As a native houstonian I was raised to prepare for the worst even if u don't need the supplies, u start preparing in April. Have batteries & battery operated fans, lanterns, tv, water, non cooking food, get a barbecue pit, charcoal . U almost prepare like a camper would. Hurricane season is June - November, but with climate change it could go longer. Stay safe everyone.

I've been living in an older home in North Houston for 26 years. During this time, it has survived many storms and not flooded. We are blessed to have a great location and a well constructed older home. A gas grill and a mid-size generator got us through Beryl. However, during the storm our immediate concerns were large trees potentially falling as they did throughout the subdivision

Just been a little over 1 year in Houston. The May derecho storm drove me to buy a generator. Got the triFuel inverter generator that could run the house. We were out for 4 days. Thankfully, we didn't lose power this time. Besides, the detention lakes in Sunterra did a great job of preventing floods

I'm from Miami. Hurricane Andrew (Cat 5) hit us badly in 1992. This storm in Houston was very light work. Not even a category 1. My only problem is what happens if a Cat 5 hits Houston? Houston doesn't have an effective emergency plan. As far as Harvey, It was just long days of heavy rain which is why it flooded the city badly. Now, if that storm was a Cat 5, there's a strong possibility that most if not all those homes would've been destroyed. Thank God you and you're family are safe.
@aaronlathan5 ай бұрын
Yea anything above a Cat 1 and we’re gone. Houston has nothing in place for major events of any kind unfortunately 🥴. And with so many people here it just makes it worse

I disagree about newer places. My home is 2008 and it never flooded. Moved to Katy a year ago. Most of Katy didn’t lose power. Most of our lines are underground. We have a decent amount of trees, but not surrounding our homes, so little trees falling. Most people without electricity was out for about 3-4 days. I hear the woodlands/Conroe area stay getting hit with floods, falling trees and big storms. I’m glad I didn’t choose that area.

I’m thankful that you haven’t had issues in your area. There are a few communities that have had little to no impact from recent storms but I’d say you’re more of an exception than the rule though.

First u have a bbq of any meat u got in the freezer . Always have a couple of bags of ice in the freezer and a ice chest to keep fridge items cold . Never buy more than a weeks worth of food . I went to cooling centers during the day and then found places to chill out until the temps dropped enough to go home to sleep . You can ride the bus all day to stay cool . Always keep food that dont spoil and dont need to be cooked on hand . Always have an emergency stash of cash because if the power out banks and debit cards dont work . I had a small generator to charge my phone for several days but it was too small to really do anything else . Do not just sit at home and wait for help you got to go find the help you need the government is not going to do anything for you .
