamboo or you might need 100 of these to get all the crabs you need since not all will catch anything.

Kinda reminds me of a figure 4 deadfall trap. Seems quite similar in concept, but instead of using gravity, you use tension by rubber strand. Not sure how useful this would be for survival since it can only catch really small crabs (though I suppose even small crabs would be better than nothing). You might need to use bigger bamboo to catch substantial meat, but I'm not sure how much thicker bamboo grows. So perhaps a different plant.

@samstewart4444

The blue elastic band could have been replaced by a flexible piece of wood. This trap design has been used in rural parts of West Virginia for catching rabbits, possums, skunks, etc. for at least 60 years. The tube was replaced by a wooden box, and the door closed by gravity, but the trigger mechanism was the same. I used to find traps like this (50 years ago) on deserted farms that were very old. One advantage of this type of trap is that if you catch a family pet by mistake you could let them go unharmed. Another important advantage (in a survival situation) is that you could catch rabbits alive, put them in a cage and feed them weeds that were inedible to people. The rabbit was in effect, converting something useless (the weeds) to something good to eat (rabbit meat.) I know this technology works because I once made a trap like this to catch whatever was killing chickens on a farm in Colorado. It turned out the predator was a skunk.

Whereas the trap works, it is overly complicated, and requires some sort of torsion material to work. And, to be fair, it wouldn't be easy to just find rubber sheet on an island. Even if you did, rubber breaks down in sunlight quickly, so it would most likely be useless.

Cool idea, but this seems like an overly elaborate trap to catch crab. Here on the Pacific coast I've seen people catch 6" Dungeness crab with nothing more than a dish drying rack. The problem with this trap is that it is an active trap. That means once any animal has tripped the trap, that is all you get. One crab does not a meal make. I would have used the bamboo to create a simple trap that will allow the crab in, but not back out. That way multiple crab can be caught.

Lilly you don't need all that to catch crabs. Also that trap won't let in a large crab, the kind good for eating. Just take a line and a sinker, tie some chicken necks from a grocery store to it and drop it where crabs are located. You'll need a net, though you can also get a crab trap in the form of a net and an iron circle, then if you have that, just tie the bait to the bottom of the net. When you feel a tugging, pull the line easily up (if all you have is the bait tied to it) or harder but not too hard if you have a crab net. Dump the crabs into a tall fruit basket and go back for more. If you are in a survival situation, some fish parts or bits of game you have hunted will work in place of the necks.
