The Russian roulette I heard is a different version: Instead of shooting at their rival the one who goes first shoot his own head instead and then hand the pistol to his rival for his suicidal turn _without re-spin_ and so does the rival will hand it back without spinning the cartage again if he survives. And there is a trick for this version of roulette: if you goes first and you survived the 5th shot, instead of handing the revolver to your rival for his suicidal turn, do him a favor by shoot him directly because chances are as soon as he loaded the 6th guaranteed shot he will cheat by immediately point the gun at you and fire.

Haha, yeah. A pity Headison still had an advantage. I'd do this that way: Headison spins and shoots. Tesla shoots. Repeat till dead end ;) It easy to see it's perfectly fair as the chance of bullet after spinning being in the first chamber is the same as in second (if we neglect the off-center mass of the bullet causing slightly uneven spin). Alternatively it can be: First baloon spins, shoots and passes the gun. In each next step a baloon shoots, spins, shoots again, passes the gun. Also 50 - 50, but both get chance at spinning.

I think only randomizing once in the beginning, and just firing consecutively afterward, would make it an even 50/50... at that point there's a maximum turn count (6), and parameters for victory (even or odd) which aren't affected by who goes first. Correct me if I'm wrong.

fun fact about Duels: they were very formally done, and they were made specifically so that odds are, assuming it even got to shooting, neither of them died by having the barrel of the gun be very small, causing the bullet to bounce around in it, and, most duels in the first place never even got to the shooting, people tend to assume that duels were informal, but in reality, there was a whole process, basically, if your pride was challenged, you would challenge the person to a duel, assuming they don't back down, you pick your second, who is there to basically there to just talk to the other second and try and resolve the issue, so the seconds are essentially peacemakers, then you have a doctor on site, turned around, etc etc, like I said, there's a lot of formalities, and few even got to the shooting

Ask a class of students to "fake" a series of 50 coinflips and it'll typically look "more random" than a real one, which will often have "patterns" like six heads or tails in a row - a random outcome which humans consider non-random. A person could, probably quite reliably, stop the timer in a designated region of they so wish. Human behavior can be used to generate randomness, but it has to be something we don't directly control. If you want a result which is unpredictable (by someone who has access to a normal person's resources), computer PRNG will probably do much better than any human choice. Many computers *do* use subconscious human input to seed their randomness. If you have fine enough control to affect that in a predictable way, you could definitely control a dice roll or timer.

You could make the NFL coin flip much closer to even with a simple change... the team that wins the coin flip would still have a 52% chance to win, but if you made it so the team that lost the coin flip only had to tie to win you'd get them up to 48%. It would also create an interesting choice... let the team that wins the coin toss decide to either receive, in which case they have to win to win, or to receive, in which case they would win or tie to win. That could create an interesting tactical decision. A team with a really strong defense might choose to kick with their only goal being to stop the other team from scoring.

@@andermium You can also define this sequence in another, maybe a little more complicated way: take the sequence cscccscscscccscccscccscscscccsc It is defined in the following way: You start with c, then write s and repeat the sequence before it, then write c and repeat the sequence, then write s and repeated it, then write c and repeated it, and so on. Now you start with E and every time there is c - change the letter, every time there is s - it stays the same.

@@ivanzlatev9298 I've wrote a short script in python to optimize the game - where each round the player less likely to have won so far takes a shot. Edison's turns are represented with 1's, Tesla's with 0's. Got the following sequence: 1001011001100110011001011001100110011001101001100101100110011001... Turned it to hexa for a more compressed representation: 9666659999a65999a5a6665a659999a659a665a65a5a. When stopped, the difference between their chances to win is ~1.55e-15 (in Tesla's favour surprisingly), and the chance for a tie is ~9.6e-15). Obvious patterns are hard to find, though it does start along with ETTE-TEET-TEET and then breaks out and even presents other viable 4-turn-blocks: 5=TETE, a=ETET

If Edison gets one shot and then every turn after that is 2 shots I get probabilities of 50.8% and 49.2%. This is the basis of a “snake” draft or you could call it switching who goes first each round. I wonder why this wasn’t used considering its a more obvious approach and produces closer probabilities.

If you only spin the cylinder at the start of each players turn, the probabilities are 52.2% and 47.8%. Slightly more fair than Vsauce's approach and slightly less fair than your approach. However, it puts a definite limit on the duration game and makes any 6th round a hell of a lot more fun to watch XD.

If the game went back to one shot each, after Tesla got 2 shots, what would the odds have panned out to be? Some reason, I think that it would still have been in Edison's favor, however, by a smaller margin than the scenario you ran. I'm no mathematician, I'm not crunching the numbers. Just from a quick thought experiment, that's what I figured made the most sense when you started to explain the rules you were going to play by.

I think there is an easy more even way: let’s say Edison starts, than Tesla takes two shots, and than they keep shooting one shot at a time. (It would be ETTETET... where the letter stands for who shoots). And, if my maths isn’t wrong, it should give a probability of 51,8% of Tesla winning, and 48,2% of Edison winning, thus it’s also more probable for the second person to win
@Lucepad4 жыл бұрын
Actually, if Edison starts with one shot, than they continue shooting twice at a time (a sequence like ETTEETTEETTEETT...), we have a probability of 50,82% of Edison winning and 49,18% of Tesla winning

Or just have two guns and make them shoot at the same time for 50 50 odds
@therealshavenyak4 жыл бұрын
@@0bread286 That works, but also will lead to a 1/6 chance that both guns fire at the same time and no one wins. But, you could make it fair and prevent the possibility of a tie by having someone else hold the gun. Each turn, he will spin the cylinder, point at one player and pull the trigger, then without spinning again, point at the other player and pull the trigger.
