Hello Everyone! There is some debate about how we tied up to our mooring ball in this video and we wanted to clear up the questions. Here’s the video link at the moment we start tying up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnO6lYJ9i6t1mZo WE DID IT WRONG! We attached to our crossbeam which is not meant for taking heavy loads (i.e. heavy winds/weather). We should have attached to our bridal (which is a pain the butt to attach to a mooring on our boat…aka, we were being lazy). We underestimated Mother Nature. We based our preparations too strongly on the weather predictions. We did not follow that age old adage: _Prepare for the Worst and Hope for the Best!_ We expected 30 knots or so of wind and a small tropical storm. The system sat on top of Vava’u for nearly 2 days while it built and formed into a category one cyclone (named ZAZU). Fortunately, we learned this lesson without any consequence. When the winds started building to 40-knots we knew we were under-secured to our mooring. We did man the helm and continuously checked our holding. Once Tropical Cyclone ZAZU passed, in preparation for tropical cyclone YASA (a category 4 cyclone), we beefed up our holding to the mooring. Which we showed on our Instagram stories (@the_wynns) under the cyclone highlights. Here’s what we did to beef up our holding in preparation for the big cyclone: *Main Lines*: 2 Lines run to the anchor bridal ring. 2 slacked lines run to the outside forward cleats with chafe guard. *1st Backup*: Large Anchor line tied to mooring chain (3 links below the shackle) attached at anchor bridal ring. *2nd Backup*: Slacked lines to the crossbeam We suggest if you’re prepping for a cyclone you should discuss techniques with your boat manufacturer and talk to the local boaters as they may have insight that’s worth consideration.

Before the year wraps what needs to be said is how much good you two accomplished along the way, saving one stray kitty and then untold numbers of rescue animals, steering a sailor to life-saving medicine, bringing clean water to a village. The list goes on. In the midst of your own desperate circumstance, you acted out of care and compassion for others, and changed lives. You are experiencing the world, but you are also making it a better place than you found it. As the Aussies say, Good on ya, mates!

Thanks for the video. Hi Jason, you mentioned that wires should not be under tension and you're right. So get a Philips screw driver and wind the wire around the barrel several times ( 6 to 8 inches, then slide it off the screw driver and you end up with a small section of wire in your line that will totally solve your wiring tension problem. Best of the season from Canada.

Hi! I'm a new viewer and it is so great to gain experience via yours. I so agree with you that its not uncommon when fixing a boat, one finds the factory just did it wrong. You feel so much better when you have redone things properly yourself and you know the status but boy! is it a lot of work. I have redone wiring completely due to salt water corrosion many times and I almost feel like the best policy is to assume it's all bad and replace everything so you know what you've got.! :) Then when you are done, you start at the begining again. :) I wish I had all the knowledge that you have gained by owning this boat. Very Best to you. Have fun.

Fun ride for the first time in a year in the water! The starter is utterly simple! Take it all apart and clean EVERYTHING, look for green corrosion, and the commutator should be carefully cleaned to shiny copper. The black coating on the commutator can become insulating if it sits for a long time so that is likely why it doesn't run. Or the solenoid contacts could be corroded. Good luck on it! (You should not need a new motor. )

You maintain your house bit by bit and your ready for the winter, have used the kitty for a remodel in the master bedroom. Relaxing in front of the fire and drinking a much deserved glass of wine when you feel a drip of water, then another, you check the areas that use water no problem, bring in the contractor that did the remodel and to your horror found you need a new roof. So your starter needs to be replaced, it’s not the fifteen thousand needed for a new roof.

For future thought when you’re at a mooring ball you could always drop an anchor with extra chain so it won’t interfere with the mooring ball but if you should break loose you’ll have something else to help keep you from dragging. In this case I would’ve drop the anchor straight down beside the mooring ball line and then pulled out a little extra chain and connected it to your two line harness up front. Hopefully I’ve made myself clear but I think U get the jest anyways merry Christmas.
@markleygordon95294 жыл бұрын
Definitely don't want to do that. As the boat rotates the anchor chain will wrap around the mooring lines.
@duanemiller56064 жыл бұрын
@@markleygordon9529 i’ve had two friends have done similar things. One put his anchor down near the moorings anchor at the bottom and ran his chain up and had a Loop hung over the mooring ball that the chain ran through and back up to his deck. As the chain wrapped around more chain could go out. To release he would dive on the anchor and unwrap the twisted chain. The other one would hang his anchor off his bow but not all the way down. He would put a loop in the chain that dangled over The bow of his boat so if the mooring ball broke free his boat would not ground because the anchor could catch and then snap the zip tie that held the loop. He knew this would not prevent him from possibly hitting another boat but it generally kept him from grounding because as he approached shore the water was shallow and the anchor would catch and stop him. He relied on his fenders to protect both his boat and any other he might drift into, not this means he didn’t keep a watch but it was just an added precaution. They only did us of course if there was a very large storm coming. I have another friend who will always dive on his mooring, storm or no storm, and if he doesn’t think it looks solid he would unhook and move away to anchor rather than risk having the mooring ball break free.
@nuttytraveller21754 жыл бұрын
Don't do that...I speak from experience - most likely you'd have a twisted mess and no way to get out from. You want as little in the way to foul as possible in case your situation turns bad and shit happens. With high gusting wind, you could have idled the engine and when needed put into f.gear to ease the strain, but that takes focus to do it for too long of a time. You likely had your anchor at the ready and your electronics alarmed for moving location with keys/engine ready to start at a moment's notice. It is the prep and thought you do before shit happens that counts....which always includes an exit plan for the what if. And you had checked the moorage prior to hooking up, however, moorings are always a risk at each connection/stress point. If the holding was good, it may have been prudent early on to get off the mooring, reposition yourself as to where you'd be better set behind you, set your own anchor, put a float on it and a proper bridle with rubber snubs. In extreme situations you may even need to drop your anchor gear completely, buoy it and come back for it later....and have a plan for what you do next with your 2nd anchor which should be pretty equal to the job as your primary one.

May I recommend a small mooring tip to help you weather a cyclone. Cleat your mooring lines in the way you did but then continues the lines back to your main winches. This approach help spread the loads around the boat and can help to reduce the chance of damaging your boat, potentially catastrophically including the possible loss of your boat. This technique is also a good practice if ever your boat is under tow. The sharp tugging load that can occur in very high winds and while under tow can easily exceed the structural capability of the cleat-joint. If your cleat/bow joint fails the winches are very capable of taking the strain and are actually capable of withstanding higher load than most cleats found on a boat with some exceptions. Hope this helps.

I’m sorry to say I’m getting the same feeling. I don’t bend so well anymore, and I have my limits when I know I have to walk away or I will be replacing more stuff.

I don't see the stress of boat life any different then dry land but then again I'm a social worker in a BIG ED so maybe my metric is off?

@@rileybri If you have something break down in an RV, you have to deal with a messy, expensive hassle. If something breaks down on a boat, you could die.

It’s the mechanical aspect of boat life that intimidates me. I need to marry a mechanic/electrician!

Excellent posting kids! So happy to see Curiosity back in the water, finally. Too bad about the generator though. Not surprised considering how long the boat sat idle. Jason is truly a "Mr. Fixit" and seems to be able to tackle just about everything thrown his way. You Da Man! Nikki, of course is stunning!

They say the boat you buy should be 1/20th of your overall wealth. When you think about it, a boat is constant maintenance, it will not last forever or as long as a house, it is there to be sailed and to make use of. Substantial (and unexpected) expenses are part of that journey. If people didn't sail for the experience, they'd just fly everywhere (during non-COVID times) because it is so cheap to do so.

Glad to see you made it through all the trials and tribulations of this past year as you got back to Curiosity and launched her. Great work and congratulations to both of you. Hopefully you've seen the worst of any storms. One other thing you might consider besides engine running during storm watch is to double up on the mooring lines. Take care and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
