I'm Glad you didn't balance test this knife.....split that handle would be a shame. What surprised me was during your video I checked the price. The Sheath and blade I found was just under 150. A scandi grind, razor sharp 90° spine, good steel, a nice working knife for my hand....and that sheath is really nice. I spent $110 for my Mora SS and this knife is much much higher quality. I SEE A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR ME.....THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO !!!!

I bought the Becker 2 weeks ago, and I love it. I also bought the 4” Kephart style knife from OKC (Old Hickory), and I like it almost as much as the Becker. If you have 30 bucks to spend and want a Kephart-inspired knife, get the OKC knife and consider building a better sheath for it. 😉

Hey, I own the Old Hickory Fish and Game 4". It is a great knife. FWIW - It fits perfect in the Good Quality Esee PR4 leather sheath (NO BS). Esee site / store / shop / sheaths / leather / scroll / PR4 (left or right handed) / $25 / ~$6.95 (shipping) to me. Your mileage may vary? I'm looking at it right now. Using a scandi grind to slice and eat an apple sucks. (Or, other food prep)

I live a few miles from A.G. RUSSELS shop. I've seen the kabar version and hate almost everything about it after being able to handle it in person. My Condor Kephart is many times more useful, and cheaper, and more true to the idea of the knife. Beckers original he owns did not inspire kabars near enough from my own research I've done on the knife. I am planning on next buying the PKS Kephart XL as it I think follows Horace's knife much more authentically. Thank you for another great video Brian!

A bit late to comment on this video but I believe the best kephart style knife out there is the LT wright genesis in 3v. I’ve also ‘had’ the bark river kephart in 3v, keyword HAD the bark river kephart! I find it much too thin for its size. Both companies knives do seem to be prone to rolling and chipping out of the box until hand sharpened. OKC also has the bushcraft field in 5160 which is a kephart style knife as well but it’s handle is quite different than the others.

Hello Brian, Thanks for another informative review. I have the ESEE PR4 and love it. I've been reading Kephart's book, Camping and Woodcraft, and found it interesting that the sheath knife he illustrates in it is more of a harpoon style blade. Also he illustrates a "Taxidermist's Knife" which is more of a small drop point profile. I know that he also wrote for Forest and Stream magazine and possibly his views on the perfect sheath knife evolved over time. In any case your reviews on these blades are fun and enjoyable.

I have the BK 62, mostly for its historical importance to Horace Kephart but it is a nice knife. Although Kephart’s knife was the four inch version and I keep hoping Ka-Bar will introduce a four inch companion Kephart to the BK 62. I like the Esee PK 4 because of its four inch blade and yes, the sharpened spine. But I’ve read so many conflicting opinions on the scales. Lots of people say that they’re uncomfortable. Going on your review, I might just pull the trigger on the PK 4 and find out for myself. The Pathfinder looks wonderful but my interest is in the shorter four inch blade.

OK...IMHO, that Pathfinder knife is a winner. In my mind, this is what a 'bushcraft' knife should be. In the knife world, little things seem to mean a lot. I thought of you on a camping trip last weekend...I found TWO twenty-foot fatwood tree cores on West Point Lake in GA, That's right...40 feet of pure, plastic-looking fatwood. I wanted to bathe in the stuff. It smelled wonderful; I had a hard time leaving it behind, but I 'waypointed' it on my GPS...I'll be back! I "loves me some fatwood" too! :)

This Pathfinder looks like a beautiful knife. A Kephart? Scandi grind? Esee PR4, OKC SK- 4 or 5, Buck 104 in D2 or 3V all balance tested, with Micarta scales and 90 degree spines. Regular folks @$22 a pop can buy 5 Old Hickory 5" knives with a sheath for the price of 1 BK-62 or any of these other knives. For ~$10 you can put the Hickory in a better Ka-Bar 5" leather sheath black or brown. (ebay) It rides lower on the belt.

Old Hickory 5.5" Hunting Knife fits the Ka-Bar short leather sheath?
@MutsPub
@MutsPub 3 жыл бұрын
@@monkeylovemagic3339 Yes. Both Brown and Black. It fits perfectly. The 5" Ka-Bar sheath will hold - OKC SK-5, cold Steel Peacemaker 2, OKC Bushcraft Field, Becker Bk-16 / 17, Mark 1, OKC 499, and more. The Ka-Bar Leather sheath for 7" knives will hold the Old Hickory 7" butcher knife as well. The problem is the wood handles are "straight" and will slip upward in the snap retention strap. Re-rout that strap to make it tighter. It is riveted in. You need to rotate that strap anyway so that the open "flap" is facing to the rear so that you don't open the strap while walking through brush. Just push both of the ends back through, rotate the strap 180 degrees on the rivet, then feed back through. This is where you can make the strap tighter. Don't feed 1 or both back through. Just snap them around the knife handle however tight you want it.. Easily done hard to describe. (Try describing to someone how to tie a shoelace.) Or, add tape to handle to create a small "bump" so it can't slide up. Cloth athletic tape, Hockey tape, electrical tape, etc. Note: If snap strap is to tight. Pull. twist, turn the strap to stretch it out a bit. Wrap knife handle at the spot where the strap goes with 4 wraps of masking tape. Force the snap to close. Then, wrap around the strap and sheath so that is will take the proper shape. Leave it that way for 2-3 days. When you take all the tape off the strap will have stretched out and now work perfectly. Oil the sheath - done. These sheathes will last decades if oiled.

“Not design as a survival knife” it has a scandi blade, it can strike a fire starter, shave wood, its at a good size, and you just showed what you can do with the knife in a survival situation if all of those criteria’s don’t make it a survival/bushcraft then what does? Of course a survival knife doesn’t have to be a scandi grind, a survival knife is what you bring with you or have on you when you are in a survival situation but i think you contradicted yourself in the video. I think overall you showed the potential of what the knife can do, great video.

I hear you. What I meant was that most knives intentionally designed as “survival” knives are usually “one tool options” which are heavier and thicker so they can do a little chopping. Obviously, any hood knife can be considered a survival knife if that is what you have.

The K-Bar seems to be much more labor intensive. The tang is tapered and the blade. The full grind on the blade is also more labor intensive. The scandy grind is good enough. The blade on the Pathfinder is full width all the way to just before the tip. This is more in keeping with manufacturing of a utility knife from early forges and I believe more in keeping with a early american style knife. I like the path finder blade better.

That is INCORRECT - see The Elven Archer, Dutch Bushcraft Knives, Survival On Purpose, & others on KZbin. Carbon steel rusts! For those of us who live & operate in humid/marine environment, carbon steel will NOT do. Same applies to Tool Steel. There are relatively good & not too expensive stainless steels that are much better. See Cedric & Ada Gears on KZbin for an excellent list of Stainless Steel comparison for knives.

Hey John. So I checked on Patreon and you are still showing up as a supporter. I sent you a test message through the Patreon system to the email listed there. I searched my email service for that email or even for your name and it did not find it. Maybe you hit the unsubscribe link by mistake? Or maybe there was a glitch in the system. I did miss one week's newsletter (I think it was on Easter) but I have sent a newsletter every week other than that. IF you didn't find them in your SPAM folder maybe see if you can subscribe again at SurvivalOnPurpose.com/Subscribe. If it lets you then that means you have been unsubscribed for some reason. It is an automated service I have used for years to manage email lists so I have no idea what may have happened.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose Got the email and also resubscribed. It let me go through the process, but as yet I haven't gotten the activation email. I was warned that it may take 12 hours. Looks like I may have unsubscribed somehow.
