In northern Canada, as a kid in the 1960's, we ate snow normally. It was free water everywhere. I eat snow in the bush, because its clean, usually (not the yellow stuff). As for the tipi, it was a Plains Indians shelter, with poles and bison hides. But now, it has been adapted by the eastern Natives too, who use polytarps (not clear ones, but the blue, or green coloured tarps) for the tipi cover. It covers the entire pole structure, no big open door like yours. They also add a half-wall inside, which acts as a cold sink insulator. The top is open to allow smoke to escape, since a small fire, or a small wood stove, heats the tipi. They really are super stable, and easy to build and use. Take care, Lars.

Good to see you Lars... hoping all is well in your camp. One thing I would add is often times having or storing a water bottle upside down... this way, lid/cap less likely to freeze shut as well as ice formation would likely hard freeze at container bottom vs. ice sealing off top.

You could also turn your water bottle upside-down, since ice trend to form on the top, being less dense than the liquid. So even if the top half freezes solid, then when you turn the cap up, the water is on top and accessible.

Another good thing to remember is that if the water is too warm, it will melt the snow and reduce the depth of insulation. Also, water is weird and will lose heat energy faster if hot (ice crystals when thrown :) ) so I found that letting the water cool a bit first, while insulated (wrapped up in your clothing which keeps you nice and toasty, or in your sleeping bag, to cool a bit (while still taking advantage of the heat), before burying in the snow. If the snow is likely to still melt, make the layer thicker then, if it does melt, when/if it refreezes, it will still have enough to stay insulated.

I’d advise (first making sure the cap is secure, then) turning the bottle upside down. That way, if it starts to freeze, you can still drink it. Since it will be the bottom of the bottle that freezes, and not the neck/spout.
