I can verify his statement. The first couple of weeks in-country, you're scared to death. Then the numbness sets in and you don't worry about anything. Then comes the last two weeks and you're scared to death again. You know you're close to going home, but you're afraid your luck was going to run out.

I had a similar experience. Iraq, on my way over I stressed to the point of not sleeping for the first 2 nights. Actually sat and smoked a few and came to the conclusion. I said what I needed to to my wife and family before I left. I had finances in order if anything happened. Sat for a long while, and out of nowhere a peaceful calm came from my neck down my chest and back. My thought at the time, If anything happens, they will be ok. I stopped stressing and moved on with a 14 month deployment. Very weird coming to terms with ones mortality. Liberating....

I had just watched Band of Brothers and remember what LT Speirs told a soldier about once you realize you're already dead, then you can do your job! It seriously helped until I had to take leave on month 14, only to have to go back to Iraq for two weeks. Those two weeks were intense because I didn't want to be that guy who died Two weeks out!

I was about to comment something similar then saw your post. The brevity within that singular word he spoke and then repeated.. thinking of what had to have been running through his mind before he uttered that singular word.. gave me chills. Rewatched multiple times to have it sink in more. The complexities and as you said, the multitude of raw emotions.. Courage personified

Yes, we need to hear their stories. It’s sad to think about but out of the millions of vietnam vets there are less then 500k alive today. i’m the grandson of a Army vietnam veteran who served with the 196th light infantry, and the 23rd americal div. He was a e5 sergeant during 69-71, he saw his friends and his seargent die on a hill while being surrounded by vietcong, he then was a 19 year old kid in charge of 50-100 men, which had only had at most 5months of proper training, and 0 training to be a platoon leader/ sergeant, just to make it brief he severely advised his sergeant not to push into a heavily forested hill knowing the vietcong would be on all sides, he only agreed to go if he followed his seargent, when they were all in the forest the vietcong opened fire instantly killing his seargent, where my grandpa most likely would of been had he not been smart. It’s crazy to think about, but thank you to your dad and all of our vietnam that lost their life and the ones who are still with us today.

I think this is remarkably important. To often media portrays warriors as impervious super humans. This is a real warrior. A Man who can admit to being so scared at first that he peed his pants and so resigned to his fate of death later that he stopped caring about the future. I hope this warrior has found and continues to find peace now that he’s home.

Even if you don't agree with the reasons the us went to Vietnam and the absolute mess they made doing it, every single person that went no matter what is a hero and is up there with the best of them. They fought for what they thought was right in the beginning no matter how their views changed they lived through hell and came back and a lot of them died in that hell whether they came back or not. Every single veteran deserves thanks for the service they gave regardless of your own personal views @@angle-g5520

I'm glad you came home. Thank you for your daily sacrifice for greedy politicians. We called it a conflict. It was a war and many, many men never came home. My husband was running recon missions in Vietnam, Cambodia and Louse. He was in the air and on the ground. After Vietnam, my husband changed and became ruthless. No longer sweet and kind. I don't know what he did while we lived in Japan. He would be gone for days and here I was a young bride 19. I grew up fast. I believe my husband did things that went again his faith. It became so bad, we divorced after 32 years. That's been 25 years ago.
@OGFrontLine
@OGFrontLine 5 ай бұрын
Despite the divorce do you stay in contact with him, provided hes still alive? I imagine that long of a marriage produced some children, if so what is their relationship with him like? It sounds like based on your description that he was part of a specialized unit, especially if he was tasked with reconnaissance missions in Cambodia and Laos; MACV-SOG comes to mind. If this was the case I could only imagine the horrors that man had to not only witness but participate in, day after day and deployment after deployment, that after his service he lost the ability to be patient, kind, or understanding of others due to the pain he suffered from for years. This is unfortunately the fate that many combat vets endure, and the toll it takes on their families is more than many can bare. I hope he's still alive and is doing well, and if not Im sorry for your loss.

I remember thinking when I survived my first firefight that”if it happens,it happens” about dying,and I felt like a prickly sense of calm come over me-and this same feeling came over me the next time we initiated contact with the enemy.After that,I became more used to the fact that I would be ok-or hopeful that I would-and I stopped thinking about dying and just focused on the job and my men.Im still here,and after three more deployments,that fear was pushed so far down it was unrecognizable.
