Also, theres the whole matter of fact thing about the car. Like wtf? When I finally got a car I spent 500 bucks on it, so I could buy 2 cars a month and still have enough for gas and insurance. If that's too much for her to survive, there are these things called bicycles and legs. I have no idea how my dad made $90k for 3 people do as well as it did during the Great Recession down here in LA County. My sister and I hardly noticed a change even with him having to take a furlough. We live in a really nice area with a really nice house (nearly $800k as of the most recent estimate) and he still managed to pay off his car, the bills, our activities, our pets, my sister’s first car, and a lot of the things we still wanted. That sort of money management over here is WILD and I owe it to him for being as frugal as he was to allow my sister and I to live with very little change.

In order to stay on the same budget inspite prices increase, without renouncing to quality and the variety of foods we eat, I totaly reorganized and changed my way of doing things. I figured out that bigger chunks of meat are cheaper, so is the whole chicken (5$=3 meat dishes for 4 people and broth from skin, bones and 2 wings and with a handful of meat scrap from the broth, I can wrap up an appetizer aswell), also uneviserated fish is at least 30% cheaper, sometimes even more... I cook from scratch, don't waste money on stuff you can easily make at home at a fraction of a cost, like hummus or mayo and a bunch of other seasonings or deserts... When it's convenient, sometimes I buy in bulk, always keep an eye on items on sale, so for example last week I bought 6 months of Fairy dishwasher gel at a 40% discount and since my pantry is quite small, I don't tend to stock up much, just on items we use more frequently or that are more expensive (that way I save more money on a discount). So far it's been working rather well, the only thing is I had to invest in a good knife sharpener, but that has already payed of and overall, basic items for cooking from scratch used to be very cheap, so their price went up only in cents and I still find them very affordable, on the other hand processed food prices, the more they're processed, the more they go up.

In CA, the rental app requires 3x income to the rent meaning to get an approved rental application for a $4k/mo home means you need to make $12k/mo or $144k/yr. If the rental company is more lenient then they still require at least 2.5x income to your rent meaning still over the $90k supposed income. $10k/mo, $120k/yr. Pretty standard requirements, at least in CA.

Those are more cheaper than the grocery store she went to which I guarantee is owned by Kroger or Albertsons (middle class grocery stores) and I consider Whole Foods upper middle class. If she wanted cheapest grocery options she didn’t do her research, matter a fact she could of started with hitting the food bank first, worked her way to a 99cent store type store, and ended at where she went for extra goodies.
