Hey again Bryan, I just had to go buy this knife more for curiosity than anything else, 2 things I really like about it so far, 1. it's very light weight in comparison to my other 7-8 inch blades and I think this would be a good knife for a hiker/camper who wants a bigger blade. 2. I like the molded sheath, it seems to be far more sturdy than Schrade's nylon sheaths and I really like the positive retention. I have not really beaten up this one yet but the knife came razor sharp and cuts through small vegetation very well.

I'm nearly 40 and am a big blade guy so I guess I'm still a kid too. I carry a 10" blade and never had any problems doing "knife stuff" and I live in the middle of tens of thousands of acres forest and marshland. Big blades rock! Plus, in my opinion, it's better to have more and need less than to need more and have less and that goes for knives too. So you go ahead and carry as big a knives as you want and enjoy 'em!

Say Heah, long story short. We once were caught in a storm that hit us quick. We split up and a buddy of mine started batoning. I held he batoned. My O. K. C. Ranger RD-9 really started to curve that made me think it was ruined, I told him to continue, Once we got through, It straightened out true. Surprised the both of us. I was using my Ranger Afghan in the 1/4" 5160 with orange G-10 handle's that matched my Ranger RD-9 as my combo. I still use this combo and it's still going strong. I ordered smore 5160 knives, and one of my current and Fav. combo's is my Gen2 SP-53 with my Ranger T. F. I.. For the $$$ my "Sharp Hammer" is one of my Fav's. ,, .

+Frank Williams The Thrunite links are because I agreed to include them for every video I posted in January in return for them sponsoring my SHOT Show triip. The Amazon link is a generic link because at the time the only link for this knife was from a 3rd party seller and sounded a little sketchy. You can click the link and search the Amazon site for whatever you want and it will support the channel. I appreciate the support.

I like the looks of the knife, but I wonder if the longer blade will make it more likely to be used for tasks that will expose the lack of a full tang. Let's remember the LMF was designed to be used for cutting through straps and electrical wires...hence the separation between the blade and pommel to avoid electric conduction. But when you lengthen the knife and start chopping and batoning, one wonders how this design will hold up.

Nice knife, I'm curious to know if it's a full tang, rat tail tang, or a hollow tang to account for the overmolded glass filled nylon grip. Not a great sparker for fire starting, probably because of the coating on the blade. Impressive as a alternative to a Gerber LMF or BMF. a Kabar or a Randall.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose Yeah, I did some more research, and you're right. It's 3/4 Tang - Canadian Cutting Edge disassembled his and revealed the tang. It's interesting that Schrade put in a separate piece for the pommel/glass breaker. I've never heard of that before. Can only get the serrated model now. Can't believe Schrade/Taylor Brands discontinued this knife.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 5 жыл бұрын
That is because this was a pretty close copy of the Gerber LMF. This is from Gerber's website " There is complete separation between the tang and butt cap, so the knife absorbs the shocks from hammering and prevents the shocks of electricity."

@MrAndrewmcgibbon
@MrAndrewmcgibbon 9 жыл бұрын
+Ariel Luna $60 is waaaaaay to much for 420j2. there are similar sized knives by Mtech and Elk Ridge that are 1/2 that price made of much better steel. The Sheath is pretty good. But you can get a bunch of different Ontario Spec Plus knives of similar size made of 1095 steel. for the same price or less.
@Airik1111bibles
@Airik1111bibles 9 жыл бұрын
+Ariel Luna Watch the Fire & Steel channel of the Schf 40 its definitely good heat treated steel and it held up in the freezing temperatures. This obsession with steel IMHO is getting to be a bit over exaggerated in so many ways cause I heard so much people crapping on Gerber over the LMF2 having 420 steel like it was an aluminum butter knife and worthy of the kitchen drawer. I see tons of comments about how horrible 420J2 steel is like everyone is a professional black Smith;) Gerber gets hammered over their 420 yet the LMF2 and their Strongarm have some of the best abuse vids on KZbin. Buck is a tried and true brand and their major sellers use the same Japanese 420J2. 65$ for that knife seems like a great price and the 5 inch schf40 is 59$ and after watching Fire and Steel beat the living crap out of theirs I would have no problem spending 59$ on that knife.
@chindas12
@chindas12 9 жыл бұрын
I maintain my opinion. And also Buck uses 420HC not 420J2.

you don't "Let" patents expire. Patents are only granted for a specific period of time. they are not renewable. seldom are patents issued for more than 15 years. a perfect example is the patents associated colt 1911. When John browning left colt and began design of the High Power, he had to create a virtually new design because he couldn't use the patents colt held on his own design. By 1935 when the high power went into production all of the colt patents had expired.

@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 жыл бұрын
It is surprisingly not uncomfortable. And I think they cost them so they don't rust on the container ships crossing the Pacific. Stainless will rust, just not as readily.
@MrAndrewmcgibbon
@MrAndrewmcgibbon 9 жыл бұрын
typically stainless blades are powder coated because its a cheap one step finish that looks cool. From a manufacturing perspective it eliminates finishing the blades after heat treat and grinding. the powder coat cost pennies cleaning off the heat discoloration and removing grinding marks is labor intensive and more costly. If you remember in the 90s every manufacturer was offering bead blasted blades. CRKTs entire catalog was bead blasted for a while there. it was for the same reason. The bead blasting removes heat treat discoloration and camouflages the scratches from the grinding process much the way that popcorn texture on drywall ceilings hides the drywall but joint seams. If you sand through the bead blast finish to polish those blades you expose the grinding scratches.

Blade length is good, handle looks good but for some reason I'm not digging this one. Maybe cuz it does kinda look like something Gerber would make. Great review though.

Formidable knife!... a pity that no matter how much I watched the 10-minute video twice, I could never know how thick the blade was. I hope they reveal it in another video. Cheers !

+sojourn I wouldn't go that far, but they re definitely easier to use in MOST emergency situations. Which is why I always have one in my pocket. (Actually, I have a Clipper right now)

Brian you said this knife is made from j2 steel but it is now listed as sk5 steel, did schrade change the steel ? Other reviewers said the same as you but I see it listed as sk5 on the seller sites and schrades own website. Sk5 steel puts this knife in a whole other league and I would seriously consider breaking my budget to buy it. Maybe you could use your vast schrade connections (joking) to find out the truth.
@SurvivalOnPurpose

I guess they changed it. I'll try to ask them at SHOT

Thank you so much. Sk5 steel, for me, how I use knives, my ability to sharpen them etc., is my favorite knife steel.
